    A quick check is to unbolt the fuel pump from the crank case. Once you have it away from the crank case (with the fuel lines still attached,) squeeze the primer bulb a few times. If fuel comes out of the port on the back of the fuel pump, you know the diaphram is leaking fuel into the crank case. I chased this same problem for a week.

    All I can say is , I’m so happy now. I have been working on my Yamaha 1996 75hp for two weeks and ordered lots of kits for carburetors and new hoses for fuel. Rebuild carburetors and the bottom cylinder was poor gas , the water around my boat was all gas on top of water and it used almost 2 gallons of gas just trying it out. So I want to thank you and I will subscribe and watch your channel. 🤦🏻‍♂️🙏🏽

    Thank you very much for this video, made my fault-finding much easier, and repair almost instant(tried a make-shift membrane that was not petrol-resistant, but it worked to prove your point). I only now need to replace the membrane with something more permanent(or as long a real membrane can work...).
    I actually tore a muscle in my shoulder trying to start my Suzuki DT-9A(1975, in mint condition), ran a few seconds on the third pull, and then nothing; me brain-dead from eating really strong antibiotics for a week due to acute blood-poisoning from stepping in a 3 inch dirty screw into my foot, feeling like a superhuman, pulled a "few" (30-40) more times, did not go well. Your video made my newly gained anxiety much more tolerable. And if i had seen your video prior to my attempts , i would not have this pain in my shoulder while breathing or trying to lay down. Thank you again for sharing this information!
    I think i will watch all your other videos, just in case...

      i dont remember the name of the material that is used for this but i do know it can be found online, its a little pricy but a piece of it could repair the pump at least 4x.. oh, you can also recut carefully saround the holes on the old diophram and have the rip ofset to go under the sealed edges, just move the hole over, so very glad this helped you my friend and thanks for the responce, did you see my other vids on performance. i can only say i went from 26mph to 34.4 mph. i really do love these kinds of boats and motors. Have a great Summer, God Bless ya brother..

    • @gonefishing1939
      @gonefishing1939  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense. i think i would do as you are, Start with the fuel pump. My next big question would be the baffles reeds. When you take off the carb, You will see the baffles, they look like flat shinny rectangles that are made of flat flexable sheets of stainless. i may also be that one or more of them are frozen shut and not allowing air fuel mixture in, maybe even damaged. they act like the valuves on a v8 engine, open and close to let mixed fuel in with each stroke but shut to create a one direction flow into the head.

    Great tip 👍🏼 Another possible culprit for blooding outboards is if you have a primer solenoid they tend to leak and sometimes unplugging the tiny hose to check shows no sign but when plugged the pressure causes a leak so best thing to do is pinch tight the fuel line going to or from electric primer solenoid.

    50HP Yamaha doing the same thing. Rough idle, floods out at 1000 rpm. Had a boat doing this before and it turned out to be a collapsing fuel line. The inner lining of the hose separated from the rubber, and the motor would suck it flat and no fuel could get through. Nearly same symptoms, except no dripping gas and no gas on the water at idle etc. I'm sure you're right.... I am going to replace pump and filter and try again. Thanks for the info!

    I have a DT65 and a DT150 the last one us fuel injected(port injection) but the 65 hp is carb(3 of them)....the 65 boggs down when throttled and i cleaned all 3 carbs but Then i found that IT sucked false air between the carbs and the reed valves which causes a lean condition,but when you used the choke IT GOT Worse...IT sucked more false air and almost no gas so IT would just die...Im putting new gasket in behandling the carbs so håpefulle that does IT.My primer bulb gets real hard when primed so i dont think i have flooding,but i will check the fuel pump next before i drag IT out to sea😂😂

    • @gonefishing1939
      @gonefishing1939  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bogging down? i know it sounds crazy but there are 2 different sounds when it boggs down. one is real theouty and the other sounds to lean. I do feel its important to still check the fuel pump diophram because you said chocking motor makes it worse. if it were lean, applying a little chock should make it rev up, not down.

    • @busdriver1469
      @busdriver1469 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gone Fishing Yes but IT drags air in between the reed and carb so when you put down the choke intstead of getting more fuel an less air(a richer mix...) IT sucks more air in between the carbs and Even less gasoline....so IT boggs down....to much air in relation to gas...

    How did your motor idle when this happened. The exact same thing happened to my Mercury 90 2 stroke (1983) Was running perfect and then all of the sudden started popping and bogging down. But it idled fine. I can tell it's running super rich when it's bogging. Mine has 6 cylinders and 3 carbs, and it sound like when I give it full throttle, I'm only running on 4 cylinders. I'm wondering if this could be my problem. A carb rebuild will cost me about $800 for all 3. I'd hate to spend all that money and still have my same problem.

    Hi, it looks the same to mine evinrude 4pk. But only happens with external fuel supply. The small tank on the engine runs the fuel, after selecting, direct to the carburator, due to gravity force. So in this case use the internal tank for trouble shooting.

      that makes alot of sense. It really is amazing how on a fuel line the has to create negitive pressure to draw fuel from tanks needs to be perfect with no holes, even the smallest of pin hole can drop pressure ar add bubbles in fuel line creating vaper locks in line. thanks for the insight on this post.

      i think your doing the right thing. Its very rare the the card will flood out an outboard after its running. From everything im learning, the only thing that does that is a bad fuel pump based on crank case pressures. when it leaks, it actually sucks fuel from the pump into the crank case. I have a 1992 Mercury XR6 150 hp that died on me as I was idling down the lake at about 3mph. I couldn't get it running again. It was very hard to start and was running extremely rich. As soon as I took it out of neutral it would die on me before I had a chance to put it in gear. I did notice that the fuel bulb didn't seem to get as hard as it used to but I didn't know if it was just my imagination until seeing this video and I believe I'm having the same issue as you. Once I got the boat home and tried to figure out what happened I noticed that when I opened the throttle a ton of gas gushed out of the butterfly valves of the lower carb (from a stack of 3 carbs). Gas continued flowing out of the carb until I crimped the fuel line to stop the flow. When I took the carb off, I couldn't understand upon inspection how the fuel was gushing out of the carb from behind the butterfly valves until I came across your video. This makes perfect sense if it's coming from inside the cylinder and not through the carb because as I was taking apart my lower carb and upon a visual inspection of the float and pin, everything looks extremely clean and not worn out. Can you let me know how you pressure tested the fuel pump? Did you just prime the bulb and your wife saw the seal flapping where the crack was or how was this done? I was about to buy 3 carb rebuild kits and it sounds like I would've been wasting my money. I hope I can 100% diagnose that this is the same issue I'm having. I'm not a mechanic but I tend to fix things myself whenever I can. Also, just so you know this video is marked as age restricted so you may want to fix that so we don't have to click that we want to view this adult video. Thanks for the video. I hope you get a chance to respond to this and hopefully give me a little more guidance on the fuel pump seal test before I jump into it.

      Very good describing your motors issue. In hindsight. I could have checked the fuel pump by priming the fuel line bulb. if the fuel bulb does not get hard, its the diophram in the fuel pump located on the side of your motor, look for electric lines. if no electric lines, it works of crank case pressure changes, kinda amazing. you can order a new fuel pump online. i did everything you did, polished the carbs, replaced pens and seats. nothing worked until i replaced the fuel pump. i hooked mine up to water for cooling and checked each plug after repairing pump by removing spark plugs and then started the motor, careful not to run motor when you remove plugs, may get shocked very badly,lol.

      if you have any questions at all, id love to help you get it running. Also mine is running great after repairing the pump. if you do have other issues after repaired, it may be the float level in the carb. it has to be setting level.
      then check that the valve opens freely.

      @craigmartin7179 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for making that video. I think yours is the only one out there that describes the problem we both were having. I did use the bulb to see if it was leaking fuel after I unbolted it from the motor. Mine is the older motor (1992) Mercury XR6 so it works off compression from the motor, too. I clamped off the other two lines from my fuel pump and another key point you made in your video was talking about the bulb not getting hard when pumping it. I’ve been noticing this for a few times on the lake before I got stranded so there’s my fair warning that I didn’t give much thought to at the time. When I pumped the bulb it threw gas out of that hole that you talked about in your video. I went to the local boat shop and bought a rebuild kit for the fuel pump and now it works like a dream. $26.17 and I’m ready for water again. I bet I spent more than 40 hours watching and searching TH-cam videos before I came across yours. It’s funny how that happened too. I fell asleep watching TH-cam videos and woke up to yours playing. How weird is that? Perfect timing. I’m sooooo happy my boat is fixed again. The last time I was on the lake was sometime in September. I know it’s cold and Thanksgiving in a few days but I will be on the water fishing before the weekend. Thanks, again! Awesome information!!!

    The center hole that goes in to the motor... have you seen how big it should be? I se no hole in to the crankshaft, it's just drilled and then metal without any hole. If it's not a small hole, like on the side in there somewhere.. but it's not a hole straight in to the engine..
