  • This video shows how to test a 2 stroke Yamaha outboards low pressure fuel pump. the low pressure fuel pumps operate using a diaphragm. when this diaphragm goes bad or fails it will leak. this video shows the easy steps to diagnose a bad fuel pump, and with the cost of a new one these days its better to buy a new pump then a diaphragm kit.

    Thanks for this video. I just brought my first boat back in January 03’ skeeter zx225. Ran it all summer with no problems. I brought it from a dealer but I cleaned the o2 sensor and replaced the thermostats and fuel filter just for piece of mind. But the last two times I had it out while idling it would shut off and not start. So after several attempts to primp it would finally start the run just fine the rest of the trip. So after watching your video I found that all 3 of my pumps would leak when I loosened them and squeezed the primer bulb. So I have them ordered and hopefully it fixes the problem. Thank you again for the video liked and subscribed

    I did a fairly long list of parts swaps on my 2002 Yamaha VMAX 200 in the last 8 weeks. Thanks to your for helping to guide me with multiple videos on the same engine. I replaced thermostats/gaskets, VST filter/gasket, primary fuel filter/gasket, fuel primer bulb, post primary fuel filter 1 way fuel valve, new oil pump/strainer, new reservoir low oil sensor, engine oil tank sending unit, and usual lower unit oil and water seperator valve. Runs like a DREAM. Cranked immediately on just a tiny bump of the key. On examining all parts swapped I think the thermostats were shot which caused a shut down and my deep dive into this overhaul. Engine 22 years old. Only 300 hours. 2nd rebuild on the water pump on deck and good for another 5 years min in local fresh water. Thanks so much for your replies an assistance!!

    Good tips in this Video, would these cause primer bulbs to go soft ? (Intermittently) I’ve replaced primer bulb and all fuel line between engine and tank/ water separator. After mine quits and hand prime it will run fine for hours/days before this occurs again and engine is starved of fuel. No anti-siphon valve on tank. Fuel vent is free and clear..

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A sign of a bad low pressure fuel pump would be the need to pump the bulb while the outboard is running to keep the engine running at full speed. Essentially pumping by hand is taking over the fuel pump.
      You may have a slightly failing fuel pump. That’s barely keeping up giving you the intermittent issues.

Boat seems to run good at high speed but stalls at trolling speed. Carbs have been clean bowl reset. Also sometimes when I sit in fish even after the engine is warm I have trouble restarting the motor

      Have you changed the fuel hoses. They overtime collapse inside restricting fuel.
      Another thing to look at will be your fue bulb. They have one way valves that when they go bad get stuck restricting flow.
      Best way to diagnose this would be to run fresh fuel off an external tank. Buy new fuel hose and new bulb. Put it direct to engine and see how it runs. If it runs good you know the issue is from the fuel line back to the tank.
      I’d start with that. Then we can look into more difficult things to diagnose but do that and let me know how it goes

    What is the best way to winterize your boat motor. Would you recommend a ball valve to shut fuel off and let the carbs run out of fuel or what do you recommend

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Before this, run the engine on a mix of antifreeze. Therefore if any water remains in your heads it won’t freeze and cause issues. Run outboard on a fuel additive. Then
      If you have carbs, the carbs themselves have a brass drain screw located on the bowl. Remove it. Drain the fuel put screw back on. I’d also spray the engine with fogging oil by removing spark plugs and spraying the cylinders. Turn engine over for a sec or two to lubricate the entire cylinder. Add spark plugs back.
      Change your lower unit oil with fresh oil. Any water in your LU can crack your LU or bust seals during winter.
      Same goes for the motor if it’s a 4stroke.

      Ahh the HPDI. I’ve gone through this with my own HPDI. I recommend changing your neutral safety switch. It’s located by the control cables on the outboard. Look for a blue plug connected to a small switch that I believe is held by a single screw.
      Keep in mind HPDI are extremely picky about clean fuel. If this doesn’t cure it you may need to go through & clean your entire fuel system. Filters, Mystery Filters & injectors

I did rebuild the fuel pump a few years ago and for fun tested everything on the motor doing my own videos. one thing that i have neglected is putting a new fuel filter on. I drain all the fuel out of the main tank and used it in the car so it's empty currently. • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bulb should be pretty hard, however check to see if it remains hard say a week after using the boat. if it's still rock hard. the bulb may be bad and the rubber has lost its elasticity.
      Usually issues at high RPM are caused by fuel restriction. Filters changed are easy to do. Also have you checked to see if there is water in the fuel? When you pump gas can you feel the fuel vent pushing air out rapidly?
      just trying to check off the easy things before diving into the engine & parts.
      After all this I would then recommend using an external fuel tank to run the engine to rule out the possibility of a stuck one way valve on the pickup, a dirty/clogged screen in the pickup, bad gas, contaminated fuel, vent issue etc. if she runs great on the external you will no where to focus on next. If it still runs poorly you can now focus on the engine itself.

Temp is normal and boat hits 58009-6000 RPS at WOT and hits 70 mph. The issue is that it takes 3-5 attempts to get it up on plane. I have ran the Same prop (with prop plugs) and pitch since I bought it new. I have changed the primer bulb and main fuel line from the tank to the engine. I have the changed the main fuel filter and the impeller, and the ECU. Any suggestions for what be the cause of the struggle to get up on plane?

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My guess is a fuel restriction somewhere.
      Take a sample of your fuel from tank. Make sure it’s clean, clear and no water.
      I’d then do a compression check even though it’s still getting up in RPM.
      Then id go down this list of things
      1. Get rid of any and all gray fuel lines on the engine.
      2. Does your fuel pickup tube have a screen at the bottom? Can be partially clogged
      3. Does your tank have a spring loaded check valve on the fuel fitting? Notorious for issues
      4. Clean VST?
      5. Lastly I’d send injectors out for servicing once all has been cleaned and checked.
      Not sure if this model has an electric choke, but I’ve seen these symptoms on a stuck choke in the choke position.

      Definitely check your fuel. If it’s older than a year old, I’d remove all fuel and put new fuel. That will eliminate the possibility of stale/old fuel. Also helps eliminate contamination on fuel as an issue.
      Secondly all fuel filters should be changed out for new. (Seasonal maintenance anyways, so not an added expense)
      I’d do a carb overhaul. Pretty simple if you buy the OEM carb kits and soak the carbs over night and use compressed air.
      Lastly I’d perform a link&sync on the outboard once the overhauled carbs are installed.
      This is all capable if you are somewhat mechanically handy. Will save you some money as well vs a shop.

I pump the ball then try to start it and it starts but when I put it in gear it sputters and stops. My mechanic has told me the pressure is good. I’d put clean filters if you have any fuel/water spin on filters. I’d also look into the possibility of a bad bulb (they have check valves in them that go bad) and look into the possibility of a collapsing fuel line. If it is not the black USCG fuel hose there’s a big chance your fuel hose is collapsing inside the hose. Can’t tell on the outside

    I have a 2013 F150LA. Starts and runs for a minute or so, then sputters out like it's starving for fuel. Checked water separator, and fuel filter, both were good. Then checked the oil and it's almost spilling out of the dipstick. I called a local outboard mechanic and he said test the fuel pumps for pressure, but he would bet that's the problem. Do you agree? And is this the same method I would use to test? On the diagrams, my fuel pumps look a little different than these(Part number 63P-24410-10-00). I think it was old fuel so I am thinking of taking the carbs out and cleaning them and I cleaned out the old fuel from tank. As far as the carbs. Yes a rebuild kit will be needed and highly recommended. Go OEM for the kits as many of the knockoff kits have sub par parts with really bad gaskets and orings that will lead to fuel leaks.

      Have you tried cycling the key for the first start?
      Basically turn power switch on then you’d prime the bulb. Go to the key and turn key to on position (not start just turn to on) leave in the position for 10seconds

All plugs look the same.. new plugs new after market coil packs. 4 micron water fuel separator and a 10 micron after that and the factory water fuel separator on engine.. boat had 98 hours on it when I got it from my uncle January 2023 and now has 250.
    Could this be a fuel pump issue?

    Can these go bad without leaking externally?
    My '06 yama150txr started & idled perfect after sitting 2 years (cancer sucks lol). Tied to dock and shut it off. Never ran again. It'll run on starting fluid, and one single time it actually started on starter fluid and then idled perfectly on its own fuel for about 30 seconds before I shut it off. I tried starting again, and it won't run without starting fluid. I'm not exactly sure where to go from here. Is there any other way of testing them, or does it sound like another issue altogether?

      Sitting for two years I’d replace everything from the fuel lines to the motor. That includes bulb and spin on fuel filters.. I’d definitely also get the tank pumped and put clean fuel.
      You can try this using an external tank with fresh fuel and new lines as an alternative for now.
      I’d also highly suggest if a carb model, redoing your carbs using OEM carb kits. If it’s fuel injected you may want to look into your injectors and Definitely clean the VST tank.

      @@jeeplove_8831 ok if my memory is correct this is a 2 stroke carbed outboard. Your fuel pumps which is two of them should look like the one in the video. It is your only fuel pump and it’s not electric but works on a vacuum created by the engine where it is mounted. (They are notorious for going bad) my suggestion is replace them now regardless so that you know you have to new fuel pumps. Yamaha says these are a 3 year service item. Buy only OEM Yamaha pumps avoid Amazon and eBay as they sell plenty of fakes.
      The only other “fuel pump” would be your hand pump fuel bulb that is on your fuel line before the outboard.

    Need your help…
    This is a copy and paste message I wrote in an outboard forums.
    Just bought my first boat and owner said it sat for 6 years. its a 2000 mercury 90hp engine outboard. Before selling he took it to a mechanic who cleaned out the carbs and pistons. The mechanic thought he cleaned out the gas tank to empty but accidentally left 10 gallons in there, I filled up the rest so 20 gallons were in the gas tank. there was still 10 gallons with 6 year old gas. I ran the boat for 1 day on the water using my big motor for about 30 minutes before switching to my kicker. I then flushed out the gas and cleaned out the tank and put new gas...
    With the OLD GAS at full throttle my RPM's were at 3,200 @ 25 MPH. it would run for about a solid 30 seconds then start dropping to 3,000 and back up to 3,200 RPMs. This would repeat forever untill I drop RPMS a bit to under 3,000 RPMs and the issue stopped.
    With the NEW GAS it runs at 4,000 RPMS @ 30 MPH and after about a solid 30 seconds starts doing the same exact issue. Drops to 3,800 or so and back up. It will do this until i drop the speed.
    I cannot attach the video but I do not think this is a issue with Old gas causing the CARB to be clogged because Right when i got on the water it started doing it. and if the person cleaned out the carbs or other stuff it wouldnt be consistant. What else can i check without spending hundreds of dollars on a mechanic!
    PLEASE HELP!!!
    I checked spark plugs, gas line, ignition coil, everything’s good. I unscrewed fuel pump and it looks good but how do I know if it’s bad?

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok here’s my advice. I wouldn’t go off what they told you was done.
      I’d overhaul the carbs with carb kits. Clean then and then you know 100% that’s done.
      I’d also replace all the fuel filters. If old gas ran through em replace them.
      New fuel lines as they could collapse internally if they are old and sat for a while. New fuel primer bulb too
      Also some fuel pickup tubes on the fuel tank have a screen at the bottom that gets clogged up. I’d double check that and make sure that’s not the case here.
      If you do all that and still have issues then we can look directly at the engine and try to diagnose it some more. .

      Ok so very basic, two features on an outboard that will not allow it to start. Usually it cuts the spark to the spark plugs but it may cut fuel to the pumps as well.
      You have a killswitch, usually a red lanyard to a button. Make sure that’s installed.
      Secondly the throttle needs to be positioned in neutral for the engine to crank over.
      For fuel, there’s a bulb in-line sonewhere between the tank and the motor. Hand pump it till it gets hard. That is necessary everytime you go to start the engine at the beginning of a trip.
      Let me know if that helped
      We can continue troubleshooting if not

    Greetings my dear friend.. There is a 50 hp thatsu engine. 3 injectors are intact, the brain is intact, the fuel pump is working... but I think there is no fuel reaching the pistons. It works when I spray brake lining spray inside. I am a mechanical technician myself. Apart from the 3 injectors of the engine, there are also injectors inside the compartment called the log, I think they adjust the air and gasoline mixture. Could it be one of these? What is your advice? I wish you a good day... From Tuzla, Istanbul Greetings... Gasoline reaches the injectors. In addition to the fuel pump, there is also a pressure box that pushes the fuel forward.

    • @ReelTeaseFishing
      @ReelTeaseFishing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok so when fuel is not reaching the pistons my first thought would be to look at your kill switch also known as your Emergency lanyard. Is it on?
      Secondly how are your batteries, fully charged? Low batteries can sometimes cause intermittent issues.
      Does your engine have a neutral safety switch?
      These three things can cause the motor to not push fuel into the pistons so that the engine won’t start.
      Let me know what you find out

      Did this problem happen before you did the carbs? Remove the silencer assembly (black plastic that covers the carbs and see if you see some fuel leaking from a carb when you shut it down. My guess is one of the carbs is set wrong and allowing too much fuel, flooding your outboard after it gets to temp.

The engine would die on idle after its been working for a while or was hard to start after getting cold. Then it would shut off when getting in gear. Could it be a failing low pressure fuel pump?? I ll try your suggestion to check for leaking of fuel, although the pilot jets and idle timing are set to yamaha specs..😅
