There's nowhere to hide on an AFL ground. It's total commitment at every contest. It's the bravery and the willingness to put your body on the line for your coach,, teammates, supporters and the club that is the attraction. Amazing ball skills,speed and fitness / endurance is the icing on the cake. You need to be tough as nails and have no fear to play AFL.

Guys you need to watch a game rather than highlights. Does anyone know where to watch some past games?
As for AFL it's easy. It's just like NFL.
Except the field is at least twice as wide and twice as long.
... and you have both your offensive and defensive teams on the field at once (18x2teams=36ppl)
... and there is no line of scrimmage so you can be where ever you like.
... and every man is expected to be a quarterback, a running tackle, a blocker, a wide receiver, and most importantly, a kicker ... with stamina.
No stoppages as such. The referees may award free kicks they see fit, other than that it's twenty minutes a quarter with time added for stoppages (anytime in that twenty minutes the ball isn't moving basically).
The game starts with a tip off like basketball.
If you have possession of the ball you can handball it (punch it out of your own hand) to another player or you can kick it to another player. If it leaves your possession any other way it is deemed 'incorrect disposal' and the opposition team get a free kick at the spot it happened.
If someone has the ball you can tackle them anywhere below the shoulder and above the knee. No tripping, no head high tackles.
If you tackle someone that has the ball and they can't get rid of the ball or dispose of it correctly (kick or handball) the tackler gets a free kick.
If someone on your team has the ball and someone on the opposition tries to tackle them you can bump them away from your team mate. This is called shepherding.
If you are within 5m(?) of the ball pushing and shoving is expected but 'off the ball' technically there should be no contact between players. If there is and the umpire sees it, it may be a free kick.
If you catch the ball after it has been kicked (more than 15m) without anyone else touching it you can claim a mark, which means you get a free kick.
Easy.

The 1989 grand final is a good start....... Brereton played the whole game, about 2 hours of play, with brocken ribs and a split kidney.
Diper played the last 60 to 70 minutes with brocken ribs and a punctured lung, then collapsed in pain when he heard the final siren sound ( games end ).
Both teams had about 6 players each spend the night in hospital.
Good players have no fear during a final and refuse to come off unless carried off. lol

A great newer video is A Beginner’s Guide to Australian Football | AFL Explained. It was put up by the AFL approx 4-5 months ago. It explains the game really well.
The most spectacular aspects of the game are the marks and the goals. There are two clips currently on You Tube called: "50 best Marks" and "50 Best Goals". You should give both of those a run on your channel. Both are awesome.

@@thehairysnot8069 Gaelic football is very similar to Aussie rules, that’s why there’s Irish players in AFL and they have a hybrid International Rules game every few years.
GAA are all amateurs, play infront of 82000 people in the final, watched round the world.
Lots of people enjoy indigenous sports because their different and highlights different cultures.

most of the moments were either goals at the end to seal comebacks, or moments from close grand final matches (our version of superbowl)

Serious is an understatement. We are heading into preseason and love watching my guys, the Magpies, kick arse all over the field. I have had the honour of walking out onto the MCG.... It's a hallowed place. The home of AFL, the home of cricket in Australia, and where the 1956 Olympics were held. There is so much history inside that stadium, and when it is full, the game is tight, the feeling is indescribable, and there are no words that do justice to it.

Also you can't throw the ball it's not considered a legal disposal.
Only way to score a "goal" is to kick it through the 2 big sticks without anyone else touching it. Can be kicked on full or kicked along ground ( rolling bounce) through.

I remember watching Aussie Rules about 30 years ago every Sunday morning on Channel 4 in the UK. The only teams I can remember from back then are Essendon and Collingwood. It was always a sport that I would have loved to have tried. It seemed to have everything you could want from a sport!
@rikmoran....Hello, yes either Sunday morning or evening there used to be a 1 hour highlights show presented by Gary Davey, Essendon & Hawthorn were big rivals so there were a lot of scraps especially Dermot Brereton can't forget his blond hair when there was trouble on the pitch he wasn't far away Collingwood & Carlton were the main teams in the 70s often making the Grand Final

Ch 4 was the home of "minority" sports back then - AFL, Gaelic hurling, Sumo, Kabbadi, American Football etc. I managed to get tickets to go to the Oval cricket ground in London and watch an Aussie Rules game in 1986? But the icing on the cake was Sumo at the London Albert Hall in 1991 that was epic. First ever official basho outside Japan in 1500 yrs. The atmos was electric.

It was an exhibition game between North Melbourne and ..... Carlton (I believe) . Anyway ....... I'm pretty sure it has a mention on youtube. If you search "AFL battle of Britain" you should find it.

Nick Davis kicked four goals in the final quarter (20 mins each quarter) in the 2005 semi final against Geelong (pronounced "Jelong"). What you see here is his fourth goal with seconds to go until the final siren which got the Sydney Swans (red and white) into the Grand Final (the equivalent of the Superbowl) the following week.

1 Goal is 6 Points, (Ball goes between the 2 big stcks)
1 Behind is 1 Point (Ball goes between Shorter outside stick and the tall one)
Score is the total points accrued by each team expressed as goals, points, total so 10, 6, 66 or 10 Goals (60 points) 6 Behinds (6 Points) Total 66 Points
A Goal can omly be kicked and not be touched by anybody before it crosses the boundary line.
Those last 3 goals were what you'd call "buzzer beaters". The Sydney v Geelong one, I was there, the entire stadium was vibrating big time (notice the camera shaking at one point!). Sydney was getting well beaten at 3/4 time, but Nich Davis kicked 4 goals in the last quarter to put them into the Preliminary Final (the equivalent of your "Championship Playoff". Spoiler: Sydney won that, then won the Grand Final (= Superbowl) also, for the first time in 72 years!
I remember watching it live too! in the last 2minutes, there was no fullbacks, mids or rovers. EVERYONE was up front in the forward goal section, just TRYING to get that last goal to tip the scales, while Geelong furiously defended it. As soon as anyone got the ball, they were pounced on, couldn't even pass it off. As soon as one guy got it he managed to get a kick off 90deg straight to center goal! What a rush!
Sydney used to be South Melbourne. Which was my team. Broke all our hearts when they moved to Sydney a little better now that they reinstated our song. The mighty bloods.
And don’t forget, those were the only goals of the final quarter, and it was pissing down rain all match, unbelievable
If my team doesn't wind up in the finals, which admittedly hasn't happened for a little while, I love it when a non-vic team wins the grand final. Even thinking about those occasions puts a smile on my dial.
The finals for 2023 started here on Sept 7th. 92,636 people attended the first final and 92,026 attended the second. At the end of both games there was a two kick difference in the final score! Brilliant! Thanks for the video as I hadn't seen this one before.
The ovalish ball does tumble wildly, but the players train and play with it so much, they get a really good intuitive grip on how to strike it with foot or fist to make it go where they want, and how to catch a ball bouncing off wildly on the run.
we played a friendly (mostly) game with some Aussies, these guys are another breed, not only did they beat us on the pitch, but drank us under the table after.

I try to catch as many ARF games live but they are shown so late at night.... but I caught this past year's Grand Final (I think it started at 1 AM) and it was an amazing game. It took a few games to catch onto the rules, but after that the game, teams and players are pure energy and entertainment. Total must watch if able. Thanks for the great reaction!

Well done guys. For context you need to pay attention to the scores and time left, and to how important the game was. Finals, and the chance to play in the grand Final, can be won or lost with seconds remaining. The season starts March 16, (AU time), so get ready. Keep up the good work. Subbed in hope of more AFL.
Unfortunately several of these, particularly the Nick Davis winning goal from the semi final and Zaharakis's game winner on ANZAC day were from back when TEN had the coverage and didn't show the countdown clock, so no way of knowing how long to go. I see 29/30 minutes on the clock and instantly know there might only be seconds left before the siren, but not everyone is going to know that. I must say though I do wish they didn't have the countdown clock on TV and just had the count up clock like you have at the ground, it's so much more exciting not knowing when the siren is going to go. 60 seconds to go, down by 7 points and ball at the other end of the ground, you pretty much know that baring a miracle the game is over, but same situation with 29 minutes on the clock there could be 1, 2 or even 3 minutes to go and anything can happen. But I'm pretty sure I am in a minority.

You can actually play AFL in the USA as it was introduced in 1996 in Wisconsin when the USAFL was formed and today their are over 50 teams playing in over a dozen states with both women and men’s leagues. There is also a world championship competition every 4 years held in Australia with teams from the US and Europe but not Australia because here we play it professionally.
You can play Aussie Rules Football. AFL only applies to the top tier.
I played in a club league in the states. Needless to say, it’s extremely violent and I don’t know if I would encourage anyone to play unless you had great health insurance.

Kiwi bomber fan here, I began watching the game on TV when I was living in Sydney. Just watched a video on youtube celebrating the 25th anniversary of the USAFL. Thats right, there yanks playing Aussie Rules, the best football code on the planet no question. On the 25th of Feb the Essendon Bombers play a preseason practice match agaist the Gold Coast Suns, it can't come round quick enough. i friggin love footy!
Dustin fletcher who kicked the goal from long range at the start of the video, has a son kicking as a punter for one of the us colledges. Will probably play nfl later. He's broken a lot of the punting record for his colledge. And that first moment with Davis kicking a goal with a few seconds left was one of 4 he kicked that quarter to put them into a grand final. They had played horrible all night and came back and stole the game of Geelong in a very low scoring game was a great game to watch.

Put simply, that man, Nick Davis, kicked 4 goals (I think in a row) in the last quarter of the game to bring his team from losing by 23 to winning by
3 points (a few behinds were scored) in the semi final of the season. The loser of this game was eliminated and the winner went on to the preliminary finals (the winner of which goes into the grand final, that being the Australian equivlent to the superbowl) so the win meant far more as their entire season was on the line. The Sydney Swans (Davis' team) went on to win both the preliminary final and the grand final becoming the premiership champions (overall winners) of the 2005 season

Nope, tell your woke-arse story walking. No one ever heard of Marngrook until about 15 years ago. As far as anyone knows it was created by Harrison and Wills. If the indigenous played some game with a stuffed possum skin and kicked it around it doesn't mean they invented AFL. Its like saying a caveman sharpening a rock for a spearhead was the inspiration for a set of knives that a chef uses. Wills went to the Rugby school in England and would have seen the codes they were playing, the Irish had played a similar game to Gaelic football for as long as they can remember so probably a bit of influence there as well as many of them were transported here. First nation people my arse.

This is a great video that showcases the game , but if you are looking for a good explanation of the rules there is a new video out called A beginners guide to AFL. Other things to focus on would be the highlights of Eddi Betts, Cyril Rioli , Lance franklin .
That snap by the Sydney Swans player , Red and White team, was a semi final match against my team Geelong , the blue and white hoops . Sydney were behind Geelong the whole game till that last kick with 5 seconds to go . That snap got Sydney into the grand final and Geelong were out.
Just as a contrast to how the game is played now you should look for a you tube video titled along the lines of 'top 10 AFL enforcers'. The last twenty-twenty five years has see the game cleaned up and sanitized. Some of the top players were also enforcers. An example is Tony Lockett. They even made a song about him
Its been cleaned up, which is great. I love Plugger, but no need for it in the game anymore. Its tough enough without being taken out behind play, like in the "good ole days"
Barry Hall was mad. These guys were basically the goons or enforcers of hockey. I believe in earlier years some guys played just to injure other players, they were basically street fighters playing in an organized street fight.

I think that the great moments in Aussie Rules football are made even more memorable by the commentators at the games. Some of the greatest commentary lines at these games have gone down in footy folklore and add that extra bit of excitement to the game. Retired great commentator Dennis Commetti said once that he could go to a shopping mall or some public place and fans would approach him and recite the last 5 minutes of his commentary of the 1992 Grand Final. 😀
Great reaction! As an Australian who's grown up watching AFL it all makes sense to me... But I once made a pretty intense effort to learn American Football and I can understand how it feels checking out a new sport! I didn't have the option of checking out TH-cam vids though... it was just watch full games and slowly put the rules together as I went... and with the whole team swapping in and out depending on who was in attack/defence... plus the guy coming on to punt... confusion was a common occurrence!
That last passage of play. No 11 of the Essendon team (red and black) kicking the goal just before the siren to win the game.. That was this young players first ever goal in AFL. This game is the ANZAC day clash. And it is huge on the AFL calendar. Imagine your first goal of one of the biggest games of the season being the goal that wins it for your team. And he still describes it as his best moment in footy.

good work guys! its 6 points if you kick it off the boot through the big posts, on the full or off the bounce doesnt matter, just has to come off the boot. If the ball is touched by another player before it crosses the goal line, goes between the big post and the little post, or hits the big post, its 1 point. if the ball hits the little post its out of bounds.
We grow up with that ball in our hands, just like kids do with a basketball. We can do amazing things with it, we know how it rolls, how it bends in the air, how to hold it, bounce it & how to kick it.

Love your commentary. I'm Australian and was in a pizza restaurant in Santa Rosa, CA and a game of Aussie rules was on the big screen. A customer on the next table who picked up on my accent, asked 'and the parents let their kids play that game' referring to the courage that it takes. Yep I replied, the other woosey parents only allow their kids to play soccer. AFL when it comes to skill, athleticism, stamina and courage is the real deal.
We gave my father a “round tuit” it was made of ceramic and a hole in it to hang on the wall and was inscribed with the words “ this is a round tuit”. The instructions said this was the article that made everything possible because most blokes needed to get a “round tuit “ to complete a job!
through the middle of the goal posts in 6 points, between the tall post and small post is 1 point, also hitting the goal posts (taller posts) is one point, and hitting the point posts (small posts) is a free kick for the other team

Very simple context. This goal was the winning goal of the 2009 grand final (Australias equivlent to the superbowl) in which both teams had been extremely evenly matched
America actually has its own ALF men and women's competition which includes teams from Canada, it's the USAFL. It's a national competition and been going now for well over a decade and its growing fast. I think it's actually now the largest AFL competition in the world and at least one American women has been selected to play in the Australian women's competition. National teams have also toured Australia.

5:00 - that line marks 50 meters (not yards!) from the goal posts. Most players can reliably kick a goal from 40-50 meters, but some have scored from 60-70 meters away.
5:50 - Shane Crawford retired in 2008. He was one of those players who just kept going, and he'd frequently run his opponents ragged; he'd typically have 2 or 3 opponents on him during a match. The statisticians had a look at what he was doing, and they worked out that Shane would run the equivalent of a half-marathon (often more) each match.

The “moments” are usually about very close games; and the final kick by the attacking player scores enough points to win the game and promote his team either into the “finals” (your playoffs), or, deeper into the playoffs, or, win the “grand final” (= to your Super Bowl).
Not sure if anyone else has informed you guys of this but if the ball goes through the 2 big goal posts it is worth 6 points (a goal) or if it goes through either side it is worth 1 point otherwise known as a behind! I don't follow sports at all, but as an Australian of course I know the rules to Footy! One of the oldest codified sports in the world, in my opinion one of the (at least potentially) most exciting sports to watch, at home but ESPECIALLY live, the atmosphere of the crowd is such an integral part of the experience.
I'd love to see more Aussie Rules content, lads. I'm as new to it as you are. Started watching a bit in early lockdown as it was about the only sport still being played on TV. Now I've got the bug.
The moments that make history - Most of these moments are times where the game is very close to finishing and the loosing team "snags" a goal in the dying moments, usually during a final match where the loosing team will be out of the competition for the rest of the season, or the Grand Final - the championship match. Great video boys if you want to see more look up some "run down tackles". Its a great element of our game where an individual can show their strength and speed. For context if you get tackled while holding the ball we call it "holding the ball" and the player caught holding the ball will be penalised with a free kick. Run down tackles can save games just as much as a clutch goal in the dying moments can.
As each clip comes on - you need to take a quick glance at the score, (how close it is - under 6 points is only "a kick the difference"....), the quarter, and how much time's left!
"He's got the game on his boot." One of the more quaint descriptions for those last second come from behind kicks to win it.
You also need to see the guys run full speed down the field bouncing the ball as they go. Unreal stuff.

To give you some context, the red lines infront of goals are 50 metres, around 55 yards out. Some of those kicks were around 75 yards long. Through the large "sticks' in the centre is 6 points if the ball is kicked through and not touched. If touched, or the ball travels through a centre and end post, 1 point is awarded.

It is so ingrained into our psyche that we have regular crowds at training over summer. About 6 weeks from the trials before the season starts in March. Going down on Friday to watch my team and then report back to the football forum on an AFL website that has been going for 24 years.

context for that last goal, its the 2009 ANZAC day game (basically Australian version of veterans day and probably the 2nd biggest game of the year) Essendon and Collingwood are historic rivals, Essendon was down like 4-5 goals I think with 5-10 minutes left in the game, then the comeback starts, in the last 5 minutes the rain that was predicted all day finally starts pouring down. dying minutes of the game, Essendon kick point, (this is where the clip starts) Collingwood have possession and are 1 point up they just need to maintain the ball and they win, Essendon force a turn over in their forward half ends up in Zaharakis hands (first year player has played like 2 games) he kicks it whilst getting tackled and its a goal Essendon are in front with mere seconds left of the clock
The moments are quite simply, those times when the game is on a knifes edge, when the teams are tied & they have seconds to make a difference. The last kick, often after the siren. If a player takes a mark before the siren, he gets the chance to kick for goal, this can often give them the win if they kick the goal.

We all love those heart stopping ends to games, or the moments as they refer to them in the video. Devastating when it’s your team that loses the game in the last seconds of a game though.
When the siren sounds the play in that quarter stops, or in the final quarter the game stops. Thus, for example, the ball is in the air and the receiving player has not yet caught it the play is finished for that quarter. But it the receiving player has caught the ball from a legal kick just before the siren he can play on after the siren. If the plays moves off the mark before kicking the ball the play is immediately ended, if the player handballs the ball away the play is also immediately ended, thus the player's only realistic option is to kick the ball for a goal or behind. Some incredible kicks have occured after the final siren as it is now all or nothing, like 90 plus metre kicks to score a goal or kicking a goal from the sideline by kicking the ball from the weaker foot to allow it to curl in the direction to allow it to get between the main posts.
If you check out some of the legends of the game's highlights you will definitely see how great the game is. Eddie Betts, Buddy Franklin, Nick Natinui and many more. A lot of the goals that look like flukes are actually just expert precision. You see this when you see these guys do it over and over. If you're a sports fan AFL is a lot of fun to watch
The Nick Davis goal. Red and white. They were down 4 goals going into the final quarter. Nick kicked 4 goals in the finals quarter. 3 seconds after that goal was scored, the final siren went and the Swans won. Back then no time clock count down to know when game was gonna finish

Just to give an idea on the size of some of those guys, Brad Ottens who is in the white guernsey with the navy blue horizontal hoops taking a high mark over a player near the beginning of the video is 6'8" and 250lbs and Matthew Richardson in the black and yellow is nearly 6'7' and played at around 230lbs, It's amazing that some of those guys are so athletic at that size.

We are going into the last 2 rounds of the regular season before the finals (playoffs?). It is one of the closest season I think most can remember were there are probably 12 teams still in a chance of making the 8, who go on to play finals. It could come down to the final game before it is set.

I'm Australian and in Melbourne and I love our footy. It's the oldest footy in the world. Before it was AFL it was VFL and was only played by teams here in Victoria. Aussie rules was founded in the 1880s so anything else like soccer, NFL NRL etc

Nick Davis kicked four goals in the final quarter (20 mins each quarter) in the 2005 semi final against Geelong (pronounced "Jelong"). What you see here is his fourth goal with seconds to go until the final siren which got the Sydney Swans (red and white) into the Grand Final (the equivalent of the Superbowl) the following week.

To put the moments in history in context notice the top left it says 4Q and has a time there as well most of them is the end of the match with like 10s left in the final quarter. Then the score just above it showing the game was decided by the play. And if you catch a kick oh the full you can kick the ball after the buzzer so some of them happened after the game was over.
That red 50 metre line they're kicking from beyond is 165 feet away from goal. Goals have been kicked from over 200 feet away and still be high enough to sail over the arms of a 6'8" guy who's jumping trying to reach it.
The kicking is phenomenal.
This is why you see Aussie Rules players end up being kickers in the NFL after retiring from Aussie Rules.
I took my kids to their first AFL game today. They absolutely loved it, despite our team losing narrowly by 3 points. AFL is an exciting spectator sport because it is fast paced, high scoring, hard hitting and requires a lot of different skills.
2023 AFL season starts beginning of April. If the game is close and there is a mark just prior to the siren for the end of the game, they still get to take the kick for a goal after the siren and it can change the result as a goal gets 6 points.

A kick between the two central big posts is 6 points - if it hits the big posts one point - if it’s touched before it goes thru one point
If it goes between a big post and the small post it’s called a behind and worth one point - so a score 10:5:total 65 ( 10 goals x 6 plus 5 behinds x 1 point = 65)

In Aussie rules, a goal is worth six points and what is called a behind is worth one point. A goal is between the Centre 2 posts and a behind is between one of the Centre posts and the outside goal posts.

Having played Aussie rules most of my life, it is a great game to play. It's hard and can one off sore some games. It is not only skilled but also tactical. A kick through the middle sticks is worth 6 of the ones through the outside sticks. Eg 10 goals 5 behinds = 65 points
You should watch the story of Mason Cox. He is an American playing AFL footy for Collingwood Magpies. Its called Mason Cox - Dont Believe in Never.
Between the big sticks is a goal, 6 points, between big and little sticks is 1 point. If you hit the big stick, with ball, it's 1 point but if you hit the little stick it's "Out on the full" and free kick to opposition
The moments are about the the last few seconds in a game and one team is trying to defend their lead while the other has to score a goal (6pts) to take the lead and most likely the win as there won't be time left to score again. A coupe of those moments were a shot on goal to win the game. So they marked the ball or receive a free kick the siren goes off ending the game but the player is in range to win the game so can try score a goal.
He cannot pass it as the game would end. Bit like a kicker coming on in NFL to win the game with 3 seconds left.
A lot of the guys you saw in the video are now retired, and one of the best athletes at the bouncing goal from pocket did not seem to be covered the great Peter Daicos, affectionately known as the Macedonian Marvel for his talent as a footballer.

6 pts for kicking the ball through middle posts, 1 point if it hits the big posts. Then 1 point for getting a kicked ball the outside posts . But the end posts mean its out of play. Doesnt matter how far out >70 metres is mad or close. But the scorecard will 1-1-7 points
I feel like unless you had the context for a lot of these moments you won't realise how great they are, especially the kicks after the siren. Every Aussie kid has lined up with a footy in hand pretending to be kicking for goal after the siren has gone!!
The Essendon vs Collingwood game is one the bigger games over the years that happens on ANZAC Day here it a big game that honor those who fought in all wars over the years. Essendon hasn't won for a couple years and it was a win that the people though we wouldn't win because we wasn't haven't a great year that year. Which when we won I think we helped another team move up the ladder to get into the grand final of that year with that win.
Afl is older than NFL Soccer and basketball.
