OMG. You unearthed some very old memories. Such a strange sensation to remember these long-forgotten games. I think I had about 6 or 7 of these. Many, many thanks.
Cheers mate. Great memories. Came to GW in 1984 via Fighting fantasy age 12. warrior Knights, Battle cars and Rogue Trooper are personal favourites. Had chainsaw warrior too agree it was pretty crap. Re released Block/Mega mania are great.
Played Blood Royale regularly as a teenager. It was very, very, very much a weekender - start on Saturday, finish on Sunday. Some of the most incredible gaming stories of bluff and double cross.
In 1982 I walked into a friend's bedroom to be confronted by a glorious selection of Citadel skeletons - I was in! I saw Grenadier miniatures in the big model shop in Sheffield, UK (Beaties) and then braved the nerd-cave that was the Sheffield GW store (then on The Moor). I remember these games on the shelves and the plethora of TSR AD&D. I can smell the place now: carboard, metal minis and plastic dice. I was a regular from then on, but it would be a few years before I had a circle of friends to actually play with (Titanicus). Happy days. I still have 2 minis from GW from back then. My pal had Battle Cars on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum - it had the exact same box art as the board game.
@@stylemer Yeah, back then it really felt like something leftfield and even 'esoteric' (ha ha). Glad I crossed the threshold and am still hooked, all these decades later.
I sprayed some of my board games, with gloss varnish, followed by matt, or silk, depending on what finish I wanted, it protects them pretty well from wear n tear, and especially mold.
@@EsotericOrderGamers I have played the original space hulk, literally 1000s of times, so much that moving the models had worn through the cardboard tiles 🤣, so when I brought a replacement, I decided to try the varnish idea, and its been great for the last 15 years, my logic was, you varnish the models to protect them from handling, so why not the board and counters.
@EsotericOrderGamers I didn't just use wood varnish or anything like that 🤣, I brought it from an art shop, it was actually called paper varnish, I think it was made by Rowler Downey or something like that, you can still get it from art shops, I think there is now a decopage one, but I havent tried that yet, its not supposed to react with pigment in inks, or paints on artwork, or cause any curling through shrinkage, I think the newer ones even protect from UV light, so you can protect display boxes. . I would always recommend testing on an easily replacable token or something first, I sprayed one space hulk corridor that I had spares of and left it for a month, just to be sure. .
Back in 1980 I went into my local game shop with the attention to buy Valley of Four Winds but the sales assistant persuaded me to get basic D&D instead saying it has unlimited playability. I made the right choice sending my pocket money on role playing games but still wouldn't mind a time machine to go back the 1980 game shop and go on a spending spree on the old games
That sales assistant certainly gave you good advice! Nostalgia is fine and all, but VotFW certainly doesn't hold a candle to the possibilities of D&D! (I got my basic set about the same time too - still have it, though the box is almost flat these days).
Wow, that takes me back to many, many, many nights of gaming in Sydney that I vividly recall. I still have those edtions of Fury of Dracula and Dungeonquest, and of course Talisman, including all the expansions except the Dungeon (I thought a friend I'd lent it to had lost it but I recorered it only this week!). My kids love them. What about Blood Bowl, Horus Heresy and Mighty Empires? Surely they didn't come out in the 1990s? You mention playing Dracula on Halloween, I once played it with my girlfriend of the time in a campsite in a remote national park on New Year's Eve over a couple of bottles of red, while the koalas barked all around us in these giant gum trees - pretty bloody spooky... We really must play those BattleCars scenarios, if we can decode my abysmal handwriting!
Hey mate! Ready for Starfinder this evening? (A group of us have been playing a DCC Lankhmar RPG campaign for 2 1/2 years with me GMing, tonight we're starting a new campaign with me playing for the first time in decades.) Those other games you mention are all Warhammer related - perhaps another video. Lucky you didn't get attacked by vampire koalas ... the bush is a dangerous place ... Yes, I spent a lot of time doing that Battlacars remake, we'll play it again next time you're here. See you tonight on the screen!
That map is lovely. Think that's an Ian Gibson, legend. There was a fair bit of inspiration, biggest one is probably the 40k bolter which is remarkably similar in function to a lawgiver (causeless rocket propelled ammo). And as for the Arbiters LOL.
Fantastic trip down memory lane for me. I would also add to this the original Blood bowl game was in a box (first edition first print run was in a brown box and second printing in a red box) that was just like these too. Dungeonquest is my favourite...and Blockmania / Megamania / warlock of firetop mountain and Talisman next. The latest version of Dracula came with prepainted miniatures but that is out of print again. I finally got to play warrior knights earlier this year because one of my sons bought a FF copy, and it is a fantastic game..we played with 5 people. I was laughing at your comments about Chainsaw warrior..I persevered with that game too many times...and always died before defeating Darkness...funnily enough I did lend it to a friend who said he completed it on his second attempt! I will did out Rogue Trooper from the loft because I seem to remember liking it but thinking it was a bit of a grind, and I did see you have a player aid on your website. I loved the fluff for battle cars..all the more enjoyable after watching your battle of five armies and war of the ring play-throughs. Keep up the excellent work!
Blood Bowl is set in the Warhammer universe, so I suppose I can use that as an excuse for forgetting the original small box version! 🤣 We have a lot of old games in common Graham, thanks for writing!
Brilliant video. Definitely a trip down memory lane for me as I’m 56 and started gaming when I was 13. We took a trip to the original GW in London. Bought loads of minis which I still have. Mini figs, Ral Partha, Citidel. I still game with my mate from that time. Thanks for the memories.
After watching i put Chainsaw Warrior on the table. After playing two times, i revised the rules where necessary. Then i do a two player coop game rule. I think now it is the game it should be. Fast paced brutal fun for one or two players.
I had Fury of Dracula, Chaos Marauders, and Rogue Trooper- all bought for £2.50 each from Games Workshop in Harrow around 1990/91ish. Chaos Marauders is the one I played the most, and I still own that original copy to this day.
You missed some. Squelch, Oi dats my leg, Hungry Troll and the Gobbos and Troll in the Pantry, although they were if you have never seen them, best forgotten. I was working at GW at the time and had to play them with customers.
Yeah, I do know of those, but as kid-focused ones that were pretty much forgotten as soon as they were released, they didn't seem worth covering! I sympathise with you!
Great trip down memory lane. I have Apocalypse, Quirks (Eon?), Judge Dredd, Blood Royale and Dungeonquest from that era. I think my Talisman may be 2nd ed and I didn't get Fury of Dracula until the FFG edition. The last printing of FoD was by Wizkids and is essentially the same except for the inclusion of some pre-painted minis.
Thanks for all those stimulated memories!! What a walk down memory lane that was. I'm a handful of years younger but lived and played through most of these games in the 80's. I loved the original Talisman and still have it (but only got one expansion). I still have block wars + expansion - loved that game. I had a friend at the time who loved Blood Royale and we would have to leave out for days at a time, playing multiple sessions to conclude a game. Also loved Battlecars so much i had to get 2 copies so we had more board space :-) Some of the others i remember playing with friends but I didn't own myself. (as you do with close friends - better for each to have a different game if your families weren't rich?) What a decade for board games? fantastic
Great to hear your memories! They were amazing games because they were so unlike anything else available at the time - really the pinnacle for game quality back then!
wow I got Valley of the Four Winds, used to own that Talisman and own Battlecars and Battlebikes but I've never seen or heard of Blockmania, Judge Dredd, Dr. Who, Warlock and many others you show and I was a kid in the UK at the time into it when these were out.
Bloody hell, there some memories from my childhood there, I used to go into a store (long gone) in Peckham, London UK and remember buying some of these games. The first games workshop I went to was in London, I think it was Catford, can't remember, but I bought all the original space hulk stuff ( sold it about 12 years ago).
Interesting look at some of those old games. I have four of them. Really nice to see the original version of Talisman as well as some of the Fantasy Flight re-releases that I also own. Cheers Peter.
Block/Mega Mania was a fun game, as was Kings and Things - a humorous fun fairly light game that non boardgamers were happy to play with me when I started university in 1986. Talisman, of course, got far and away the most play of any GW games, we even played it at school between exams when we did our O and A levels. I liked Valley of the Four Winds because of the WD stories too, but in reality it was just a rather simplistic war game. I think Warlock was probably the hidden gem out of those early games. My first White Dwarf was number 9, though I did have a copy of number 6 off the back issue shelf at Dalling Road. I gave up on WD shortly after it stopped covering RPGs, because it just felt like miniature advertising, despite the fact that I was playing Warhammer and 40k battles in GW stores at the time!
I seem to remember an overpowered tactic of disabling the blocks sprinkler (fire control?) system and then setting fires on the ground level in block mania. The burning building would collapse in short order.
Thanks for this review. I am 5 years older and remember the impact these games had upon myself and friends. We would pool our meagre incomes to buy these games and in doing so formed a gaming group that lasted for years. Sadly, I have only retained Talisman 2nd edition and Judge Dredd. Time to find out if the others kept theirs. Great stuff.
Such a great trip down memory lane. I've been collecting the box Games Workshop games instead of their bigger war-gaming stuff. It's been really great to have these self-contained boxes of fun.
Not long after seeing this video I found someone selling a 2nd ed version of Talisman by GW for £5, which is less than 10 NZ dollars. I snapped that up and can't wait to try it. Whether I play it or not I'm very happy to have it in my collection. Now I just need the expansions for the same price 😉
