You always do a great job showing enthusiasm and passion for Tamiya's and certainly run them and show they are not the fragile things some folk believe! Yes in moderation with Tamiya's no silly power or skate park craziness! Plus by the way my vote goes to the original looking HS2 its a very classic look!
Yeah but that’s the great thing about being an adult RC enthusiast, you can afford real RC’s that can handle proper bashing and fun! Tamiya looks like cheap plastic you’d get for a Christmas present as a 10 year old child.
@@ryanjofre lol you got one part right mate! Yes l was indeed 10 when l got my first tamiya in 1983! But you have missed the point though like many do when it comes to Tamiya and Kyosho especially if only been into the hobby for the last 10 or so years! Tamiya are about nostalgia and building kits and running cars you had or so wanted in the past as kids! See you had to of been around in the 80s/90s golden era to appreciate that and what tamiya stand for and are all about! I have my Stampede for bashing but l get much greater enjoyment running my Hotshot or Sand Scorcher on the beach then bashing something like a Traxxas or Arrma l have no general connection too! Yeah its fun but the feeling is way off!
@@MadBeeRC I’m 44 mate! Kyosho is top of the line…100% Top shelf. Their carbon composite parts are outstanding! I have a ZX-5 I’ve had since 2013 but only ran for a couple months. I just bought more carbon parts, hop ups and a new Mamba Max and Bluetooth B Link. I’m gonna get it up and running this month finally and try 3s lipo for the time on the 5700kv motor. I understand what your saying implicitly but Tamiya just didn’t float my boat mate!
@ryanjofre Yeah l see we are a different breed! I am old school totally in this hobby! Tamiya does do great carbon gear with all their TRF stuff and Kyosho do some great modern stuff too but it doesn't interest me a lot! Not that l am not interested but its the vintage Tamiya and rere vintage designed cars that is my passion! The Kyosho Legendary series fits in this too! I was just making the point that these old designs can still in rere form give it some beans considering they are a 30+ years old in design! Amazing considering! Yeah l get your point if someone never had anything to do with tamiya in the past they wouldn't have built up that relationship and love affair like us old tamiya fan boys have and if you compare lets say the new TD4 to any other modern buggy it would get a kicking but tamiya's have a special appeal to old boys like me lol. I appreciate the bashers and modern cars they are so tough but they don't float my boat like you said! Haha the diversity in this hobby is massive!
Yeah it's an awesome buggy. I got myself one also. I didn't like the blockhead livery so much on either the Wild One or Hot Shot 2. Thankyou Tamiya for listening to us loyal Tamiya enthusiasts 👍💪
Had the original Hot Shot, loved it! The problem with it is the lower control arms were connected by a thin plastic piece that would break when the front wheels connected to anything. When it ran, it was a kick ass performer!
Nice video! You shown exactly why I LOVE the vintage style buggies the knobby tires the higher ground clearance sealed up from the elements .. you ran it in the perfect dirt it flung it all over and the tired ripped up the terrain!! great job!!
I bought a Hornet in the mid 80s. I tuned it with an RS540 sprint motor, full ball race in the wheels, and gearbox and a 7.2v race battery pack. I loved and thrashed that car about for several years with my mates who all had Hornet's, Frog's, and Grasshopper's. Then, the original Hotshot was released in the UK and me and my mates used to go to the local model shop every weekend to look at and hold the Hotshot that was on display. We all loved it, but none of us ever got one because they were very expensive back then and we all had invested heavily in our rigs. It was the car I always wanted but never had. At 57, I'm still into RC cars but more crawlers nowadays, but I still own a cheap 1/10 DEERC brushless buggy, which I've modded for bashing about.
Great reviews and great content not to mention you don't purposely try and break absolutely everything you drive. I was looking for a quality rc channel and thought Tomley rc was the best but I was wrong. Your channel is my preference and I'm subscribing.
Hands down this one for me. 1st and only Tamiya Buggy I owned back in the 80's (I kinda caught up since 2009 😂). I'm so waiting for it to come. This will really bring me back 35+ years ago 😮 Huge thanks for this review 👍🤝
The blockhead motors... blue and yellow have a clean look for sure! I am still debating on getting the old hornet... that was my childhood car. The big old futaba square box for a transmitter 😂😅 those were the days!! Great stuff as always!!
Go with Hornet. They are Ace. Remember, they are crazy handling rear wheel drive squirmy buggies that take a while to master. They aren't race cars. Ace looking too. For the price of a Hotshot you could probably get a Hornet for fun and a Grasshopper to sit on a shelf and look nice.
One of the best looking buggies of all time ! but always sounded like a food-mixer at full tilt, and the front suspension geometry is terrible, as the wheels toe-in as the front dips. But still a must have in any vintage RC collection. Fit the optional under guard to save the chassis.
I have the metallic special edition kit. What a fun build back in the day, I used bearings throughout. Goes good stock running a 2s lipo and low voltage alarm. These can take a beating lol
This is a cool RC When I think of Tamiya as a kid I think of the King Cab. That was my dream truck the one featured in the magazine with cool 80’s graphics! I saw a youtuber actually bought the one in featured and he ran it!

Took more of a beating than I thought it could handle. If I had to pick, I'd probably go with the blue, just has an older throw back look in my opinion. Thanks as always Greg!
I have a 3500kv 3650 setup in my Bigwig. On 2s with the taller gearing it comes with it'll do 35mph on 2s. Fast enough and plenty of torque for the bigwig. The motor only gets warm. The bigwig habdles the extra power like a champ!
Greetings from Scotland. I prefer the Blockhead. Although the 24 edition has a but if a Hornet vibe going on. Back in the olden days of the 80s when Ibsas wee, the Hotshot was never my favourite of all the Taniyas I used to lust over. I always thought it looked a bit plasticy compared to the others. It's really grown on me over the years. Thanks for the vid. Always ace to see and hear old school Tamiyas running.
Absolutely, for some reason it’s my Go To movie when building Tamiya cars. The last 4 Tamiya cars you see on the channel I played it at least once during the build. 🤣
Awesome video! If you say this is your favorite 4wd out of everything you’ve had and driven I think I need to get and try one out 👍 I’ve never had a tamiya but I’ve been after the vintage driving feel.
My favourite is the Super Shot (Super Hotshot) Hotshot and Hotshot 2. I have all the reres but had the original Hotshot 2 back in the day, fully ballraced with Technigold motor which was in perfect condition…..sadly let it go at a garage sale ten, maybe 15 years back for £20 with radio and everything 😢😢😢😢
Wrong Dampers!!!!... :P Luckily I am a hoarder, and got a full set of the 'classic' dampers in red. I must have had them for at least 15 or 20 years. Can't remember how I got them. Probably bought in a bulk-sale, or something. I'll be getting this kit anyways. By the by, a rough sandpit is basically what those old buggies were made for. Circuits were róugh, in "Ye Olde Days" . A friend had the original with a Dynatech 02H in it with a 13t pinion. It fléw. Cooked/burnt the MSC but good too. .. On a side note : The front-slap can only be 'fixed' by using the 1-hole pistons with 70 thickness losi oil and a hard spring. The spring in the kit is way too soft and gets too bouncy when using the spacers. Orr, source the original dampers and use its 1 hole piston. The ' old' shocks work fine with 500cps oil. The tolerance of the pistons is much more precise.
I think the HS2 is much more attractive than the Blockhead edition. You should run it with ballbearings and steel pinions, the included alloy pinions are extremly soft and wear down fast.
Yup, I broke the front shock mount on mine the first time I drove it. They sure looked cool to a 13 year old kid back then, but they were pretty trash.
its the blockhead for me out of these 2 .. BUT painted red like the original Hotshot, and id go easy on the blockhead stickers (theyre a bit much for me, id keep a couple of the smaller ones) also wouldnt put the number plates on.. its the raised cage on the blockhead that makes it look a whole lot better.. but i actually ended up with a super hotshot as i got a super good deal pricewise and it has ALL the upgrades already fitted.. and yes again i will be altering the stickers and painting it OG hotshot red.. HOTSHOTS (all derivatives) should be Red! LOL
So I went to the same high school as Savage Steve Holland (Greenwich High School, or Generic in the movie 🤣) in CT and the opening graduation scene in One Crazy Summer always gets me. He used our actual color robes and made fun of the tradition of kids getting cars as presents for graduating (rich town) and I always die laughing when Hoops gets his street sweeper. I did not get anything for graduating other than a diploma. I did buy myself a Tamiya NIssan King Cab with money I made working at a pizza place in Old Greenwich as my own present to myself for graduating and broke it on the first run at the BMX track you film at. Took almost the whole summer to get the new diff as parts were scarce. EDIT: What kind of blasphemy is this running a 'Shot chassis with no whip antenna?!?!
I am lucky to have an original HS2 that needs to be restored, a new HS2 for a runner would be a really nice thing to have. For me it has to be the original HS2 design as i love the way spoiler rolls of the rood line.
I got myself in seriously bad trouble with my parents for my Tamiya RC collection. I don't live at my parents house but was storing my cars at their house. Im bloody 51 years of age. And my parents cant stand my hobby. It started s fight and i ended up punching out my dad who is 78. He fell and got a scrape and cut on his head. There were quite a few smashes and crashes during my runs. I thought I’d crack the chassis for sure. But it held up!
My first "hobby grade" RC was the Tamiya Super Sabor, which is the same platform. Just a different body, I believe.
