I didn't even realize you used the "Adobe fixer"...but I feel your pain, especially when I slightly record my audio too loud and it peaks enough to annoy me.
This is why I use the (very affordable) zoom f2 recorders. 32 bit float. No levels. But… on the boom mic there’s a gain switch and I knocked it to its lowest position and the levels were almost inaudible. Was so mad haha. The adobe enhancer got it to a listenable level but still robotic sounding in my opinion. But I am thankful that tool exists!

🫡 I like the hard light. It’s also nice to use hard light in white rooms as it bounces all over the place, unless controlled of course, and results in some soft light as well.
@@BlaineWestropp1 I got this book by cinematographer Darius Khondji - he talks about how he likes wide angle lenses and prefers to accentuate them by hard lighting the backgrounds and soft lighting faces - for that extra separation - really blew my mind!
Thanks so much! Sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s too sourcey or not when looking at the monitor.. but when I just look closely at it, and knowing where the light is actually placed, I can feel it. Much better look for this one at least with the more natural lighting!
I've used the light bridge reflectors on a few shoots and really like them. I ended up making some of my own mirrors as I really wanted different shapes and have begun spraying on different clear coats and even made some intentionally splotchy to have textured options. Buying the baby pin/ball mounts for them costs more than the mirrors themselves.
love it. shooting through odd glass and bottles is also very nice. an early video on this channel shows some footage shooting light through a lemonade picture and having moving light over a shoe lol. beautiful look. great way to get some unique images.
The advantage of using the CRLS vs mirror boards is that you don’t introduce CT shift. When you say that the light looks more natural when the source is farther away is called inverse square law of light.
love CRLS for many reasons, no CT shift being one of them. also, inverse square is simply describing light intensity changing in an inverse proportion to the square of the distance. double the distance, quarter the intensity. of course moving light further away creates a more natural look, sometimes, depending what is "natural." Compared to how things look when lit by the sun for example, big source far away, so that their relative sizes match. a shot of someone looking at a phone screen or a computer screen and being illuminated by it would look "natural" with a light mounted to the screen, or just using the screen itself as the source. it would not look natural to light them with a leko from 20 feet away. I know you know all this but I purposely did not mention inverse square law in this video!
That’s right. Furthermore when selecting the light unit to shine into the mirror (or CRLS) you will find a great advantage using light sources that creates an even field of light. Elipsoidals such as the ETC source four works great. Jo Leko works well for daylight. I also had fantastic results using the PB70 from Dedolight.
Yep. Joleko is one of my favorites, just on its own not even through a mirror I love it. Have also heard good things about the dedolight. Don’t they have a reflector package as well?
3:27 is the shot sample that feels best to me, though it still feels a stop too hard on her face compared to the rest of the scene...but that's only my preference in playing it "safe/r"... the tights on the face feel overly sourcy, to me...and one of the wides feels like theres an overhead blasting her too much (it's obviously the skylight) - but I appreciate you're pushing for the needle too. I think there's just less cohesion for me between the light on the subject vs the light (ambience) across the backdrop feel a touch overly contrived / lit (for me) - not correct or incorrect, just not quite for me (keeping in mind I'm the absolute pleb I am in comparison to the level you're at!!!!!!). tights on the drink pours etc etc etc feel 👌🔥😛 All my plebbery aside, I Fn love your work and your channel, and this is all a great example for mirror use, and your usual way of sharing in a vid!!!! And that lightbridge sample in that kitchen setup 😎 SO economical / so boss Cheers legend.

I leaned into the fact that light from outside would be changing. I wanted different looks within the scene.. (this is one of the only times I have gone for that). sometimes there was a lot of light coming from above, and sometimes not so much. I think in the end though much of this was what I was going for.. @@BlaineWestropp1 yep, understanding the quality of your eye for detail it felt like it was a specific choice to play with your lighting ratios / hardness etc shot to shot over keeping it at a consistent rate across the sequence. montage of cuts, montage of lighting treatment / variations so to speak - I get it... and funnily enough like it even more a week on haha... In retrospect, I'm so used to people trying to even out looks shot to shot to perfection (myself included so I can feel validated as "professional"), I forgot there's the option to play with that "ideology" as you've done here right. when you've got the perfect looks down, you tend to want to play and push as you've done ;-) ----- "I wanted different looks within the scene.. (this is one of the only times I have gone for that)" I look at it all again and like it even more now haha Love your work legend

It felt liked you wanted the mirror practice which is a great frame as well. Apologies if this question is basic, since the light travels further does that mean that the falloff is more pronounced in shape but the intensity is less? I understand that the further a light is away from the subject the more defined the shadow will be, so is this a way to control output and have clean shadows?
dont apologize! if you take a light, and move it further, the intensity will be less, the falloff will be slower, and the shadows will be harder. put an object on a countertop or a table in the dark. take your phone flashlight, or a flashlight and point it at the object and then move it really close, and further away. you will see what happens! let me know if you need further clarification :)

This is one of the reasons why I like using my Lightbridge 50 (diffusion 4). Would the world ever accept these mirrors over more common bounce fabrics? The Godox version is so much cheaper than LB and has made it more accessible for crews and DPs.
love lightbridge. so useful. have not used godox, but I like the case it comes in. 4x4 mirrors/shiny boards have been used forever and just live on the grip trucks, so I would say the world has accepted the mirror game :)
Awesome video as always! So essentially if you shoot a light at a mirror 10 feet away, then that light bounces back 10 feet and hits your subject, the light has an effective travel of 20 feet. Is that correct?

Hey thank you! I did not add any diffusion. If I wanted diffusion, in this scenario I would not have utilized the mirrors. Even an 8x8 in an interior is pretty easy to fill with light in a smaller space either through the diffusion or bounced off of it so no need for mirrors in this particular scenario. You could utilize diffusion and mirrors when you want diffused light but cannot fit your source in your location and want it coming from outside. Lamps on sidewalk, pointed up towards mirrors, directed through window, then diffused. You can also used “diffused” mirrors like what light bridge and lite flow offer. Both companies have good videos on their TH-cam channels showing the differences in their diffused mirrors! I definitely want a set of one of them.

Hey thanks a lot! For this one I used a sennheiser MKE 400 boomed overhead, and a zoom f2 recorder. But… I accidentally set the mke 400 to its lowest sensitivity and had to run the audio through adobe audio enhance. So the quality is typically much much better than what you hear in this video!
Hey thanks! Combo of many things, camera, lens. The overcast day looks good in this location (no additional lighting outside of what is coming through the window) and the color checker for perfect exposure and color, and lastly the grade. A special look years in the making!
The reflections look PRETTY UNNATTURAL to be honest. It looks very source-y. Natural light doesnt do that unlrss you have all the lamps in your house pointed at you
I think the difference is similar to “movie night” and night time. Movie night looks nothing like night time. Cameras see differently than our eyes. I think movie “sunny” also looks different than real life sunny. My goal is not to shoot a commercial in a real life location and just be at the whim of the sun. That’s what TikTok looks like. I want to be bolder and create a look that feels like something. Oftentimes when capturing light I find that when you make stronger bolder decisions, the final image is stronger, even when that light source is felt right outside the frame.
@@BlaineWestropp1I understand trying to have a style, mate. But let's take a look at the scene with the cabinets. They are huge dark splotches surrounding your subject. That isn't how sunlight works. If you see your kitchen interior around 2-5pm you will see even tho the sun is a source it is still evenly lit. Then let's take a look at the product shots. If you see how the sun is entering at the angle you are trying to recreate, it will be like late afternoon sun (Which is a cooler temperature btw) plus the shadows will have more of a penumbra (fuzziness as you call it) since the sun is going through more atmosphere scattering the light resulting in a softer shadow. I can go on with each shot but I think you get the gist. If you are going for a stylized look then say that, DON'T say that you are going for a sun look if you're not going to bother. Edit: Grammar

I think movie “sunny” also looks different than real life sunny. My goal is not to shoot a commercial in a real life location and just be at the whim of the sun. That’s what TikTok looks like. I want to be bolder and create a look that feels like something. Oftentimes when capturing light I find that when you make stronger bolder decisions, the final image is stronger, even when that light source is felt right outside the frame.

@@BlaineWestropp1I understand trying to have a style, mate. But let's take a look at the scene with the cabinets. They are huge dark splotches surrounding your subject. That isn't how sunlight works.
If you see your kitchen interior around 2-5pm you will see even tho the sun is a source it is still evenly lit. Then let's take a look at the product shots. If you see how the sun is entering at the angle you are trying to recreate, it will be like late afternoon sun (Which is a cooler temperature btw) plus the shadows will have more of a penumbra (fuzziness as you call it) since the sun is going through more atmosphere scattering the light resulting in a softer shadow.
I can go on with each shot but I think you get the gist. If you are going for a stylized look then say that, DON'T say that you are going for a sun look if you're not going to bother.
