@@jpeopolis it was the first codified football to exist as a way to keep cricketers fit in the winter. It was loosely based off of uncodified rugby in the 1800s and may have drew some inspiration from soccer and Aboriginal ball games.
Australian footballers are considered the premier athletes on the world stage, they run an average of 15 to 17 km a game, and it has been played since the 1850’s It is played in several other countries on obviously a smaller scale and is gaining momentum in the USA. It also has the 4th largest average attendance in the world, with some games reaching 90.000 spectators.

Yes, the game is played on a cricket field. Aussie Rules developed in the 1850s to keep cricketers fit during winter. It's technically the oldest **codified** football code in the world. It developed independently from Gaelic footy, but it does have convergent similarities.
Yes, a mark is essentially catching a kicked ball. If the ball has travelled a minimum of 15m, and no one else has touched it, the umpire awards a free kick to the catcher from the spot the catch was taken. The marks in this vid are the most spectacular kind, thus known as "speccies", or also "hangers" or "screamers".

Rugby League was formed as a breakaway from Rugby Union in England in 1895, this also happened in Australia and NZ in 1907

Hey guys, that was a great reaction video of the sport I've followed for nearly 50 years. it's so great to see people from other countries discovering it like this. It really is a fast paced, high scoring game, full of spectacular highlights.
Just a couple of things you might be interested to know, it is played on a cricket field because the game was developed to keep the Melbourne cricket players fit over the winter months. The only real ties to rugby are the oval shaped ball and that Tom Wills, the guy that come up with the rules, played rugby, at Rugby School. He was also a brilliant Cricketer and when he returned to Melbourne, he captained the Victorian Cricket side against the other colonies. When he decided the cricket players needed to keep fit over winter and that another ball sport would be good for that, he didn't want them to play Rugby as they'd be more prone to career ending injuries, so he and others drew up the rules of a whole new game.
Rumour has it (and I believe it) that he based the game on a game he used to play with the Aboriginal kids that he played with when he was young, a game called Marngrook, a ball game, using a possum skin stuffed with hay. Some people dispute this, but if you do any research on Marngrook and consider that Tom Wills used to play it, it's obvious where his inspiration come from. Tom Wills' story is fascinating, there's so much more to his story than I've said here, check out this link....

There's been two players switching from Rugby league to Aussie rules. But their body shapes are actually quite different. Aussies rules requires a lot more running, while rugby players will have bigger upper bodies. Also the skills involved are very different, kicking in Aussie rules is the main way to pass the ball so all players have to be a good kick, while for league only one person would often kick the ball.
There is no cross-over between Rugby players and AFL players - some have tried, but none succeeded.
Because the rugby don't have ball skills and aussie rules boys don't have the same bulk to take the hits. More athletic
Depends what rugby you talk about, players coming from NRL haven't been successful but Mike Pyke who went to Sydney after playing rugby internationally ended up playing 100+ games and winning a premiership

There are teams in England and Europe in USA as well playing this great Australian game. The game was started 1859
There are very few AFL/rugby crossover players - it happens like once a decade. AFL to NFL is more common, usually as special team players
The most common crossover of players from another sport is probably basketball. The AFL has had a lot of success transitioning basketball players into quality AFL players, the vertical leaping and athleticism is a great base to create an AFL player from. A lot of quality AFL players also have junior basketball roots too before specialising in AFL👍🏼
I would argue Gaelic footballers have been more successful. They have had more players and they have achieved more - including Jim Stynes, who won the Brownlow.

Sure (at least professionally; I had an Irish mate who used to play it socially in Australia), what I was referring to was the fact there have been some very successful recruits to AFL from Gaelic football, not that they are playing Gaelic football in Australia.

There have been a couple of cross overs from rugby...all failed, but a Gaelic footballer called Jim Stynes successfully did it and became one of the games greatest ever. " What is AFL, Aussie rules explained" is a fairly good rules and overview vid. cheers.

Aussie rules really getting out there since covid, I like it. Also, the best of the AFL players play against the Irish, in Celtic football, I think its like once every 2 years, and when it's played in Australia they change the rules to be closer to afl, and we smash the irish, but when they go to Ireland to play, the rules kinda go back to more Celtic footy, and the Irish win
Yes, it's very similar to Gaelic, in fact there are a few Irish players that have moved to Australia to play such as Zach Tuhoy and Mark O'Connor who both play for Geelong cats.
There are a lot of these guys that get scholarships in American college football to be punters. In America we had more AFL than soccer 20-30 years ago. And it’s played on a cricket field.
Looked it up since 2013. College Punters who have won the Ray Guy award, 6 have come from Australia. Pro Punters in America make about 5 times more than AFL players. And if they just play college football they can get a full ride in their education. Plus being a Punter if you are really good they have longer career than in the AFL. High School and College rules are different than Pros. Lineman can leave the line of scrimmage before the punt where as Pros can’t leave till the ball is punted. That’s why you don’t see Pro Punters with the run/punt option that you see in the lower levels.

That game was televised from the old South Melbourne ground. I remember watching it. I cannot recall who Collingwood was playing on the day. Tschuess aus Australien.
Sort of like Gaelic, they used to play a modified game as internationals, but there was an indigenous game, 'Marngrook', (?), that also had a big influence.
Fun fact... the guy who got knocked out and looked like he died( haha) came back on later in the game .. tough hombre.

AFL is played on an oval-shaped field with scoring posts at each end.
At each end of the oval are four white goal posts. ...
The main purpose of the game is to kick or hand pass the ball to your team mates in forward positions who then kick it through the goal posts.
The game is won by the team who has the highest score at the final siren.
A game lasts for 80 minutes and is divided into four 20 minute quarters.
There are 18 players per team. And they run around a LOT.
Players are split into three categories: forwards (the ones who score the goals), backs (they try and stop the goals), and midfielders (the ones who do a lot the running).
AFL is kinda fun I watch occasionally and I live in America

It's actually not easy to switch codes although there have been 2 Rugby League players who tried switching to the AFL.

Karmichael was playing Rugby Union for Waratahs (Super Rugby Competition) but they didn't offer him a new contract so this year.
Israel Folau is currently playing for Rugby League for Catalans Dragans (France) Super League.

It counts as a mark when the ball is caught on the full from a kick that is at least 15 metres in distance. Doesn’t matter if it is taken on top of another person or if your just standing still.
Like a few people have said, check out the rules, and some highlights clips (best marks, best goals), and you might be ready for the upcoming season.
The women’s league (AFLW) has just started this weekend, and the men’s league (AFL) starts in March.

We do play on cricket pitches. The game was invented to keep cricketers fit in the off season.
We play at the MCG and SCG plus others. Melbourne Cricket Ground etc.

This would be an example of the bias in umpires when umpires let one team bareak rules and theother not ie West coast won because of bad umpiring.
AFL is the oldest coded game in the world. It is based on an Indigenous game that has been played for thousands of years. Designed to keep cricket players fit in the winter so it is played on a cricket pitch. AFL players have to be very fit and can run up to 20km (12.5miles) in one game.
Great reaction. Interesting point you guys made about the crossover of players between Rugby League and AFL, but contrary to what you might think, those crossovers are almost non existent at a professional level. It’s maybe happened with one or two players in history. If a crossover were to happen it would be more likely to occur at junior levels of sport.

Goal equals 6 points ( middle posts) behind 1 point ( left and right posts), can be kicked and bounce or soccered through still 6 points ( must come from below the knee).
Occasionally there is cross over not often. Some run up to 20km a game, every game is pretty much like this and more. 100,000+ MCG

If you want to see Australian respect watch ANZAC Day service before the AFL ANZAC Day match between Essendon and Collingwood. 94,000+ crowd and complete silence for a few minutes. Should bring tears to everyones eyes
You also have to remember these guys are huge blokes most average over six foot tall. The tallest player at the moment is Mason Cox an American import is 6ft 10in tall.

Only a couple of players have gone from rugby league to AFL. There's a lot more endurance required for AFL, so the league players had to trim down a bit as they are more concerntrated on strength

You can’t use your hands to push people out of marking (aerial) contests so the ability to “specky” and that means jumping straight up and planting your knee on the person in front of yours shoulders to balance/spring up and claim the mark is a skill utilised by many players but not all either. Great and unique part of the game

The biggest successful crossover for AFL players would be the NFL as kickers . Being that young kids in Aussie are kicking footballs as soon as they can walk . NFL kickers have adopted the AFL "drop punt" a top over bottom kick , that is a lot more accurate and a predicted bounce . Because a NFL kicker is not a physical position , players make the move at the end of there peaks . Aussies will also try out if they have a perfected long kick , but cant make the highest levels , this also occurs in American University's , when Aussies want to gain acceptance into them
Player physiques are very different from Rugby League and AFL. AFL players tend to be slightly slimmer to take on the demands of endurance running where as the League players are bulkier and conditioned to take on the demands of direct hit up contact.

Aussie rules football pre-dates both rugby and basketball.
You are allowed to "bump" in AFL but, if you choose to "bump" and make contact with the opposing players head you will be fined and or suspended.
Most of those "bumps" the players were suspended.
Yes you are allowed to jump on the backs or shoulders of other players when contesting a "mark".
We have a saying when playing AFL: "some days your the bug, some days your the windshield."
Have a look at some older highlights, over the past couple of decades the sport has become super athletic and tactical by comparison to the 60s-80s, when there was a lot more set position play as opposed to players running all over the field all the time, and a lot more violence too.

With your question at the end about whether or not the hits are illegal, yes some of them are illegal, some of them are perfectly legal. If you hit your opponent in the front of their torso, you can bump into them at a huge amount of speed and force. But you can never hit above the shoulder line which is reportable. And not in the back which is deemed a push in the back and a free kick will be awarded against you (the exception to that rule is when you are realistically attempting a high flying mark, roughly speaking)

The hit at 4.01, you will see the "hit" player get up and play on. How many times would a soccer player roll around playing dead after a similar hit?? AFL players don't lie down as the play continues and to do that it leave your team a man short.

But if you want to really enjoy a game watch "The Full Replay of the 2018 Grand Final", it was the best Grand Final in recent years.
An AFL player is the fittest of all footballers as they run approx.14km a game. EPL players averages 10 to 11 km a game, but don't have to tackle, be tackled, bump, fight for the ball, mark, have players stand on their backs, etc. ENJOY!!

7:56 not that common! It happens a few times a year I'd say so it happens relatively often but it's always really cool to see it.
Rugby players fail to play AFL, however our guys can play rugby. The MCG, Melbourne cricket ground hosts regular games through the season and also the finals. The grand final like America’s Super Bowl gets 100,000 spectators. Aussie rules is the fourth biggest crowd drawing ball sport in the world. The game is 120 minutes long, (divided into 4 quarters with breaks) 30 minutes longer than a soccer game. These guys are the fittest athletes in the world, as they are running all over that massive ground at full speed while getting bumped and flattened, and during a game can run as much as 18 km per game flat out. You have to bounce the ball periodically not running more than 16 yards before bouncing it.
When you kick it on the full or along the ground through those two big posts, it’s called a goal and worth six points. If you hit the post or kick it between the outer posts it’s only worth one point. When you take a mark, you are allowed to keep running and play on or you can stop and take a set unimpeded kick. Most of those big hits you saw don’t happen much these days, as the sport has been cleaned up, and players guilty of those head bumps will be suspended for up to 8 weeks.
