Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Federal is making 7 PRC in terminal ascent and it is hitting the 3000 fps mark. Great video. Thank you.
I used federal on my Muflan ram hunt. It’s a hell of a round. Very consistent.
I think hornady should put the correct speed on the box if they are having powder problems or whatever, don't put 3000 on the box .be honest.
Every manufacturer has inflated speeds…
@@DocHudson420 maybe so,but two wrongs doesn't make it right
I've had alot of issues with there ammo. There handgun ammo I've had issues such as faulty primers. Rifle chronograph showing less then listed velocity.
It all depends on where they tested it, the temp that day all of it dude
Getting 3000 fpswith my 26 inch barell and can 175 x
Hello Ron. The three access cheek piece is adjusted by pulling out the cheek riser completely. Then using the allen key loosening the two carbon fiber stays and adjusting the cheek riser laterally. Hope that helps. Also I highly recommend switching out the bottom metal and magazine to the Hawking Precision “Hunter” DBM. That will give you the flush mag you prefer.
Also new 3rd magazine available for short action at least, I'm not sure if it available in standard long action though
Ron I had to smile when you said the word "Wundhammer grip"😊. It brought me back in the day! I was a sniper in a SOG group in the late 1980's through the mid 1990's, what a great era for rifles! Savage still had a custom shop then (late 80's), and I i had Bell and Carlson send them an adjustable 😮stock similar to the one in this video with a "Wundhammer" pustol grip. Two model 112 BV (benchrest/varmint) barrelled actions with heavy profile 26" threaded barrel in .223 and .308. SOOO sweet and accurate! The .223 printed cloverleaf
3/16" groups with Hornady hand loads and was my urban rifle for things like taking out a street light prior an entry team going in. The .308 was a true 1/2" rifle all day long. Loved those rifles! My son still has the .223 which I was allowed to keep😁. Keep up the good work Ron 🙏
* I'm with you Ron, I don't like extended magazines on a hunting rifle.
I bought a Bergara Crest carbon 7mm prc and it shoots .25 all day. I bought 2 3 round AIC mags, but I agree that metal mags are not for hunting and carbon or plastic flush mount would be best. So far, most manufacturers aren't making those for this type of rifles unfortunately. Hopefully in time the new mags will become available.
Well it just took me 4 years for the 6.5 prc version of this rifle to find. Will be here next week. Now they finally released this one....
4 years? where in the world were you looking? under a rock? behind a tree? There's literally dozens of them on Gunbroker. Prices are fine and its super easy. Next time try the world wide web, its pretty easy to navigate.
I have the 6 Creedmoor version with 20” carbon fiber barrel with a VX5 3-15 HTMR. Trigger adjustment to 2.5lbs. Sub MOA so far out to 500yds.
Perfect setup for me
Very nice!!! I’m glad they’ve chosen to bring in a little bigger “guns” to the Springfield waypoint line up…
Regarding the cheek riser, I really appreciate the adjustable knobs, and specifically purchased my MDT XRS chassis for that reason. If you ever need to remove your bolt in field (to check for a barrel obstruction, or to field clean it), the fact that you can do it on the fly without digging around for an allen key is a huge plus.
Another Great Video Ron 💯 , Thanks for Sharing 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Great video. I bought a Springfield 2020 and once I had the rifle torqued into the stock ……what it liked, it’s a real shooter.
Those were some nice group, well done Ron!
Good video! Thank you for the review.
Incredible review Ron ! I’m picking up mine in 6.5prc in a week or so. Super excited for it.
Definitely has my favorite muzzle brake style.
Great rifles. Love my 6.5 PRC Waypoint
Me too!
I would love to have one in that set up. But I have paid less for vehicles before
Ron, you should try the Sako 90. It's a really nice hunting rifle, and beats this thing everyday. Better quality too. They have upgraded and fixed everything that was "wrong" about the 85.
So true but it’s a lot more money but is a whole lot nicer rifle and much more accurate just like all my Sako’s are🙌
They don't have 7prc yet do they?
No 6.5 or 7mm PRC in the SAKO 90
I have a Springfield Redline 308win & it shoots great too.
Hey Rob, hawking precision sells a flush fit magazine that will fit the 2020 waypoint that would cure many of your woes! 😁 love your videos.
Keep Up the Good Work !
I wish that Springfield 2020 was in the better cartridge 6.8 Western
If they did I’d have one tomorrow
Yah the 6.8 western is pretty darn cool :)
Nobody wants a 6.8
@@jamessammann9183 I do..
On regards to copper bullets being lighter so that they will properly stabilize is only half the reason they're lighter. They need a certain amount velocity to adequately expand. Ammo companies can't be offering 190 or 200 grain copper ammo even if they stabilize because some knucklehead will shoot a deer at 450 yards and complain about the ammo because it was traveling way too slow at that point. Keep copper lighter to keep velocities up.
You are right that the effective range of a well designed lead core bullet can be longer than for a monolithic one, but that is mainly due to BC. The main reason for the weight difference, as Ron stated, is bullet density. Lead is about 27% more dense than copper. The 160 CX is physically larger than the Hornady 175 or 180 grain lead core bullets and eats up powder volume in the case. The 160 CX has the same muzzle velocity as the 175 ELD-X, largely for that reason. The 160 copper bullet can be about the same size as a 195 grain lead-core bullet and requires the same barrel twist to stabilize. The density difference is also why the BCs of the copper alloy bullets are lower than comparable weight lead core. The copper bullets are physically larger and density is important for BC.
The velocity needed to expand is something they can control in the design. There are even subsonic copper monolithic bullets. For examples of supersonic monolithic bullets with lower opening speeds, the Barnes LRX and Cavity Back .277" open down to 1600 fps. That is lower than for Hornady's lead cored SST bullets.
A lot of the features on this rifle are on my Tikka , not the carbon wrap barrel. The bolt release looks like a dead copy and with a 20" barrel it is a nail driver, I don't mind the box mag myself , providing its a double stack .
Get the Tikka it shoots better with factory loads then any other brand except custom builds and even better when you hand load it, I know because I am a 60+ year rifle collector hunter and reloader and the Tikka is the Best Buy for its price range 🙌
Roll up a vinyl length to hold the rifle and barrel from stirring up dust with the muzzle brake.
Or just dump the radial brake.
I like the waypoint, but 2 lugs and, 90 degree bolt handle, not a fan.
I think Springfield may have a hit on their hands with that beauty!
Good shooting ron been wanting this gun for 2 years in 7prc but dont like that loud aics mag
For hunting I think I would look for a 3 round AICS pattern magazine. Should be flush fit or really close.
Hey ron has the recoil compared to the 7mm? Thanks
Did you see any accuracy issues switching between copper and lead bullets like you have in the past in switching around between the two types and cleaning?
Good rifle in an excellent long range hunting cartridge!
Ron I’m surprised you don’t hold the front after your own test several months ago shows it is more accurate when you do.
If I had my choice I would use a flush mount mag on my 300 Tikka. But where I live, and hunt, we have a lot of critters that would just as soon eat you if nothing else. So I use an extended mag that holds five shots, just a little reassurance when you wish you had an extra bullet in the mag. I don't mind the extended mag on my Tikka, it doesn't rattle. Cheers
Nice gun, haven't seen it in 7PRC yet.
Federal makes ammo with the Hornady ELDX bullet and Terminal Ascent. Hornady CX bullets are not pure copper like Barnes. It's a copper alloy with zinc. Not sure if Weatherby is making 7PRC ammo yet but I think Norma will be in the near future
If my rifle / cartridge combo will put all the bullets in the same hole consistently, then the rest of it is my fault. Either the wind got me or I flinched. Half MOA at 100 yards and a complete miss on a deer at 300 yards-- don't blame the hardware. I think you got a keeper!
I like 3030 308 my brother likes 306 I’m looking at 3540 something larger ❤
The Waypoint is definitely a nice looking rifle but for what it costs and still weighing in at 9.6lbs, I'd rather look towards a carbon stocked Weatherby Vanguard. Still, the Waypoint is surely a nice option.
I have one in 6.5 Cm i love the rife only problem is shooting with that muzzle break about blows your eardrums out it's extremely loud on the ears
This is the one I’ve been waiting for!
Metal, surrounded by an air gap and then a sleeve? Sounds exactly like a thermos flask. They claim it helps keep the barrel cool… my guess is only on the outside.
The thermos would be vacuum sealed though which is important for it to work right.
I agree with your thought process though, generally an air gap is used for insulation unless it is vented somehow.
You said .25 inch group & then you switched to .75 group guarantee. What is it?
My Browning 7mm PRC will not shoot the all Hornady copper inside 3 inches, but the Hornady match is easily inside 1/2".
Great rifle , great round , HOWEVER , do we really need new calibers ? I'll stick with my old junk...7mm mag , 30-06 , .270 win. Yall know what I'm talking about...just some old junk. Great video Ron as always.
One riot, one Ranger. One rifle, one .30-06.
You’ll find that rifles groups will tighten up , after 40 rounds or so through the tube 👍
I do like that style of stock on this Springfield 2020 Ron, but I wonder, is this rifle built in USA or elsewhere, if so where?
hows the recoil? looks like pretty mild for 7mm
I was going to get one but no one wanted to buy it for me.
Be nice to know what powder you can’t get to get what velocity they advertise?
I don’t mind the magazine protruding a little bit. They actually did pretty decent with it. The part that I don’t like is it sounds like it’s made out of recycled Pop cans +sloppy fit doesn’t seem like a great magazine set up for such a nice gun🇺🇸👍
Yeah i like it maybe in short action loose the rail. Shorter barrel. Try get weight down to 7 or 8. Very nice gun tho
I wonder who makes the stock
People keep talking about the magazines rattling, but they don't rattle whatsoever when there's actually rounds in them. That's how pretty much every rifle is....
7prc is amazing only.thing better 28 nosler just hard to.find ammo.
Been looking at this rifle for a while. Sadly in Australia, they are a 5K rifle.
We always get stiffed mate cheers Yogi 🤙✌️
Sako better & cheaper here anyway.
is everything at springfield still Made out of country?
Just a guess Ron, but it is a Springfield Armory waypoint. I would guess the SA on the brake would stand for Springfield Armory.
Nice shooting! I have one in 6.5 PRC and it shoots the exact same. These rifles are great.
I was planning on buying this until it took Springfield so long to introduce it. I ended up getting the Bergara squared crest carbon in 7 PRC. I believe that cartridge is going to be around a very long time.
I have 24 lbs of RL26 and a pallet of vintage penthouse mags.....
That’s exactly how I’d build a rifle.. the cheek rest goes side to side .. 3 axis .
I personally don't like rifle stocks made from synthetic material ...give me a walnut stock with hand checkering any day ...!
Hey Ron what is a good beginner rifle in 300 win mag
Bergara in 300PRC
One with a suppressor or a big brake and doubled up ear pro. The Lord's caliber though not the biggest or fastest on the blue planet, still has a well earned reputation for helping experienced shooters develop a pesky flinch. As does just about anything that recoils harder than 308. The other option is to make it heavy like 14-15 lbs to tame the recoil.
In other words I wouldn't hand a win mag to a beginning shooter. I've had trouble with new shooters coming in great with there first 3 shots and then rapidly degenerating into puddles when learning on ab cheap light plastic stocked 06' or winmag. I vastly prefer teaching fundamentals on .223, then recoil management on .308 before moving to anything bigger.
If you can't practice how you need to perform, you won't perform. I know very few shooters who can actually put 20rds down range in a practice session with an unbraked winmag without fundamentals deteriorating into straight up bad form.
Also there's not a lot that needs bullet holes that a .308 isn't capable of handling.
@8:01 “integral recoil lug. We saw that.”?
Nice rifle! Nice shooting! What I don't understand is... Why would a rifleman at the bench not be using a spotting scope? Just enjoy the walk? 😉
Hawkins Precision hunter mags fit flush in that rifle.
At this point, if it's not a fine-grained walnut, just can't warm up to all these new rifles. I'd sure like to see metal magazines too. I must be from the pre64 school.
Federal is making 7 prc and they must be getting the "good" powder because their speeds are up there.
Federal and alliant are part of the same conglomerate so yes
good luck on your velocity numbers with the 7 prc and please youse the right length of barrel size for the 7 prc
Imagine saying this to RS
Federals 7PRC ammo is hitting roughly box velocities with the proper barrel length. 2950-3000 is very doable with the right powder.
@@TheCodyOI've gotten to the point that I don't even correct the ignorance anymore.
If all the data and facts in the world can't correct their thinking, nothing I say is going to.
Does anyone else notice the paint pattern move at 4:45 🤯 Pretty freaky looking. Probably the camera doing that?
Heck with the gun what about that Leupold scope. Sorry! I try to buy Leupold when i can afford one. It's a spectacular looking gun. I'm one of those 10% ers ( that's lefty not rich)
hard to argue with those results
I am very disappointed that Hornady would make ammo without the powder they prefer. I’d rather they didn’t make it. Be patient and do it correctly the first time. American quality should come first.
So well beyond the the working joe price range LMAO
How do you even choose with so many calibers now?! lol. Like seriously! Everyone has a favorite and an opinion.
7 prc price of ammunition way to high and inflation of the numbers doesn't help
extended magazine like that are a 100% deal breaker for me on a hunting rifle. you just cant carry it comfortably with that. flush or hinged floor plate for me
I have a mossberg patriot 7prc, im curious to see you test budget rifles in 7prc compared to that upper end one you have there.
I was considering buying this rifle but decided it was to heavy.
That toolless adjustment would sure be nice if you drop you rifle in the mud and need to clean that bore in the field.
Tape.
They should drop the 2020 from the name.
Nice shotnʼ, Ron.

Handloads only
VERY NICE INDEED
Why would anyone reload if you can get 1/2 in moa. Because if rarely happens
Bullet selection, velocity is always better handloaded, consistency. My hand loads are measured 3 times. If I did my part, the ammo will shoot consistent over and over and over. 3 shot groups from box ammo doesn't prove much.

Because that box of ammo cost 70$ for 20 rounds
Great review! I guess I'm too old, but I don't understsnd trying to meld hunting & precision rifle stocks. It doesn't seem ethical or logical.
It's unethical to have a more stable and comfortable stock?
Oh….ok…I think I understand. It’s unethical because it makes it easier to kill animals? Thank you for your input. How long have you been an anti-hunter?
Low IQ take
The 6.5 Creedmoor channel is again trying to drum up rifle sales by endorsing some hot new caliber. Is this new caliber better that the incredible 6.5 Creedmoor with its incredible BC? Probably not. There is not better cartridge than the Ron Spomer 6.5 Creedmoor. Nothing....
However, Ron's womanbjist bought him this super sexy 7x57 so maybe that is now the best new, bad BC forgiven, hot new old stock cartridge to the world according to Ron?
Hopefully someone comes out with a 6.57 STW soon because I'm buying one! 🥳
Watching Fudds have to handle new stuff is funny.
I bet I could sell a MODERN WHEEL, and somebody would say this is the best version of the wheel ever! (Tell me, does this stabilize shooting through brush better, or not effected by wind)? NO, Then how is it better than my 1903 Springfield? Does it shoot better than my 1969 30-06 BAR?
Yeah its way better than both of those . Stop living in vintage land and just accept that innovation in modern firearm and cartridge design is better.
It absolutely might perform better than either of those two rifles that you have. It may only be better by a margin, but rifle cartridges have developed for over 100 years since both of those two you mentioned came out. It goes without saying that they’re going to be better.
I don't buy 90 degree bolt handle lift guns
Same! I don’t care how nice the rifle is there’s no excuse to not have a
So you spend loads of money, get a heavy rattley. rifle with a magazine that sticks out where you put your hand and that will definitely put your rounds into a pie plate at hunting distances... whoopee !
Yeh the ratly mag put me off immediately. Such a shame as it ticks a lot of boxs. I’ll stick to my tikka i think
To bad the magazine isn't detachable and can be swapped out for a flush mount one. It would be nice to say if Hawkings precision developed one already for the short action so the long action shouldn't take long to get to market. Hell, it would be a miracle if springfield themselves even offed a three round straight feed the minimizes the mag protrusion.
@@carlmeaux3518ya especially since we only have metal magazines available and always carry our magazines empty so they rattle, and it's illegal to fill those cups on the stock with qd mounts attached to a sling so you can carry it on your shoulder.
It,s not $1,000 more gun than my bergara wilderness ridge
I love what u do ron but u sound like a grumpy old man about ur mag. The acis feeds super, get a plastic 3rd. It won't rattle and b almost flush. How many rounds do u need to hunt w any way
That rifle doesn’t really offer me anything. I have pre 64 model 70’s that are much lighter (8 pounds all up), and they shoot better too. Where’s the balance point in that rifle? Right at the big steel magazine? Not my idea of an ideal hunting rifle. Thanks for the video though.
Then you better hang on to your m70s. My m70 shot great but these new rifles with modern materials and better ergonomics are much more comfortable to shoot when you fire more than 5 rounds a year.
I had a waypoint. It shot 2moa, the extractor broke within the first 40 rounds and the bolt would seize at the rear… warranty service did not fix the rifle after 7 weeks. I will NEVER recommend this rifle to anyone.
Oh please really 7 mm mag is great these guys are trying to sell you stuff
7 Rem Mag is great but with factory 1:10 twist barrels, it cannot stabilize the long high B.C. bullets. SAMMI chamber specs are tighter leading to more inherent accuracy. Plus, lots of hand loaders don’t like reloading belted cartridges like the 7 Rem Mag. 🤷♂️
I really don't like the trend of manufacturer's painting their carbon fiber. The hunter had to do that as a necessity because carbon fiber shines when it's wet. Instead of manufacturer's actually improving the product, they blotch some paint on it for you. It just comes across as lazy.
It looks cool
I think this style of painting is called ‘camouflage’. I believe it’s meant to help disguise the hunter from prey. I could be wrong, but I believe they make clothing with similar patterns and attributes
Algorithm
7PRC is it the new 7mmMag? I don’t trust new caliber rifles. On a whim the rounds disappear from the shelves. And for how long? And I’ve already spent how much? Mine is now more of a decoration than a hunting rifle. Can’t even sell it. Maybe my great grandchildren when it gets old enough to be of some value again. But again as a wall decoration.
It’s not a new caliber it’s a new cartridge, it’s the same caliber as the 7 rem mag.
Stick with 7 mm mag
