      I agree. Robin had already been feeling it. Barry had been, too. That comment was the last straw for Barry, and he snapped. Barry later said they can disrespect them, but he won’t stand for anyone disrespecting the music.

      @@BGWhisperer the "dog" comment? Even at that point Anderson could have got through to the end of the interview. Barry was genuinely appreciative of the praise for their early music and tried to use that to get back on track, but Anderson couldn't hold back from insulting Saturday Night Fever. Too much for them.
      Thanks for the report of Barry's explanation. Excellent!

    After Maurice and Robin had passed away, Barry played at Glastonbury. An audience made up of mainly millennials totally unfamiliar with the music of the BeeGees. Yet they still knew this man had serious gravitas, and not only did they show all due respect to him, they actually really enjoyed his time on stage. It says a lot about him and them; you don’t just happen to become music royalty, it only occurs after years of hard work but above all enormous talent.

    • @skabuoy
      @skabuoy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Millennials have parents who play their music, thereby educating their offspring. Streaming services have options that show you where other people who share your musical interests, listen to. Also artists similar to the ones they listened to. I listen to music from before either one of my parents were even born. The options are plenty for everybody to discover everything, so your assumption is utter ....
      I am old enough to know some of the Bee Gees hits from when they came out (although too young to care at the time). Their hits are okay, when I hear them on the radio, I even have some on some random compilation albums, but none of their songs will make it into my top 1,000 of greatest songs ever made, and if you only go on talk shows to have the host blow smoke up your backside, you have a serious ego problem. So the misters Gibb will not be in my top 100,000 of greatest people that ever lived.
      Another interview where Barry walked out because of a question :
      Barry said something about how influential the Bee Gees had been, and all the interviewer did was ask for an explanation. To me, that was an interesting question, because I wouldn't be able to tell you ANY influence they were responsible for. I still couldn't. Disco, tight pants, hit singles, brothers making music, falsetto singing, mediocre songs, overinflated egos... They had all been around from before their career started. Well, not the disco, obviously, but that was an impressive example of them jumping the money train end reviving their career (also around from before their careers started).

    This never ceases to make me cringe.
    The really sad part is, you can see that Barry was okay with a bit of fun at the beginning... all of them were. But there's a gulf between a few cheeky jokes and just being outright insulting. Saying "You're hit writers... well, we're one letter short" was over the line, and you can see Barry visibly offended there. If Clive was a decent interviewer he could have read the guest and humorously apologized, then dialed it back... but he just keeps pushing. As someone else said, the "You'll always be tossers to me" (which was just nasty) comment is where you really feel the energy shift to a bad place.
    I've done a bunch of celebrity interviews and I've got great material out of the guests by making them so comfortable they just get into an amazing chat and give you gold. I've never offended or gone for the "cheap shot" to be funny. It's unnecessary and unprofessional.

    I get this was a show where you get roasted and humiliated in front of people, but this was definitely a step to far. You don’t make fun of peoples personal history, and achievements they’ve made in life that makes someone feel proud. The Bee Gees were gentlemen, always polite and had manners to everyone they ever met, they were great men who deserved respect.
    Another thing about them, they all stood up for each other no matter what. Even though Maurice wasn’t as offended as Barry and Robin was, he still wasn’t gonna sit there and talk to someone who just offended his brothers and made them leave, he was gonna support them instead. Maurice was even polite to Clive when he was leaving. He was no doubt the best Bee Gee.

    • @AlbatrossRevenue
      @AlbatrossRevenue ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I disagree that it was a step too far. Especially the joke that made them leave. The song name was "Don't Forget to Remember" and he cracks that he forgot it. It's not even an insult, just a little "dad joke" on the title.
      The only thing that might have gone too far was when he joked that he thinks of them as tossers, but since they said it first I think it was both acceptable and predictable the way he said it. And if they took offense at him saying he personally enjoyed their earlier stuff but not really the later stuff, then that's just sensitive egos because every musician has heard that.

      I think it was really clever. Him and his brothers were there to be interviewed. So how can the interview carry on if they're not all there anymore? He could've impersonated his brothers but he's not a good impersonator. :)@@bunniemunch123

      Yet Clive's broadcasting career continues in 2023. Barry Gibb is forever one third of a family troupe, whose solo records bombed for decades.

    Clive actually says as Barry's leaving, "I've never had someone walk off before". Why did he say that - did he think they'd go "oh, alright then, we'll sit back down"? If Clive never had walk offs before that's likely not because people hadn't wanted to.
