  • A throwback video from 2020 and the first time that Anchor Girl docked the boat all by herself. Well, with a little bit of coaching by me, but she did a great job!
Note that this was filmed aboard our prior boat (1998 Sea Ray 330 Sundancer), but we sold it in 2021 and purchased our lovely Sea Ray 370 Sundancer Sight Unseen! To see our entire journey, please check out my 'Buying A Boat - The Good, Bad & Ugly' playlist here: • Buying A Boat - Sea Ra...

The first time I ever pulled our boat into a slip, I made sure it was a day and time when there would likely be no people at the marina, so I didn't have an audience. Anchor Girl, you did a great job. Paul, thank you for posting this video. This sets a great example for other ladies at the marina.

Hopefully it can offer some inspiration for others to try docking their own boats - whether it's initiated ladies, or male pilots who find themselves a little intimidated by docking. Like the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. Or at least, a little less stressful 😉

In a real emergency, one needs only to get to shore. Beaching would do, or close enough to a dock to get ashore/help would suffice. Too many folks worry about scratching their hull or being embarrassed to mess up, but life is more important than a shiny hull ;-)

Great team work! Another stripe for Anchor Girl, and for the Captain overseeing the legendary docking. No doubt that it's brought perspective. I like how powering with the engines is for slow moving: going forward then back to neutral in short bursts as it provides time to see how the boat reacts according to the (often changing) elements, such as: wind, current, weeds, momentum and boat weight to be able to adjust calmly and seamlessly until docked. Seasoned sailor Tiny Cat didn't notice a difference it seams... What a champ and he'll notice even less when his little sailor buddy walks aboard :)

Staying calm is the paramount element, as too may folks stress out about docking - including the 'dock captains' who sometimes offer too many suggestions when approaching a new dock ;-)
As for Little Tiny's buddy, we really think he's gonna be a handful. Time will tell how he makes out on the boat this season . . .

@@BoatingWithBoogaboo I hear you and I think my favorite one from 'dock captains' is: "Shut the engines off!", and some say that while the boat isn't tied up yet. I accepted that command in the past, once, (to blend in) but then I had to rapidly start an engine (luckily it started right away) as the invisible water current caught them by surprise: I would have hit the dock at the stern (and it would have been my fault as the captain). Leaving the engines running for a few more seconds until the boat is -fully- , not tentatively, secured is the difference between stress, an injury, damage, an expense, and having a great day and being a responsible boater. Oh, I still happily listen and I appreciate valuable input, but I. Ride. My. Ship. and I have the final say. When someone insists, I politely reply that the approach of shutting down the engines early hasn't worked well for me in the past. Btw, my (silent) bow and stern thrusters are very forgiving in every sense for this. I was observing how you handled it all on your video, cheers to that. It's a balancing act between being responsible and living in harmony. Hummm... "dock captains", that could be a video on its own! Lol. As I'm writing this, my Westerbeke generator spare impeller was delivered and I got this idea and the part number, one of many, from your fun and helpful channel. Tks!!

No matter who I have on my boat I always make sure that someone onboard can basically steer the boat, call on the VHF for help and knows how to give the lat/longs just in case something happens to me. She did fine!

Great piece of advice. From personal experience, I know that there are many folks who venture out onto a lake with little to no understanding as to where they actually are if they need to call for help.

Greetings from the desert Southwest. Good on ya, Anchor Girl! While Paul is, I'm sure, a wonderful teacher, I have found TH-camrs Ask Captain Chris, and Elevate Yacht captains have very helpful advice on twin sticking and navigating during less-than-ideal weather conditions. Very informative, even for a landlubber like me. 🐱

Dual morse controller setup is almost history now'days... must admit I prefer single... and really like what they are doing with outboards now too... if you can afford it.

As I've told her from day one, if there's a serious emergency while out in the water, just get the boat as close to shore as possible - even if it means beaching it. That said, I hope she'd be a little more subtle when coming into a dock in that type of scenario 😉
