    You don't mention it here but many pistons (not sure about Ross) have the pin offset to one side and want that oriented a certain way in the block. Usually there is an arrow or dot indicating which way faces the front of the block. Since you have custom machined valve reliefs that means that 4 pistons must be used on one side and 4 on the other, in order to keep things straight. Hopefully the lettering on the pistons takes that into account.

      Great point! Yeah, the Ross pistons have centered pins, the offset is on the crank journal portion of the rod. And, of course, yes ... pay attention to the valve reliefs, they all need to be pointed to the center of the block. Thanks!

    Great video as always Mike. One thing to mention for people who’ve never done this is the importance of keeping the crank still while doing the plastigauge as it can skew the results very slightly if there’s any movement. I can’t wait to get mine back together too!

      Thanks Josh! Yeah, I should've shed some more light on the whole "don't let the crank, or rod, turn on the journal with the plastigauge in there". Which would have happened, if I tried to torque down those caps when the Crank was on my work bench. Thanks, as usual!

    I know this is an old thread but getting ready to build a 461 butler kit myself and I am new to this. I have to ask. I understand that the chamfer side of the rods face the crank but is there anything else that dictates the orientation of the rods?

    • @FastMonty
      @FastMonty  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Congrats Jerry! yup, the Chamfer is the dead giveaway. Keep asking questions, and what the videos as many times as needed. Be patience, take your time, but go fast. ha, ha... see ya!

    Hey. What if the wrist pin does not fit the rod bore. And the piston has sirclips

    • @FastMonty
      @FastMonty  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Welp, you either have the wrong rod, OR your set up requires the pin to be pressed into the rod . I'd work with your local engine builder to figure that out. Good luck!

    Yah there all fun for us viewers, but then all we do is sit back and watch. And drewal while you put together the eye candy that becomes mechanical mayhem. By the way , I have to agree those Pistons and rods are Bad Ass Jewelry.! Anyway brother best of luck putting together what I think will definitely be a BEAST . Can't wait for the following videos.👍✌

    Thanks. Very informative. If I ever get around to rebuilding a Pontiac between your videos, and Rocky's and Jim's books I'm sure I'll not screw it up too too bad. :)

    Hey man why did the motor have oil starvation?

    • @FastMonty

      Basically a poorly plumbed PCV System... here's the solution, and more info as to why a proper PCV is essential. th-cam.com/video/fdYFieOOGq4/w-d-xo.html Have fun!

      Ha, ha... yeah, I'll quote him from time to time... and, clearly, I love that movie too. Not sure about the horses... I'm thinking 550+. BUT, the torque is gonna be around 600. Thanks for the comment!
