Eachine EV300D Latency Fixed? - 'How to' and my thoughts

  • It is becoming clear that there have been several versions of the update firmware that potentially explains the different results testers are getting. Without version numbers on the .bin file its impossible to tell which one you have so download the latest would be my advice.
UPDATE (28FEB): Following this video Eachine have added the link to the latest firmware to their site and have committed to continue to improve and optimise the code - see posts below. I'd use the links on then Eachine pages now to get the latest and greatest and keep an eye on the updates as they'll change. I updated on the evening of the 26th Feb using the latest firmware out at that time as shown in the video but not all testers are seeing identical results. Time will tell if this is fixed for everybody but it's good to see Eachine acknowledge the issue and work on a fix...

You don't seem to give any value in your customers.
I just checked your website and you have a random link to a PDF file which is called "firmware" update.
      It's a file called 'E04940A1-0345-E812-B5F0-E59518B9556B.pdf'
Inside the PDF is a small link to a google drive container to a random file called 'MERGE.BIN'
wtf is a "MERGE" file ?
I'm in software business for 20 years now and even as an untrained novice child I did a better job in that.
      Where is the CHANGELOG
      Where is the VERSION NUMBER
Where is a DOWNLOAD LIST OF ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS
This sort of customer hating behaviour might work in China but it will backfire horribly with western customers.
We are used to professional conduct, we expect a company to pay attention to details.
Also as far as I heard the latency issue is still there as on day one, just with PAL camera streams it's in average better with random 100ms spikes.
      That's not a fix, it's a quick hack.
That's why the firmware is called "MERGE", some random developer just copied it "hey test it, it's a bit better than before"

Painless360 - Thanks again for this followup video. This is obviously a hot topic lately. I updated my black set of EV300d (NTSC) per your instructions. I do seem to have a noticeable improvement in the latency compared to the original factory firmware. The image does appear to flicker bit more then it use to, but does not appear to be consistent. Also possible a ever so slight degradation of the overall image quality, but It does to be as noticeable while flying the whoop around the house. Kudos to Eachine to continue to followup fine tune the firmware!

Dear Lee, I love your videos. They are so educational.
Recently I bought a pair of EV300D googles. Previously I had Cyclops v2 and I love them. Only issue with them is the form factor being a bit too bulky so I thought EV300D will solve this issue and they did.
Now once I got the Eachine googles I tested them and to my surprise I have the following issues:
    - The IPD adjustment does not seem to be spot on. In result I see a bit of a shadow in between. My IPD is 61mm (confirmed by a doctor).
    - Wearing the googles for 10 minutes gives me headache and my vision becomes blurred after removing them (never had issues like this with Cyclops).
Note: My sight is normal, never wore glasses in my life.
Have you noticed anything like this while reviewing Eachine EV300D?
    Thank you,
    George

The reason why the SD card won't work for updating is probably because it's only used for the DVR. It's a separate component and a link between the processor and the SD card slot isn't normally required.

Gal Kremer did the update and found that the latency was fixed, but a strange wobble was introduced. The next update fixed the wobble, but the latency went back up...it also looked like the latency was really only fixed in either pal or ntsc (can't remember which). Quite a strange set of updates :D

There was some talk from others that after a code change, latency was only improved for PAL video transmissions, not NTSC. Since there seem to be several code sets, do you know if that is the case here, or is it now solved for both?

@@Painless360 I own the EV300D since early Jannuary, and went through 3 firmware versions. I started the hobby a few weeks before getting the EV300D with the EV200D, and now own both. Because of beeing new to it I almost flimed every singe flight I did so far, and the count is now over 600 in total. I own 14 whoops so far (a few meteors with a little soldering jobs done (other vtx), a few other betafpv, Mobula6, Trashcan, Tinyhawk regular and S, ...).
In regard to the EV300D I can say that the quality is not consistent at all. I sometimes record the same flight with different DVRs (EV200D, EV300D, Eachine 5", Spektrum 4,3", EV800D) I own, and in terms of DVR quality the EV300D seems to be inferior then most others. I suspect that the low bitrate is part of the problem. On the Eachine5" or Spektrum or even the EV800D the bitrate is much higher, and quality is often significantly better!
At last, I also suspect Eachine to tweak the hardware from batch to batch, so it would be even harder to get usable comparisons, because we never know what revision someone actually is...
It would be strictly necessary for Eachine to implement a revision system in both hard- an software. I understand if they do not want to publish hardware revisions (this could probably upset some early birds as me), but at least the firmware revisions have to be trackable, and a proper changelog is also absolutely required!
Thank you for your brilliant work & best regards from Vienna,
      Markus

It's insane how bad they manage their versions. They simply don't have a version, they just throw firmware binaries out like trash.
As far as I could read the firmware fix only fixes PAL cameras and is still randomly inconsistent in latency.
