Someone else commented this DLC doesn't add to the story or Jack's character. I see it more as this is what Eveline, a biohazard shaped like a human girl attempting to imitate what families do, thinks a birthday is. The bullet confetti, the music, the decor, the fun hats - all a hallucination. But the hunger and the food are real enough (and all the food is garbage).
Jack just wanted a bed and breakfast. There were board games on the table in the third level. I bet birthdays pre-Eveline were really something. :(

I gotta say, I am EXTREMELY impressed with Resident Evil 7. The main game and the DLC we've seen so far has blown me away. Zoe's not that great of a character, and Daughters could have been a little more drawn out (instead of Evie just insta-converting the family), but overall this game is amazing and I cannot wait for more content. 21 and Jack's 55th's Birthday are probably some of the best DLC content (or just content in general) I've ever seen for a game.
Zoe would be a much better character with better voice acting.

Yeah. Well the typeface doesn't have numerals so when I typed out "5" they were just "V" and I felt like since it already looked weird it didn't matter if it was right or not lol

You pointed out a small mistake, why the fuck "crawl into a corner and weep quietly"? Know that just because you are a fan doesn't mean that you can't point out flaws.
John, i would love to know what your thoughts are on jack as a character, even if he is very odd i feel like his design has very unique traits that make him rise above a lot of current day bad guys in horror.
Mr1worldin Jack's design is excellent at portraying himself and his past. His voice, script and voice actor all tie the character together to be memorable, creepy and heartbreaking when needed. Jack stood out to me- although I have a soft spot for Marguerite- because his voice actor *lived* the role and everything he said stuck. Being chased by Jack was the worst. It was unnerving, creepy and came with a sense of imminent failure. Then you see the real side of Jack, and even though he has hunted you as a relentless, crazed psychopath, you *feel* for him on such a deep level. His husky accent persuades you to feel welcome, his gentle expression and pained tone all make you want to save him. All from the man you sawed in half, who butchered you and hunted you like game.
I'm explaining it awful cos it's 3am but tl;dr- Jack was amazingly written and perfectly portrayed. If every character could have been on his level the game would have struck some serious chords with players.

Thanks, that's a really nice statement. Alright, now that I'm awake- let's give this a shot.
I think Marguerite appealed to me in particular because I do like the 'creepy, homicidal bug-lady controlling a huge, skittering swarm' character (Kerrigan from Starcraft, for example.)
However, I can see how others may struggle to like her, as she became the specifically 'crazed' and 'hysterical' character, who can be difficult to stomach due to elements such as screeching, a sense of 'tryharding' and common tendency to whine and complain when things don't go according to their demented plan. She also disgusted many people with her egg-sac mechanic in her boss fights, and made others uncomfortable with her elongated limbs and specifically insectoid appearance.
*Despite* this, she had an unnerving motherly vibe going on (such as during the 'escape' mini-game, where she insists on you eating her food) which unpredictably shot from 'motherly' to 'insane', making her seem like two distinct characters rolled into one. One moment, she's sweetly encouraging her bugs to pursue her target, the next, she's screaming at you to get the fuck out of her home. She sways from attempting to kill Ethan, to appearing unwell and vulnerable, to simply wanting to be alone. Whenever you saw Marguerite, you could never guess if it would be a fight, a small cutscene or a bit of story. In addition to this, the game still provided fractured insight to Marguerite and Jack's pre-Eveline marriage, with them bickering at one another and seeking a form of 'comfort' from the others' actions- 'He's not eatin' it Jack!' The choice to make Marguerite behave as someone who came across as caring and matronly, with the infection causing her to act erratically and dangerously, as well as corrupting her body into a traditional, twisted monster (as opposed to Jack's 'I look mostly normal and I'm still creepy as shit') should persuade players to feel for her. Beneath the infection, you know- as evidenced by the 'Daughters' mini-game- Marguerite is a loving person, who probably enjoys cooking for others and has a warm personality. She cares for Eveline without question, is gentle with Lucas despite his poor nature and gross habits, and speaks politely to Zoe. She doesn't demand, snap or command people- she is soft-spoken, with a comforting Southern drawl and some soup on standby, probably constantly. Despite these positive traits, she is among the first to be corrupted by Eveline, possibly due to her soft nature and subsequent mental susceptibility. Even then, fighting the infestation of a deranged, mutated little girl, Marguerite still fights her urges to aid Zoe, forcing Eveline's power away just long enough to hand her the key and beg, howl, for her to run.
Even though I fully understand why people may be put off or bothered by Marguerite- her gory physical changes, unstable screeching, raging emotional intensity- I can't see it myself, as she provides your traditional RE 'mutated human' while also being a character of many faces. Much like Jack's reveal of humanity during Ethan's capture, Marguerite still possesses some traces of being the victim. You are exposed to a generic, howling, screeching, terribly mutated monster, knowing they were once a person, *feeling* they never would have wanted what they got. 'Daughters' simply provides more reason to feel for Marguerite, as she is clearly portrayed as a gentle old soul, kind and caring, sweet and motherly.
I loved Marguerite for reasons similar to loving Jack- although Jack's voice acting and writing were superior to Marguerite's (not that I didn't like her VA, Jack's was just on another level) they were still both evidently human, and a little observation would lead a player to understand their personalities and characteristics before the corruption. Marguerite was RE7's tragic character, who took the brunt of physical mutilation (as you must always have someone who looks gross as fuck, but appears human too) and unfortunately lost a majority of her mind to it too. She's tragic, she's sad, she's entirely undeserving. Though Lucas is a horrid character, and the game never provides much in the way of Zoe, it is painfully evident Jack and Marguerite never deserved what happened to them- that is more than enough for me to love them, feel for them and sympathise with them....even when they're trying to make our lovely protagonists, yknow, die horribly.
F0xtrain Very well put, i really liked good ol' Marge too. Though, as you said, jack is too good to get second place.
I like the comedic approach in this game.
I also like the characterization of the villains which is quite different from the previous games.
Other RE villains: "You won't understand what I want to achieve" ; "...change the world." ; "...evolution." ; "Revenge." ; and other villain dialogues we used to see.

I think Lucas explains what happened to Mia in the three years, Eveline, having found a new family forgets Mia as her "mommy"and uses her to attack the Gators and anyone else because Lucas said in a note that Mia was getting too violent and crazy so he locked her in the cell to keep her out of the way (ruining his plans.)

Test area stage 2 you need to walk towards the yellow door to spawn the green monster. You can also put food into storage and just sort it out later.
Clairvoyance is great for scouting to know where items are.

First of all, thank you so much for all the great RE7 content John! I love it. I'm still playing the game, closing in on 40 hours now and I haven't even done Madhouse yet. Apart from the obvious shortcomings of the main game, the only thing that bugs me about the DLC is the fact that there is no endless survival mode, and only 1 map. What gives?
[SPOILERS FOR THE MAIN GAME]
Anyhow, I actually wanted to comment on the fact the Zoe (read with terrible accent please) is very likely to be alive if the Mia ending is what happens. Sure, Redfield radio guys are saying no survivors in the house, but it's a big effing place.. How would she have died? We just left her. Odds are she's still kicking. Wanted to throw that out there!

Are you playing with a controller? Navigating the menu with F works really well if you haven't tried. The game remembers the last item you highlighted when you open your inventory, so you can F > move > F real fast.
Watching him eat garbage and spitting it up is the funniest part about this minigame.
