He also pulls a very classic grooming predator move that older people use on teenagers where they basically praise them and tell them things like they're smarter or more mature or whatever than everyone else their age. They try to make their target think that they're equals at a time when you're really still a kid but you desperately want to be taken more seriously and start thinking of yourself as a young adult.
And I definitely think that girl David slapped was his initial target, she's the only person in the crowd we see who speak up at all, even her mother doesn't. Which makes me think he was grooming her already and making her think she's special to him in some way. But when he saw Ellie he changed his mind and her privileged position was taken away.

You're right, but that's extra disturbing, because that's the kind of thing any good teacher/mentor/relative might say to a bullied or precocious kid, hoping to empower them and make them feel more able to stand up to others. The idea of people using encouraging words like that as a tool for evil is just so awful. Then you remember David *was a teacher* and it gets even *more* appalling. Unlike with a lot of people, the apocalypse didn't make him evil--he already was.
Think you're right about the girl, too--the way she yelled for Ellie to die sounded almost like she was jealous of her. Maybe he'd already been hurting her, if only psychologically.

6:08 David is served a heaping plate for his portion of the “venison” meal while we can’t even see most people’s portions at the bottom of their bowls. So he absolutely uses food as an intentional way too control people. David most likely has been severely abusive and violent before, and then blamed the victims just as he does with Hannah.

I found the finale with David (ie Ellie axing the ever living hell out of him) to be incredibly cathartic.
David is an incredibly evil character for many reasons, but for whatever reason the food thing really stuck with me. Comparing the resort to Jackson, you can see the antithesis to what Joel said in his (granted oversimplified) explanation of the “before times” - some people didn’t want anyone to own anything and some people wanted to have it all. David, in his selfish quest for power and control, would rather live a miserable, eked out existence where he is on top and can do whatever he wants. Whatever abilities he may or may not have, he clearly did not have any business leading a self-sustaining community. I was really struck by the fact that the community had next to nothing stored to survive the winter (although I wasn’t clear how long they’d been there), and how David probably didn’t think it was in his best interest to offer them anything beyond near starvation. I’ve seen other folks suggest that David was lying about being a teacher, but I think your explanation is more likely. Having a “violent heart” does not necessarily mean acting out in a blatant way - most abusers act quietly and carefully, and that’s why they are not caught. If anything, him having a position of power over children makes perfect sense for his character’s motivations.

Yes, David Koresh was the leader of the Branch Davidians (an aberrant offshoot of the Seventh-day Adventist church) who gathered in Waco, Texas. He and his followers were besieged by the FBI because of accusations that he was marrying underage girls. The siege ended when his lieutenant, Stephen Schneider, killed Koresh and the compound was burned. It's inconclusive whether the Branch Davidians deliberately set the fire or whether the FBI accidentally did so. As you can see, Koresh's situation was considerably more complicated than David's was in The Last of Us.

It was an insanely hard fumbling of the bag to make this character who had such promise and seeming manipulative charm & charisma suddenly out of nowhere switch from intelligent and subtlt menacing to "Let me just suddenly r@p3 this girl IN A BURNING BUILDING right next to the cleaver I saw her reach for and kicked her to stop her THAT IS STILL IN ARMS REACH"
It's supposed to be this emotional climax and big moment for Ellie's "character" but as soon as he wasn't pulling down the curtain to put out the fire quickly all immersion for me was gone, and that sudden nonsense r@p3 decision was just the icing on the cake. You wanna explore that dark subject matter? Perfect, do it in ANY OTHER SCENE because here it just pulls you out and destroys any suspension of disbelief with how nonsensical it is.
It was the television equivalent of the edgy kid in high school shouting out "R@P3" or the N word "randomly" to try and be shocking on purpose thinking he was funny but just being cringe.

As much as I enjoy the show, want thing I hate about shows and movies is they always use the Christian characters as crazy/psycho people. Never see other beliefs within the bad character. Always regarding cults. With this, wouldn't viewers judge God and actual Christians as bad when these characters are the opposite of what a real believer is suppose to be. Speaks volumes, alright.
