_"I was never a Son of Horus. I was and remain a Luna Wolf. A proud son of Cthonia, a loyal servant of the Emperor, beloved by all. I am your enemy."_ - Garviel Loken
Even now I can picture Loken during the siege of Terra His battle plate white as the moon the black wolf head with its yellow eyes beaming for all to see sowing terror in its sight. hHs waste adorned with past battle honors along with grenades and ammo packs and on his chest plate gleaming in the blasts of battle a golden two headed Aquila a gift from the Sigilight at the request of the emperor.
It had to take one incredible character to start off the Horus Heresy. From an interview with Graham it seemed like they never planned it to be more then like 8 to 10 books. They maybe thought Loken was going to be the focus the entire way though. Loken like many of the Imperiums greatest was nothing ever special, No real great talent in anything unique(not saying a Captain rank is minor), but he was duty bound above any sense of personal glory. Yet what he did and his voice would reverberate though the millennia.
TBH he was one of the 4 of the most inner circle of the whole legion, and a company captain - he was far and above one of the greatest legionnaires within one of the greatest legions. He was far from ordinary. Saul Tarvitz could be called ordinary, but Loken was exceptional from the very outset. And yet he wasn't infallible. For example he was responsible for the trampling of dozens of humans when they brought the wounded Horus back on the ship and he didn't really feel any regret (it was quite justified in his eyes). That makes him a balanced and very real/human-like/believable character and that's why we like him so much.
And yet, if it wasn't for Saul Tarvitz, the loyalists, may not be so loyal anymore! Of course, in the grand scheme of things, he really was ordinary, but still, ordinary people in warhammer 40k can make a huge difference. Wasn't it a normal everyday soldier, that gave the emperor the mindset to kill horus?
