Fix Mercury Fuel Problem, Carburetors OK, Bad Fuel pump - OOW Outdoors

- I had some fuel problems with my 9.9 4 stroke outboard. I found out that is was a loose screw in the fuel pump. At first i through it was a clogged fuel line but it wasn't. Carburetors are good too.
Smptoms: After priming the fuel bulb the engine can start up and idle but about 1 minute later is will cut out. While it is running the engine will cut out faster depending on speed. So you'll have to manually pump the bulb every 15 seconds to keep the engine running.

Thanks for the video. Used it to confirm my fuel pump was working to rule it out as my problem. Saved me money, I was about to buy one. I just placed the fuel hose into a water bottle to catch the fuel so it didn't go everywhere.

Thank you. That was exactly what my Merc was doing today and I wasn’t terribly worried but still it was bothersome as hell. I couldn’t stop thinking about what was going on with it. I worked as a marine mechanic many years ago. Good diagnostics. I have a new 9.8 Merc with 30 minutes of run time. You don't expect trouble but I have plenty. Carb bowl gasket leaked,replaced it and it still leaked. Had to use sealer. Idle screw mixture which has a brass plug (drill out carefully) was turned out only 1/4 of a turn. Now I think the fuel pump may share your issue. I also suspect that these new gas tanks with the pressure regulator in line along with the "self" venting cap are not performing well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this video! It help me diagnose why my outboard would not stay running without pumping the primer bulb. I disconnected the hose from the carb, and was getting no fuel when the motor turns over. Ordering a new pump, as I cannot get the old one apart due to a rusty (and now stripped) screw.

Man, i was just in a salmon derby and first day it my 8hp was doing this... Second day we had to hit the tank primer every 15 seconds... I taking the fuel line off tonight and seeing if I have the same issue, I had a feeling it was the fuel pump causing a problem... Thanks for the video

I'm going to check mine out now cause it idles for a while then dies. Worked fine last time I had the boat out and I've replaced the fuel line and bulb, checked everything else that I can find so it can't hurt to check the fuel pump. Actually, I had thought about this already but honestly didn't even know what to look for. Thanks, and I subscribed.

get you some sea foam, add to the ethanol gas you are runnung. or add non ethanol and 2 0zs of sea foam to tank.also spray each cylinder,let set,then start.it will eliminate the carbon buildup on the valves. you will see a definite improvement. never use ethanol gas in an outboard or lawn mower 4 cycle engine.
I'm buying this engine in a couple of months for a 12" V hull. I was looking if I could see the idle set screw, as I expect to need to adjust it. Great video.

My 6hp Tohatsu kicker died this weekend after a few hours on the water. I was able to restart an hour later but it stalled after a minute. Happened with both the internal tank and separate fuel line. I'm assuming its the fuel pump or carb....one thing I read that I didn't see mention is that--at least on my model--the pump can only supply gas if the cylinder is in good condition, otherwise it can't draw fuel in. So I'm going to check compression along with all the lines and filters before pulling apart the fuel pump and carbs....just a thought for others, FWIW! Cheers

The line that comes off the top of the carb, some sort of vent ? what does it go to where does that line go?
I think its just a open air pressure line. Doesn't hook up to anything and plugs in to hole in bottom plastic

I had an identical problem with the same motor. Brand new. Turned out the fuel tank connection was bad. Dealer gave me a new tank and everything was fine.
What’s the bolt besides the dipstick on the carb mines leaking and I’m trying to figure out how to replace it
my 88 johnson 25 hp would start on high throttle but not idle... i tried my normal wd40 and starter fluid but no change... i watched your video and found that my tank was giving gas but not enough...Thank you sir
you might have bad seals in the carburetor
Had a similar issue with a 2016 Suzuki DF140a.
I bypassed the primer bulb and ran a straight hose to the fuel inlet, and then I finally had pressure from the fuel pump to the injectors.
I don't think those low pressure lift pumps fail as much as the bulbs do.

traced my fuel problem to the fuel cap just like yours. it won't let air in and eventually creats a vacuum
Awesome job. Crazy a small screw. Should be a name on a sticker on the block somewhere on the engine. The tech that signed off on that motor. Avoided a big repair bill.

My 2017 Tohatsu 9,8 runs fine except when I fst throttle then it bogs down and dies. I've cleaned the carb 2 times.

Pull the plugs and see they are wet. You might have bad seals in the carb bowl.
2 pumps of the primer bulb. Can you over pump the bulb & cause the carburetor to flood? I'm having a issue with mine & very hard to start. Thanks

i have an older evinrude and when I pull the choke out it want stay it slips right back is there a fix for that so it stays out on its on?
also having this issue, starts up like a beast and on my second run it wants too die, and not run I have to prime the crap out of it and then give it gas and throw it into gear, just to get going. thanks guys!

I just rebuilt my carburetor, checked the fuel lines and fuel filter. I'm also getting a spark on both plugs. Boat only runs at half power. Im going to check the fuel pump and see whats going on. Does anyone have any advice, would be appreciated? Thanks for the video.

I have the exact same problem with my 15hp 4 stroke. I just had the pump rebuilt for $260. It still did the same thing when I got it home. Does the gas tank vent need to be closed tight?
Did you pull the gas line to see if the pump is pushing gas to the carbs?

Hey man I have an 07 25hp 4 stroke took it tried to get back to the dock wouldn't start bought a new fuel line, water pump, changed oil and gear oil. Tried starting wants to start but just don't crank. Never changed the carburetor might be dirty how often does it need to be cleaned?

My mercury 4 stroke won’t start unless you cover the carb with hand idk if something is missing or what I cleaned the carb and all lines still nothing I don’t know much about motors only trucks and cars

I have a 150 mercury. Replaced primer bulb and filter. Replaced fuel pump. When you crank it no fuel is going past the pump, but if you squeeze the bulb it does. HELP!!!
Im having the same problem but have a 6 hp tohatsu sail pro. On the engine there is a type of sandwich plate so theres a carb a gasket a plastic extended peice? And another gasket. One of them was completley ripped. Could something like that also cause an issue

my 8hp 4 strock 2005 starts and runs fine but will not restart once you shut it down. even if you only run it for a few minutes any ideas
My throttle does not engage all the way when I turn the tiller handle. When I give it full throttle on the handle I go to the lever on the carb and it is only at half throttle. How do I adjust this to where I get it full throttle. The linkage I dont think is the answer because it brings my idle way high.

i gotta 20 hp 4 stroke mercury I think 2009 n recently its been giving me a hard time it only starts wen I pull the choke n then cuts out again I open the carburetor and it was fine same problem any advice?
Idk what's happening to my grandfather's boat. We were supposed to go fishing but the boat wont start bcz the was no gas. So we tried pumping it on gas was going through, we bought a $30 primer bulb to see if that helps,no. So we bought a gas a water divider still not working so idk. There is no clogs we just spent $20 for 9 gallons of gas still donr work. But I detached the hose and gas just leaked out so we kept squeezing the primer and started it, still don't run.🤦♂️😡 it's not the primer is the motor itself but its brand stankin' new!!! Just thing is when we parked it like last week it had over a quarter of a tank.
Call the dealership who sold you the motor. They should help you out if it's new

Shake a lot cause running too lean, need to drill out cap access to air fuel mixture screw 7:43. Tighten screw and back out 2 and 1/8 to 1/2 turn, then adjust idle screw.
Thats probably why it runs with choke pulled out on a warm motor should not run with choke pulled out on a warm motor unless little fuel.

I got a 9.9 hp to, its just 1 year old but if i go full speed it just go 21km/h. Normal it has to be like 30-32

60 hp mecury idles on high speed. runs at full throttle. going from idle to throttle up bogs and dies unleds keep pushing choke. carbs rebuilt last year. whats the deal

I had that same problem with the mercury 8hp
If I keep the choke on after I start the engine, my engine will shake like hell, if I put down the choke after the start it will run vvv well… so, I use the choke only for starting nd few seconds after!!!

I have a 2019 4hp Merc. At quarter throttle and up oil warning light comes on. Light goes off at idle speed. In the shop now. Anyone have any ideas???

First thing first ......take your thumbs and pull the choke out
I didn't have fuel to the pump it was the Connector where the tank hose plugs in held in by one screw pull the connector out the front of bottom cowling.

hello, it seems that your engine has same problem of mine. I have brand new 9.9 and I can hear a noise at 2700-3000 rpms. This noise has to be "centered" with throttle. I think I hear it at 8:01 when you rev engine up. Can you verify that please? I readed somewhere it does not harm engine, but -for me- it's very annoying because it's fixed at my trolling speed. this is the noise, but you have to "tune" it revving up and down. th-cam.com/video/is-oD5HiYoM/w-d-xo.html

I have a 1987 mercury that leaks fuel from behind where the carb go when I pump the primer ball. do you know what would cause that
Dan Caudle it's either the release screw that drains gas from the carb at the bottom or back of the carb, check to see if it's loose. should be the only screw around the lower area of the carb. or your carb is not on tight enough/bad gaskets and the gas is getting out that way.
I have the same problem with my 9.9 mercury. It start on throttles only and when i release the throttle engine stopped..but i tried to run the the engine while on throttle and give acceleration but engine stop...headache dude
