Considered Review: Skyzone O2O budget OLED FPV goggles

  • If you want to fly a drone, quadcopter or RC plane using FPV then you will need a set of FPV goggles and the O20 goggles are a lower-priced set of OLED goggles from Skyzone.
This review represents my findings and opinions after weeks of using the O30 goggles, rather than just a quick unboxing and list of specifications.
    Pros:
    - lower priced than most other OLED FPV goggles
    - excellent receivers and RapidMix operation
    - very nice video image quality (they're OLED!)
    - comfortable and well sealed against light leaks
    - narrower field of view (if you prefer wide FOVs)
    Cons:
    - still more expensive than many LCD goggle offerings
    - the screen-saver caught me out (but just once)
    - DVR uses motion-JPEG (MJPEG) rather than H264
    - narrow field of view (if you prefer larger FOVs)
    Conclusion:
If you're on a budget but must have OLED technology in your FPV goggles or if you don't like the wide FOV of the 04X goggles then these are a something well worth taking a look at.

I think it was great that you just put up text to correct any minor issues rather than spend hours going over and over aiming for perfection. Everyone understood exactly what you were talking about and I’m sure your time was better spent on something else. Take care and keep up the great work you do.

Wow, I tried the reading glasses hot glued into the inside of my device and it worked great. I am kicking myself in the ass for not thinking about doing that in the first place, THANKS!

Great video as always Bruce. I like the long term reviews. I never rush to buy new stuff because I always worry that the first batch contain all the bugs, errors and manufacturing learning, so I'm not going to buy the wrong thing while waiting for your reviews.
Too right about the weather. When Google said earlier this week Christchurch 7 degrees tomorrow, 16 degrees cooler than today, I knew winter is on the way.

Long term reviews are definitely the most worth watching. The lived experience after the honeymoon is over brings to light all the flaws so you can learn if you're ok to live with them (and perhaps a few virtues) . Unboxings are okay if they're short, and I can read my own spec sheet. So big thumbs up for your approach.
One thing - some clubs may not allow sharing of googles during Covid. I'm in Australia, so very low Covid rates (not as good as New Zealand of course) but still my astronomy club has a no sharing of equipment rule at the moment.

I realize it's been a year since you produced this video, and these googles came out but, looking at getting into FPV (long time desire) and not wanting to spend LOTS of money on googles but don't want to throw away money on box googles that may be junk. These seem to foot the bill very nicely and I so appreciate your review of them Bruce! Being a long time subscriber you have never failed to deliver on great videos no matter what they are, reviews, info, how to, you cover it all!!! Thanks again so much for sharing with us!!!!

I've been starting to consider buying a pair of goggles like those... But I would probably go for the 04X!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Hey Bruce, thanks for the great in-depth review. Recently, I actually came up with PCB biquad patch’s PCB layers using the free image-to-Gerber converter and uploaded the files to jlcpcb to make 5 of them. I used 4 on the digital fpv Goggles, and I had the air unit’s LHCPs swapped out with little Lumenier pcb dipoles and wow, the linear setup worked so well! I also used my fifth biquad on skyzone goggles to match the linear polarization of the tiny AIO Vtx cam which I put it on a toy quad. What surprised me is that I dun get as much breakups from the analog 5.8g on linear polarization now, as compared to back in 2012 when we used those chunky boscam 5.8g 200mw VTXs. Could it be VTX chips have improved so much over the years, such that the improvement in video via circular polarization isn’t as “dramatic” now as before?

I have watched your video multiple times because I was torn whether to go with the O2O or with the cobra X. Because of your honest review I bought the 02O and I am not regretting even a little bit for it. Coming from an ev800D, it's a very big upgrade and the FOV isn't bad. I honestly thought I was still using the ev800D!

@@flyingtarot8609 it's actually okay for me. But yes you will really see a big difference in fov. Box goggles really do have a wide FOV but I was never really a fan of it simply because I was getting blurred images from it and i get dizzy when moving my eyes too much especially with a wide FOV. I prefer the added sharpness with the smaller FOV and my eyes doesnt really have to move that much. From what I think, once I started flying, all I was focused about was the flying and not the specs of the goggles like the FPV. I've tried sa hdo2s and the feel is just the same depsite the difference in fov. No regrets with the 02O

Hi Bruce Great video and review of the Skyzone O20. OK so where does it put me at ? I just purchased the Skyzone O30 last year, and I love flying with them. I first started with Eachine EV-100 and then EV-800D, I won a pair of AOMWAY Comander V1. I used them for years. But I seen a pair of O30 on black Friday and I picked them up for the same price as the O20. So I guess I got a good deal. But I don't like how I can never change the receiver. Thanks again for the information and video.

Do all of the Skyzones have the 3d function? I purchased a box of mixed parts from a garage sale and it had the Skyzone 3d transmitter with the stock antennas and a white dual camera. Looks never used 🥳 Never hear much about 3d FPV so figured it must be a gimmick...

    • @kolibrif8242
      @kolibrif8242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No, the O2O do not support 3D anymore. It is a pitty as it is a lot of fun and works very well (and you do not need a special 3D camera as it works with 2 cameras + 2 vtxs). I am flying it on a brushless whoop with two Caddx Ant Lite cameras (16:9). The O2X version from Skyzone is supporting 3D, but they are discontinued. Please note that we are here talking about 3D via two video channels. There is also 3D side-by-side via one video channel, which is a different way to transfer 3D (stereoscopic) images.

Narrow FOV goggles are absolutely wack to me. Scale the image! make the hardware as capable as possible, then implement software to change it. Sure, you won't have the resolution that you'd get with a more pixel dense display, but as Bruce says, the lower res on a smaller FOV isn't as big an issue as you expect. it might take a bit to develop the hardware and software to scale the image, but it's worth it to have a product that appeals to the widest audience.

The whole Goggle direction was a total mistake for the hobby imho.
Why would you want to fly with anything less than a 23" monitor, and some kind of Alien facehugger strapped to your face. I finally came to the conclusion I hate all goggles, they are all awful, and if I can, I never want to fly using them ever again. They could uf built huge slim tablet fpv monitors instead. No more cumbersome to carry around than a lightweight oversized tablet, and you could use it to run OpenTX companion, Betaflight, Firefox, and watch TH-cam videos on it.
Goggles were an abortion. D3@TH to goggles.
