Your argument goes both ways. There are alot of people who enjoy being offroad more than on road. The enduro is a light adventure bike that is more capable offroad than you think it's all about your offroad skill.
For serious off-roading, a 350 lb enduro doesn't make sense to me. You'd be better served on the 500 EXC which is much lighter. The 21" tubed front wheel is the biggest weakness for dual sports. Reason I switched to a supermoto.
@@CycleCruza I didn't mean that it was a serious offroader. I have a 500 and I love it offroad but sometimes it leaves a little more to be desired for the highway. My 500 is not good for longer trips on road to get to trails. The 690 is alot more comfortable on road while still being plenty capable offroad. It weighs the same as an XR650L which has been used offroad for 30+ years.
I've been riding 690 Enduro (MY08, 250mm suspension travel) for 6 years. I enjoy the versatility of the 690 Enduro. I can ride 40km's of highway to work in the morning and after work offroad back home (everything from gravel roads, to single tracks). I can join my friends riding proper enduro bikes and I can ride anywhere where they can. Only thing to remember is the weight, sunk 690 Enduro is heavy bike to lift by yourself. I don't ride much of pavement and I've been using only knobbies during the last 5 years. IMO 690 Enduro is definitely a beast as an offroad bike ;) I've been thinking of getting 250-300CC 2-stroke enduro but I wouldn't like to loose the possibility to use highway for fast travelling from point A to B. Greetings from Finland!
Very true, I am now on a big offroad trip in south europe with friends (crf 250, t7 and es700) and before I didn't know what I and the big 700 were capable of. As long as you keep momentum, you can do very much on this bike, like for ex. steep rocky hills and even creeks full of medium-sized rocks. It was crazy. And my mate from malta on the t7 is used to these conditions, so it even was not a problem on the adv bike
i don't ever ride enduros I only ride supermoto and I ride right next to my Enduro friends hitting all the same stuff you just gotta wheelie over some stuff with a supermoto. I have 2018 701 (best year all the engine upgrades with no tech) supermoto and it crushes off road literally anything I want with some anakee adventures on it. keeps up with my dirt bike friends no problem. plus it's beast on the highway. ride to work on it every day
Enduro is perfect offroad because of the service intervals. You can easily make the smcr to Enduro. Also, 50/50 tires on the sumo do very well for the casual ofroad rider. I even climb trails on slicks. Just don't rip it too hard. This is the sickest bike in the world. Always had it and will always have one.
Enduro R is for gravel road cruising. Some areas have miles and miles of maintained rock roads. That’s what these bikes work best for but it’s rarely discussed.
True, I live in the northwest so I do a lot of single track riding. I have three sets of rims for my KTM 500 I have my off-road set dual sports set super Moto set I ride my bike on the road just to get to the trails. slap my super Moto on when I cruise through town just to have a little fun. it’s more affordable to own a couple sets of rims than a couple different bikes at least for me. can’t wait to hear your 690 with some exhaust on it.
If I were planning to ride logging roads, gravel roads, and gentle dirt roads, I think the Enduro model would be great. The bike is just too heavy for serious single track. The SM is truly built for ripping pavement and it is freaking awesome. I have taken my 701 SM on gravel roads and it is OK, but I am afraid I would blow a tire and be stranded. I use mine as a road bike.
Put some Shinko 705 ADV tires on your 701 SM and you can ride anywhere you want without issue. I;ve ridden over glass and beat the ehll out of my Shinko 705 dual sport tires on my YZ450FX supermoto. Those tires are dang near bulletproof and last a long time. I still have the same set of Shinkos from 2018. And with the Shinko 705 tires you can still rip through the corners on the street without issue just as you would street tires. If you ever get a puncture, it is a quick fix with a a tire plug kit because they are tubeless.
@@CycleCruza How do the stiffer forks hold up off road though? Think I'd prefer the WP Xplore rather than the WP Apex off road for sure and aparently the Xplore handle well o road too.
Get the Wings exhaust. You will not be disappointed. Great sound and looks awesome. There are 3 dB inserts for it that allow you to get the exhaust note to suite your preference. Really easy installation also.
So much truth here. The ADV market strives on the "go big or go home", especially where I come from the big old dudes want big bikes to go with their big egos. Don't forget mid-life crisis, in South Africa most ADV riders are 50+ and most ADV riders will ride be on-road and with minimal off-road use. Anyways the really big ADV bikes are ridden for the comfort and touring ability.
Hands down the best options for a supermoto are the Ducati Hypermotard Mono RVE or KTM 690 SMC R. Though I'd definitely wait for the update on the KTM next year as their throwing everything at it to compete with the Mono RVE. I was honestly surprised how much fun the KTM 690 was when I test rode it, so the update next year will easily make it a serious top contender for best supermoto that even Ducatistas will have to appreciate.
Local dealer wanted 18k OTD for a new 698 rve…..I paid $8k for my 2020 ktm 690 smc…..Ducati is crazy and people are even crazier for paying $20k for a supermoto
@@gbulldog35 Supposedly KTM is throwing everything at the 690 SMC R next year to really rival the Mono RVE. The real question is what will be the sticker price for those upgrades. If they price it above the Mono then the Ducati still beats it out. One thing that definitely needs to change is the Halogen headlamp. It's 2024 come on KTM. Yeah you can get a LED headlamp now but it's a option and not standard. I just think a bike shouldn't have a Halogen headlamp now.
Cycle cruza i think you dont really know what your talking about because you lack off road experience, i have owned many 650's, 450's and 250 dirtbike and let me tell you if i had only 1 bike to have it would be the ktm 690enduro or husqvarna 701, i can follow all my buddys off road on their 450s i have ridden single track many times with it did some big hill climbs even hit some jumps with it but i have knobbys on it, the trails i go to some are 60miles from home and i love the 701 on the highway its so smooth compared to a drz400 or wr250r. Its the best of both worlds but i dont go crazy on road i dont want a ticket so i dont need those shitty supermoto wheels that do very crappy off road absolutely no traction in mud or sand you would wash out and fall with those supermoto wheels
Totally agree on that one, think CycleCruza never properly rode offroad. Ive only seen vids where he dropped the bike trying to ride over a log with 17 inch wheels
You have the dirt buddies. If you don't have dirt buddies, 99% of the riding will be on tarmac. That is my problem. The other problem is 75HP with 21" non radial tyre on front. Begs for sweet front slides on tarmac.
@@CycleCruza That would be an interesting comparison because the 705 is described by Shinko as a 70% on road tire while dunlop describes the trailmax as a 60/40 tire. I think here in Colorado the difference would be noticeable but other places that have less extreme geography not so much.
It depends on what type of off-road riding, any gnarly off-road riding and you ar ebetter off on the 500 exc or 300 2 stroke. Most of the time we spend in on the street, where is a supermoto is mucn better.
@@CycleCruza not in my case. The problem with the two strokes or true enduro based bikes is they sit too long. I use my bikes to commute to work and if the bike isn’t street legal (very hard to plate a ‘true’ dirt bike in my area - your 450 could not get plate where I live) then it’s only purpose is to sit and get trailered to an off road event. The current 500 EXC models are paint shakers and besides that just the maintenance intervals would have me changing the oil every week or two. I am probably about 60/40 with my Enduro R since I can take advantage of dirt roads on my commute plus I do camp off of it from time to time. Have spent the last 3 summers exploring Arkansas and Oklahoma on it.
My Tuono weighs 399lb, I can't imagine trying to manage it offroad. The 690 is what 320lb? I'm from Ohio too, now in South Carolina. "I miss those Ohio back roads!
I have owned both the SMC and Enduro and to be honest the Enduro is a better bike for both ON-Road and Off-road use cuz the suspension on the factory supermoto version is way too stiff if you take it offroad. The Enduro however, when fitted with supermoto wheels feels great still. Suspension is softer but still lots of fun on pavement. 17 inch wheels with knobbies will still work off-road but you shouldn't take it to rough single track terrain. You risk that tire coming off the bad and losing air as you ride. 21 inch wheel with offroad tires will just roll over un-even terrain better.
A few years ago, I had the money to buy it. I wanted it. I mean I REALLY wanted the KTM 690 SM. Knowing my limited budget, and limited mechanic abilities, I decided for the SAME price, I could buy 2 (two) KLX 300's. So I did. I bought a KLX 300 DS >and< a KLX 300 SM. I still fanboi and daydream about the 690 SM, but for the reasons stated.... daydreams will have to do.
We all fit the tubeliss systems on our dual sport bikes so that we can deflate too almost zero pressure and also plug on the trail, not a decent recent to get the SMC, besides most new adventure bikes come with tubeless 21" front rims, like on my Triumph Rally Pro.
The 690 is a VERY capable bike. You as a rider will not get close to reaching that bikes limits off-road. I used a vstrom 650 adv bike off-road for 2-3 hours everyday in serious off-roading. It takes a higher skill set than a dirt bike, but there’s a TON of riders like me. They’re not some myth. I met a lot of them though ADV Rally camps. And the idea of 350lb super capable off roader that is unicorn dual sport sounds amazing to me. You’re really get the best of both worlds. Ktm is the only one that has made a unicorn bike, there really is no other competition. It’s 20% the bike 80% the rider at the end of the day. the 690 is loved known for its abilities. And just because you’re not at that skill level doesn’t mean it’s rare or doesn’t exist. Supermotos are the niche ones not dual sports. Bikes like the dr650 and klr650 are super common for a reason.
Was looking on the husky and ktm websites, biggest differences seem to be suspension and front brakes, i think enduro forks are different and shock maybe, obviously valving and travel is different. Ground clearance might be less on supermoto version also. Bike front brake is worse for offroading, both for clearance and brake lockup. You can run heavy duty tubes, and also tire sealant as far as punctures go. I think anyone buying new already knows what vetsion would be best for them.
Can you recommend best helmet comms? Currently I’m using my AirPods pro but I want to talk on the phone and not have issues with sound quality. Thanks😊
690 enduro is awesome on dirt. I smash through washes and even single track here in SoCal on big dirt bikes. Malcom smith trail etc. just takes some skillz and experience. DON’T lay it down 😂 and yea we bang out 150 miles on dirt east in a day with 4-6 hours of off-road riding. You gotta be in shape for riding and we do it weekly.
You definitely have to be in shape for serious off-road riding. I get winded just riding through my local woods for a few minutes. 🤣 However, it is more fun riding off-road than running on a treadmill. I will say the 690 Enduro and Supermoto carry their 350 lb weight well. However, when I hop on my YZ450FX it feels night and day lighter, like I got on a mountain bike compared to the 690.
You absolutely do need a minimum of 19 on the front to go offroad yes you absolutely do… 17 gets stuck on twigs in your way and makes the impacts on every imperfection in your path severely uncomfortable.. makes riding offroad miserable and for that reason alone you 100% need a bigger front wheel.. you’re insane for making that claim
Tires are one thing steered me away from dual sport so far. Pirelli tires have not usually been my favorite, but ones on my newer ones seem really good. Debatable when need to keep same or try out those shinkos. My scooter after riding more bikes can definitely feel the sketchiness of it more. I don't think the shocks are serviceable but I saw someone on TH-cam do it I should take it to the dealer one day and have him try. Or if I had a bunch of money really good suspension on it and really good tires. I at least want to try and find a really good set of tires next time I replace it. I'm guessing the end of next season. Scooter still runs fine starts up instantly no longer how long I leave it but it definitely probably could use a good run through of everything. Fluids, cables
@@CycleCruza Benelli Zafferano 250cc 2018. Dont think can get here anymore. Limited on larger scooters here. Ive had a Honda Reflex 250, first bike, Tao Tao 50, Yamaha Tmax 500. Here in us we have Burgman may only be 400 now, Kymco ak 550 very decent minor quirks on one I test drove...at my dealer now 6k. Yamaha Tmax 300. I think Kymco has a couple other smaller ones. Otherwise whatever powersports chinese versions. Im sure there are more, but those are the major larger ones. Bmw has a 400 here still i think too. Keeway is going to be coming us soon.
You have to realize location is key here, where you and the majority of people live there’s terrible or no offroad…… Here in the pnw it’s everywhere and endless epic offroad and on road. The enduro makes more sense here.
Man cycle cruza I've been wanting to pull the trigger on another bike i like the adventure biles but I would like the 450 range type bikes, the supermoto bike cost to much even the used ones.
You can't just put a 17" wheel on the front of the Enduro R to replace the 21". The forks are different for the 2 bikes, and if you do that, the trail on the suspension will be so small, the freeway will be sooooo scary. I did this, and ended up having to make a bunch of mods to make it stable at speed.
690 Enduro is more like rally bike platform and great on dirt open roads, its not light enduro.Smc is ok but enduro is simple a better overall do it all.
WR250R is bulletproof except for the wheels like most dual sports, possible tube puncture makes it vulnerable, reason I switched to supermoto with tubeless ADV tires instead.
Yeah Id choose the supermoto. If I want a dirt bike Ill buy a dirt bike. I dont really care to have a bike that can 'sorta' do both. A pure bred dirt bike is so much more fun. I haaate having a heavy bike in the dirt. I like riding tracks and stuff too. And that just isnt fun on a heavy ass bike!
Just for laughs, why not get a KTM 1090 or 1290 as your next bike? They are much more your size and the performance specs are good! I think I'm getting a 1090 soon as a 2nd bike, and I'm rather excited about it. A close relative is going into long term lock up and doesn't want his 1090 to go to waste. I'll ride it like it's stolen 😈 Yeeeeee Haaaaa
If you cannot put 75HP on the dirt, get the supermoto. If you mostly ride dirt, get an enduro bike. Radial tyres are millions of times better and safer on road and i don't think you can get a decent 21" road tyre. My 4 year diablo rosso corsa's on a crappy suspension CB500X have 5 times the traction than 1 year Metzeler Tourance have on my KLX 250S which already wasted from heat cycles caused by aggressive tarmac riding. Drifting both tyres going 70km/h on the KLX is fun but proper 17" tyres would.be so much better. You lose the ease of mind when going off road but since you should better not go alone off road, plus other reasons, you end up going only less than 1% of the time, at best! And for that, even a slick is enough. Plus, i recently got the taste of going flat, on tarmac, 5km away frok civilisation. Ok, i should have a Fast with me, but with tubeless the leak would evolve slower and would be so much easier to repair.
Ktm builds specific bikes, smr is a supermoto, for street, different suspension, wheels, gear ratios, etc. 690 r has longer suspension travel then even the regular enduro . 3 different bikes. Its not a yamaha or suzuki where you change the wheels and call it a supermoto.
Some people say that in normal tarmac conditions, it is better to take a 690 enduro and covert it to SM, because SMC R is too stiff and handles properly only if pressed much. I would really like a sincere opinion on that frok a street rider that has ridden both. I am about to get an SMC R but worried it will be sluggish in tight mountain hairpins (which is one of the main playgrounds near me) if not ridden in race mode.
Exactly! You can't truly make a proper supermoto by just slapping on some supermoto wheels on the Enduro and you can't make a proper Enduro just putting on some dirt wheels on the supermoto. You are better served having an Enduro and supermoto.

IMO 690 Enduro is definitely a beast as an offroad bike ;)
I've been thinking of getting 250-300CC 2-stroke enduro but I wouldn't like to loose the possibility to use highway for fast travelling from point A to B.
Having a super Moto like having a pocket knife versus a dual sport is like a multi tool.
It really comes down to what type of riding you do, most riders usually end up riding more street than off-road so a supermoto makes more sense.
Enduro R was the only thing available in this country when i bought mine. But i love her!
I’m still a newish rider and you can absolutely smash single track on the 690 if your lookin for an all in one it’s hard to beat
Get the Wings exhaust. You will not be disappointed. Great sound and looks awesome. There are 3 dB inserts for it that allow you to get the exhaust note to suite your preference. Really easy installation also.
If you ever plan to run the TAT, you are going to want some sort of dirt oriented tires, with knobby’s. I promise you!
It looks cool Cruza
Thank you!
@@slomango7927 Your local dealer is ripping people off. I paid $15,500 OTD for my RVE.
What kind of updates are coming to the 690? I wish it had a better dash/screen with more info for the US versions!
Enduro can do most everything the supermoto can but I wouldn't take the moto too deep off road.
I put Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires on my 701 enduro. Perfect combination here in Colorado. 👌👍
I need to try those next, very similar to the Shinko 705 but more expensive.
@@CycleCruza That would be an interesting comparison because the 705 is described by Shinko as a 70% on road tire while dunlop describes the trailmax as a 60/40 tire. I think here in Colorado the difference would be noticeable but other places that have less extreme geography not so much.
Big reason to get the Enduro R is the additional front suspension travel (250mm versus 215mm) if you do any off pavement riding.
I have an Akro on my one and a Leo Vince on the other, the Leo Vince is half the price, but just as nice, if not a tad louder.
Good Bike choice. I was rooting for you to come to the ktm team a while back.
So far I'm impressed with this KTM bike. Great build quality and fun.
OK, if you say you can’t have proper fun offroad on 690 Enduro R, you have NO idea 😂 I’m outta ere 😂
I have the 2023 ktm 1290 super adventure R heavy yeah but easy to pick up. I hunt with it ride alot off-road with it to its a beast off-road
I still fanboi and daydream about the 690 SM, but for the reasons stated.... daydreams will have to do.
hey those are cool bikes too...
Love the plastics/color of your SMC here. Can Geta 80/20 type tire for SMC so gravel roads can be slayed. Where did you source them?
We all fit the tubeliss systems on our dual sport bikes so that we can deflate too almost zero pressure and also plug on the trail, not a decent recent to get the SMC, besides most new adventure bikes come with tubeless 21" front rims, like on my Triumph Rally Pro.
damn that bike is lookin good brother
Which one converts to the “adventure bike” the most easily? That’s the one I want
Can you recommend best helmet comms? Currently I’m using my AirPods pro but I want to talk on the phone and not have issues with sound quality. Thanks😊
Dam Cycle Cruza you got me laughing my ass off with that back woods shit 😂lol shinko 705 is for life all the way.
supermoto is king. ppl just get jealous bro. supermotos can do everything best type of bike out there
690 enduro is awesome on dirt.
Where do y’all do this I’d love to come out and do this I’m in LA
You absolutely do need a minimum of 19 on the front to go offroad yes you absolutely do… 17 gets stuck on twigs in your way and makes the impacts on every imperfection in your path severely uncomfortable.. makes riding offroad miserable and for that reason alone you 100% need a bigger front wheel.. you’re insane for making that claim
How do you install the mirrors please make a video of it
Tires are one thing steered me away from dual sport so far.
Eh I need to add a scooter too! I started on a scooter and was involved with the scooter community. What scooter do you have?
I would love to get a cms ktm but honestly husqvarna 701 looks better without mods ktm gets to look better but you need to invest a lot of money.
Sportster Next get it
Where can I buy those mirrors from
You have to realize location is key here, where you and the majority of people live there’s terrible or no offroad…… Here in the pnw it’s everywhere and endless epic offroad and on road. The enduro makes more sense here.
I have got my 2019 690 enduro r good for both
Man cycle cruza I've been wanting to pull the trigger on another bike i like the adventure biles but I would like the 450 range type bikes, the supermoto bike cost to much even the used ones.
Everybody don't listen to this guy. Get the Enduro. You can wheelie, but you are opened up to dirt. I've owned both.
That's all the bike ya need 😊
I prefer ktm original plastics/graphics
But do what u like, it’s ur bike bro
I do agree sumo would be better for me than the enduro, however
You can't just put a 17" wheel on the front of the Enduro R to replace the 21". The forks are different for the 2 bikes, and if you do that, the trail on the suspension will be so small, the freeway will be sooooo scary. I did this, and ended up having to make a bunch of mods to make it stable at speed.
Interesting what else did you have to do ? What made it unstable
I'm fortunate enough to have one of each 😝
What do you think of Beta motorcycles?
Dude is already a Beta.
690 Enduro is more like rally bike platform and great on dirt open roads, its not light enduro.Smc is ok but enduro is simple a better overall do it all.
For my first dual sport im looking for a 2020 wr250r. Put my r1 up for sale a few days ago
Go bigger
WR250R is bulletproof except for the wheels like most dual sports, possible tube puncture makes it vulnerable, reason I switched to supermoto with tubeless ADV tires instead.
Def go bigger get drz-400 at least
@@Crusserr I don’t really wanna go fast anymore. That r1 flys
I ride a 600 pound adventure bike on the craters of the moon everyday ❗
You must get really tired?
@@CycleCruza well, I do get winded do to no oxygen ❗
My 850gsa has 21" tubeless front
bike looks good but... i like the orange better.
if you want enduro you can buy Sur-Ron LightBee ,Cheaper and more fun
Just use ultra heavy duty tubes and you’ll be fine.
I got the Enduro aversion because I got a hell of a deal on it and I could just buy super Moto wheels once I burn through these knobbies
Do u even watch this channel or just stumble on this channel? Cyclecruza isn't about fast life
@@scottubz Yes faceless one, I *never* miss a CC or BugOutMoto video. Probably subbed over 10 years now. He'd fit the 1090 like a hand in a glove.
2-3 horse power!? How about 10bhp where it matters (midrange)
Black plastic ,,, nope, KTM orange is better looking.
For hunting
Enduro r made the 690 it just a brother sister thing. Suspension is different that about it.
completely different suspension not even the same fork offset if you want super Moto, do not get the Enduro
Exactly! You can't truly make a proper supermoto by just slapping on some supermoto wheels on the Enduro and you can't make a proper Enduro just putting on some dirt wheels on the supermoto. You are better served having an Enduro and supermoto.
Thats why i have both!!! Sm and an Es!!!
I ride street to ride offroad.
I’m only buying the enduro because lt’s cheaper in my country 🤷♂️
Supermoto!!
I like that Gas Gas 700 SM that just came out. That ish sick!!
Dope.
