Love this version like forever. The way Mr Emanuel swings his version is like no other. When I met Doc Watson in 1978. Doc & Merle Watson (on Bass) were playing this song in a wonderful wooden chapel in DeLand Florida. The acoustics were dynamic. I was 27 & had only been playing guitar for 10 years. I was blessed to spend some time with him. What an amazing man. Truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. It was like he could look right into my inner being & knew who I was. I gained great insight into finger style guitar thru this encounter. He stayed with the events coordinator next door to where I lived. Merle had gone to bed, but Doc sat out on the screened in porch & continued to play. I fell asleep on my porch listening to that wonderful sound of his picking style. To hear his music , meet him & spend time in his presence was an uplifting spiritual experience. Thank you Mr. Emanuel for your dedication & such a fine version of this song. Vince James Ajello

One of Tommy Emanuel's best songs. Such an execution of finger picking on the beat, the off beat & back beat. Alternating base lines, harmonic cord structured notes, & single notes complementing the entire composition. A masterpiece from one of the world's greatest guitarist's.

Yes , I am familiar with the original composers of "deep River Blues. What I should have said was it was one of Tommy Emanuel's greatest interprets of the many songs he has arranged. Tks for pointing that out. I know Doc Watson's version is very well known. I got to meet Doc years ago & he played it live. Also, one of the greatest guitarists of our time.

there were 2 friends of mine doc and eric they were in a bluegrass band two weeks notice they decided that they would have a concert at kern county fairgrounds they had doc ,hot rize and newrass revival as well as some others and i sat on stage for doc watson he was really on that day . got to talk with him and he was so friendly i just couldnt get over sitting with my hero thanks to john and eric you two dont know how much joy you brought me so thank you (: (:

It's like... "Ole Man River" walked right up to us, put down a chair, and played us a song on life- You can have the deep river blues, but you can still feel good through all of it- if you just sing a great song while surviving.

See some classical players, see a whole bunch of flamenco players, see some C&W players, see some pop music players. Etc. etc. etc.
Fackt is: this guy is a marvellous and versatile skilled player who has great musical taste and knows by intuititon and hearing how to arrange his music!
I feel he is one amongst the best players in the world. And someone of whom many people learned a lot qua playing skills and how to interpret a song. Of course I can't speak for others. However speaking for myself I learned a lot by listening and watching this fantastic guitarguy!!!

Tommy’s playing and arrangement is in a different class, but Doc’s voice is hard to top. Plus Doc did it first and for some anything other than the original will never measure up.
Plus Doc did it blind, for God's sake! It blows my mind. But this is great too.
This is just as enjoyable as the iconic Doc Watson’s. The slower tempo emphasizes the blues.

Tommy I live in South Carolina USA! I have been following you and your music since I started on guitar 5 years ago! I'm self taught and I've been playing with my fingers all 5 years ! I am building up my thumb independence from my fingers and I'm getting pretty good ! It is my life's dream to play with you one day Tommy ! I love your music so much and I strive to be at least half as good as you one day ! I practice all day except for when I'm working but I play with both pick and fingers and hybrid style pickin sometimes but that seems a little more difficult but I'm learning it! You are a true inspiration to me Tommy you and Chester Atkins! And also Lester Paul was great ! But my name is Ryne Murray and I really love your tunes and I'm practicing everyday to be good as you! Listen to some Justin Johnson also. Maybe try your hand at a 3 string cigar box guitar. Justin says a 3 string will make you think about your playing in a different way and will improve your 6 string playing.
Tommy does some sort of guitar retreat/workshop-week in the US, I think about once a year. You should maybe sign up for that Ryne, and fulfill that dream.
I have to recommend studying all Mississippi John Hurt's tunes. In particular, Candyman, Avalon, Monday Morning Blues, Make Me A Pallet and watch how he plays Spike Driver Blues on the Pete Seeger Show, available here in YT. MJH's thumb is so solid. You mimic that and you will learn. I love this DRB version, some sweet notes I've been leaving out. Good Luck

This arrangement is as great as Doc Watson"s released in 1960s. I have never impressed another versions of this song. Tommy"s version is only one exception becasuse it is so musically excellent and beautiful.

Some of the best finger picking blues guitar I have heard. Such detail and accuracy and what a beautiful guitar sound. Tommy and Jason’s voices complement each other so well. A wonderful song made more powerful by its very simple and uncluttered production.
