- Jimmy Kimmel speaks with ET at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles Gala. The talk show host opens up about his son, Billy, who was born with a heart defect and has undergone multiple heart surgeries. Jimmy says Billy, who celebrated his fifth birthday in April, is 'doing great.'

My son was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, a Ventricular Septal Defect and Pulmonary Stenosis. He has had four open heart surgeries and many cardiac catheterizations. He is now 28, works full time, and is doing very well. Being a parent of a child with congenital heart defects is scary and stressful. I certainly understand what the Kimmel family goes through. He should be fine. A family member recently married a man who was born with heart disease, requiring operations. At 30, he's healthy and successful and they now have a beautiful healthy little boy of their own.

That’s such wonderful news! Our daughter was born with 2 holes in her heart, one healed itself and she had open heart surgery at 11. They had discovered pulmonary stenosis in between her right lung and heart. She is 41 now and has not had anymore problems with her heart. We owe it all our Lord and Father! Praise Him.
No. You do not owe it all to "your lord". You owe everything to the wonderful doctors and nurses who trained and studied for many years to learn how to fix your daughter's heart, did so and then took care of her while she recovered. Give credit where credit is due.

A school mate at grammar school had a heart disease since birth too. She was amongst the best in Sports but had to be careful. There are good heart specialists nowadays. May God protect the Little One! He's cute!

Glad yall covered this but this isn't exactly an exclusive. If you watch his show you'd know he gives updates a lot about how Billy is doing. Even shows clips of them doing stuff for the show or stories about yheir home life. He's such a cute and funny kid, truly is blessed to have made it through his surgeries.

I am starting to believe, that comedians have extreme leadership skills.
For 10 I did echocardiograms, as Jimmy explained as ultrasounds on hearts, from newborns to the eldery in Philadelphia and the at Ohio state. I was one of the first few people in the U.S. to learn this procedure. I also had been in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab before that. I loved my job and had a special affinity for the kids. I would guess that my love and care for the " wee ones "
probably stemmed from the fact that I had been a child patient @ the Boston Children's Hospital from the ages of 1-18 years old, having contracted Polio as a 9 month old. I had 15 orthopedic surgeries in that time and years of physical therapy to learn how to walk. I know the fear of being left alone ( in the dark ages parents 1950-1966 had to follow visiting hours like everyone else ), the strangers working on and around you, the pain, and just wishing you could go home and be normal. I always had those things in mind whenever I worked with the kids: a soft touch, a calm and caring voice, that the ultrasound doesn't hurt, and making sure that they were comfortable and if old enough could see the pictures as I did the test. And then most of all I would try to allay any of the fears of the parents, as much as I was allowed to as a nurse. Now @ 73 I look back at those years as some of the most significant that I have spent in my life. I am so glad Jimmy that your son is doing so well. I would never have guessed that he and you guys had gone through anything like this. The way you talk about him, he sounds like every hyper and crazy little boy that I have known. I should know since I had 2 sons! The doctor told my parents, and he was world renowned, that
" if you treat a child as handicapped ( that's what they called you back then), then the child will grow up to be handicapped. " From what I see of your family, you are treating your son just perfectly! 🤗💜🙏

Yeah when he said screwy he meant personality wise because Billy is actually a funny little boy who keeps them on their toes. He shows clips and tells stories about this all the time on his show. He wasn't referring to his heart condition. He actually lights up everytime he tells the audience about something Billy did at home that made them laugh or entertained them.

Also, kids who are in hospital a lot spend a lot of time round adults and also get more attention than normal. It must have some kind of psychological effect on them, even if they can't verbalise it.
