Midwest Industries has a front sight rail that clamshells on and is rock solid. running it for years, gets the light a little farther forward and no shift in zero. 33$ on some sites google the model number MCTAR-01G2
The Magpul handguards are a really solid choice as well for those looking to replace the rounded handguards but not go nuts on it. I bought a set for my 20' and they're really sturdy
I had a bayonet mount flashlight mount that worked pretty good and it was cheap. Centered the light under the barrel which kept it out of my field of vision. Great video as always.
I found that I like the "clamp onto the frontsight" rails for my light+slim plastic handguard combo, and I just velcro the pressure switch onto the handguard
I bought my Stag model 1L as I am a southpaw many years ago. I don't have as many rounds through it like you do, but I'm glad that they do honor their guarantee about replacement parts.
I purchased an Elzetta FSB light mount probably close to 15 years ago. It mounts in minutes and is extremely durable. I’ve ran it on my bushmaster xm15 A2 carbine.
My first light was a 500 lumen harbor freight light for $7 that i zip-tied to cutout in the cheese grater handguard. I have better now but i still have it and it can compete with $100 setups.
Thanks Reid. Love new stuff. Love old stuff. Know what works best for you. Leave the bells and whistles behind, you really don't need them. If a product has been improved and works better for you, be open minded. But don't scoff at older stuff... its been dealing death since before you started life. Respect it. Have a basic knowledge of how to use it all, but train mostly with your setup.
Midway has a pic rail that mounts to the FSP. Not too expensive. A viable option, although not as good as the IWC part. Absolutely agree that keeping it simple and basic, and working on skills is the most important thing. If someone absolutely has to customize their rifle, in order to make it 'theirs', then there's a huge market of drop in parts that will satisfy most people, and not deviate from what Reid is holding in his hands in the video. Engineers designed the rifles this way for reasons. Most come stock looking exactly like what he's showing in the videos. But cool guy parts can be had for little money, and don't require a whole lot to install them if you absolutely need to have something else.
Thank you Reid. I still remember your lecture on the different phases of government, and we are 100% at bondage. Thank you for doing the right thing no matter what!
Yep.....RIP......Most of their products were good quality.....I've had 2 of IWC mounts snap right off my rail at the same place....Tried contacting them and found out about the owner passing......I found a company in PA. Shaffer Machining. They make some of the best light mounts, red dot mounts, etc. on the market in my opinion.....Arisaka is another great company for all sorts of mounting options.....
@@PsychedelicWinter110 They were an excellent design....yes......I'll have to disagree on quality of the aluminum they used......Maybe I just got a bad couple of thorn tail light mounts for my AK.....I had 2 of them snap at the threads in the same spot.....They were able to replace the first and when the 2nd snapped that's when I found out about the owner passing......I do want to say they sent me a new thorn tail for free.....When 2 break on me I'll stop using that product until QC does it's job......RIP to the owner I'm sure he would have done the QC check..!!!!!!!
I opted for the traditional handguard as well. Heat was the driving factor. My choice for mounting accessories was a pic rail handguard length ( mounted at the bottom) as i wanted to be able to mount a light, same setup you showed just left side as I'm a lefty, and a bipod or vertical handle. I used Amazon products with stainless hardware from my local ACE. A little blue loctide and voila, everything works very well. I can reach the light switch, and yes on / off only is my preference too (blinking and flashing blablabla just makes me dizzy lol), when the handle is installed. Good video, thanks for sharing. If i may, can you consider publishing a presentation about shooting techniques free standing and how to accomplish best results? Thank you.👍
I already have the IWC mount on a DSA AR that I installed years ago. I love it. I had a second one on backorder for the past six months and cancelled that in favor of Reid's 1913 rail plus MagPul mount solution. Important: if you go this route, make sure you buy 15mm Long M5 T-nuts and black 1/2" flathead 10/32 machine screws as well! The T-nuts that come with the rail segments are way too small to cross the entire vent hole and engage the handguard. If you are using the quick release mount that comes with the Surefire Scout, the MagPul rings and ring base should be removed. If you decide to use the MagPul rings, the Surefire quick release mount must be removed. Either choice is valid to your personal needs and preference.
Love the old round handguards and have mounted pic rails on them for a light or a stubby forward grip. You forgot to mention putting the heat shields back on after mounting the pic rail.
It's so funny you came out with this video today, I was shooting my rifle with the full length free floating handgaurd then I shot my wife's with the traditional Magpul type 2 pc handgaurd and I was amazed at the weight difference
I always switch out my round hand guards that use an A-pillar gasblock with a Midwest Industries mlok or an extended magpul mlok handguard.... I've pretty much switched over to low profile gas blocks anyway for longer mlok handguards to eliminate as much barrel shadow possible, especially when shooting suppressed. LWRC currently make my favorite DI & piston operated rifles.
I rock an old bushmaster m4a1 old a1 carry handle with small handgaurds I would trust it any time I use one of the front sight rails so nothing on the handgaurd it has never let me down the rifle
After dealing with a number of tape switches that stopped working, I switched to the more simplistic light setup like you’re running. I bought a couple of those Magpuls when they first came out and used them on issue carbines with quad rails. They worked great. Still using one minus the rings on a personal with a free float quad to mount a Scout Light 600L that I wouldn’t have otherwise bought except that the price was too right. Activating the Scout with the butt cap switch. The Magpul mount pits the light at the right height and sufficiently far enough foreword to establish a good support hand position. I’d never realized the hand guards were double heat shielded. After going with free float quads, I was a bit irritated to find that the hand guard get pretty hot closer to the gas block making gloves a necessity for anything more than a few rounds. Having watched your previous video, I now wonder how much of a difference the free float really makes when trying to make small, tight groups at 100 from a supported position.
I have done exactly like you show for the second option.. Most of my rifles have the standard round handguard and I actually prefer the smaller diameter but I put a short piece of magpul rail at the 10 o-clock position and use a 1-in scope ring to clamp a flashlight onto that rail which puts it right in front of my left thumb. Works great and was inexpensive.
When Reid put out his last light video, I bought several Surefire G2X lights, and they were inexpensive and awesome. I also bought a couple Magpul rail mounts, and they are one of the best inexpensive mounting options available.
On a non-free-floated barrel, the shooter has more effect on barrel harmonics than anything else. There are picatinny rail-mounts for the front-sight-post that work well. If you want to shoot good groups with your rifle, brace off the front of the magazine-well without touching the fore-end on anything at all. What you brace against has a lot to do with it too, the more rigid the better; i.e. something immoveable like concrete or steel imbedded in the ground.
Excellent presentation and way to get some torches ready for those carbines. I sure would like to get an upper with those type of hamdguards and front sight tower. Sadly, I swayed from the Old Ways.
The bayonet lug should be the go to spot for light mounting of you have an A2 front sight post. It's ambidextrous, packs away in a case flat and the closer you can get the light to the end of the barrel the less muzzle shadow you'll cast.
If you're really in a bind for a light on your round hand guards and can't find a mount in stock, you can go the very early GWOT/OIF route and 100mph tape a dual D-cell MagLite to the bottom of your hand guards😉
I have a Surefire I found in the mud in a bar ditch mounted in a front sight mount made by Elzetta. It covers the bayonet lug, but I don’t own a bayonet.
IWC makes a great mount. I used one for a long time, and later modified it to fit up under my custom modified PEQ2/PAQ4 barrel mount so I could use a Surefire M640 Vampire with my Vital 2 laser. No rails + pencil barrel gets me down to about 7 pounds 2 ounces with a loaded mag, and thats with a red dot, light, laser, sling and foregrip on an 11.5.
CAA has an FSB/FSP model FSM15P picatinny mount. Make sure your handguards will clear the flashlight. The MOE SL front lip will not allowed all of them only the ones that are high up in the FSB. There are like three companies with the same concept some of them are made of aluminum.

KZ extended front sight mount with a TLR long gun kit. Puts the light at the 12 o’clock position right in front of the front sight. Ranger band a pressure switch to the top of the handguard. Perfect

FAB defense makes one that mounts to the bayonet lug. Maybe not the best for long strings of fire, and a little odd of a position, but it's an option.

Ppl act like if you don’t have the newest handguard you may as well just not have a rifle 😂😂 good stuff Reid
After having all the tactical crap, I find the rifle I always grab is my classic midlength with irons and the normal round handgaurds.
I’ve always been fond of the Front sight pic rail attachment
I believe cloud defensive makes light mounts for stream light and sure fire and tape strips.
Those vent holes are there for a reason. When you start pluging them up heat retention/buildup can be an issue. Otherwise a good idea.
FAB Defense makes a polymer picatinny rail for the AR handguard also, $15. I've used mine for nearly 10 years.
I had a bayonet mount flashlight mount that worked pretty good and it was cheap. Centered the light under the barrel which kept it out of my field of vision. Great video as always.
