Jexus used Polyvoks wayyy before Mick Gordon even had a thing about it. Also some famous guys, like Moby, Crystal Method, Deadmau5, had one in their house.
Not to be captain obvious here, but the Polivoks seems to have a much rougher and more industrial sound, whereas the Minimoog is smoother like an electric liquid. However, to me that roughness adds a bit of charm. Plus it's like a 3rd of the price from what I've seen.
The Polivoks may be cheaper to buy, but I think the Moog will be cheaper (and easier) to maintain. As much as I love the Polivoks, I think that aspect of it will probably always prevent me from owning one.

Both synths sound awesome! I have a mini Moog and it's a pleasure to play and use in a song.When you use it in the context of a song it doesn't matter what synths you use just as long as the sound you're looking for is there.

In 1993 I bought a broken Polyvox for $ 10 and did not want to repair, I thought the analogue was dead and the "welcome digital" - came to the world ... :-)
Nice sound battle! At first I had it in my mind that the Moog would wipe the floor with the Polivoks but after watching this I think the Polivoks not only held itself but in some places had some really nice finishes and had a richer filter and it definitely has its own distinct sound like the Moog does. I would certainly have no issue using a Polivoks.
Everyone says its the Polivoks Filter that makes it sound the way it does: In actuality, there's a tiny exponential Sawtooth on every waveform, so your "squarewave" has a very steep and short triangle at the start of it, and your sawtooths have an odd exponential curved peak. It's the oscillator IC throwing a fit basically.
It emits a very short pulse on each cycle but I’m not so sure it is even audible. When I upgraded the op-amps it was mostly gone, yet I could not hear the difference.

What a great idea. I watched your excellent video on the Russian synth yesterday and thought that sounds very much like a mini Moog. It does very much. think the Moog won slightly on the sweep, slightly thicker. Well done. I love your videos. just makes me sad I don't have them Haa.
Never heard of a Polivoks before but I personally think I prefer it to the Mini for most sounds demonstrated. I must do some research into this synthesizer

Realize I got to hurry up getting my Polivoks together (threw out all caps and potentiometers and had new ones soldered in place). Also realize I have to hurry up assembling my Concertmate MG-1 after replacing potentiomers and switches. This comparison was really great but it’s down to personal taste, actually, and In my humble opinion, both instruments sound GREAT!
The envelope snap on the moog sounded very precise and getting to the point. Not saying i dislike the Polivoks..... I love it ❤❤. It looks industrial and hardcore. Great comparison vid R.S. 👍👍
I feel like the minimoog has a much wider range in the filter, and is just a bit louder & more abrasive. I bet it's better for cutting thru a mix. As far as the polivoks goes, to me the voice sounds softer. Once it gets out of bass territory it really sounds beautiful, sorta reminds me of a monopoly/polysix. They compliment each other imo, gotta have both lol.
Would be interesting to do a single/double blind test and see who can distinguish which synth is being played. Me thinks there would be a bit of surprise for everyone. ;)

R.D. Dragon Russian domestic market of used synths! But they will have shitty soviet audio outputs (not 6,3 jacks) and soviet power plug. It's not a problem to change it all, but price will be slightly higher.
Hallo Marko ! Moog is more creamy with many harmonics...the Polivok is more sharp, with harsh rough sounds. Into my ears imao ! Both are very different and it's cool to have one of each. Great video btw . Greetings !

I personally felt like the model D was the American A Clockwork Orange, good and a classic. The polyvox is more like the original version, the same but with a little something extra that changes the tone of the whole story and is an almost addendum.
I liked Polyvox bassy and warm sounds more. Chimes were cleaner and better on Moog. I would say Polyvox is a bit "coarser" and Moog more "polished". Both sound nice.
Da stehen sich ja zwei hübsche Schlachtschiffe gegenüber! Die beiden Klassenfeinde von damals , einer brachialer wie der andere. Der Moog drückt halt etwas mehr, aber der Poly steht ansonsten in Punkto Sound-Charme in nichts nach. Sehr cooles Battle!

был в свое время у нас Поливокс. К сожалению работать с ним можно только в студийном варианте. На живых выступлениях он мало применим. В нем нет карты памяти и чтобы накрутить звук, уходит много времени.
Great battle! Never had the MM (yet), but have the Polly. Yep, it needs a lot of attention, tweaking, tuning and soldering, but it's really worth it. Awesome synth. Have you done the temperature stability ajusting on yours? As his creator said, it's really helps making Polly stable. I can prove that.

+RetroSound Kuzmin once said that Polly's unstability is the factory fault. Every synth was supposed to be properly tuned on the factory. But nobody really cared about it.
Polivoks is the fucking shit. If i could get one thing in life it would be a Polivoks. You could do so much shit with it, forget the juno and DX7, the Polivoks is all a man ever needs.
3:05 I can't hear the attack of the polivox! Are these settings or the same attack as in the example of the moog cannot be done? 5:25 - After each key press, the polivox emits clicks - is it a sound defect or what?
+RetroSound It gets really hard to compare analog synths because so many of them can be programmed to sound virtually the same. This video will be destined to get views though. My Minimoog V Voyager video got hundreds of views in a 24 hour period haha.
The decision shouldn't be based on this test alone. This is showicasing the synths head-to-head as "all features being equal"... but anyone who knows, they aren't.. The polivoks can do things the mm cannot, and vice versa. so the only conclusion? GET BOTH! :D BUT, I think the Polivoks, utilizing it's entire feature set, is a more interesting sound than the MM. The resonance of the MM filter is smoother and more "whistle" like. The polivoks is just screaming and dirty.

Dankeschön für das Feedback. Einen Voyager habe ich leider nicht aber ich kenne ihn gut. Ja es gibt klangliche Unterschiede aber natürlich hat der Voyager auch den typischen Moog Sound. Man darf auch nicht die Spielweise unterschätzen damit es moogig klingt.

What a surprise: I didn't know the Polivoks sounded so nice, and deep and fat like the Minimoog! Probably this russian company copied the Moog-filter like so many other companies did. In the future I want both in my studios!
I have a polivoks, it's my favorite synth. And actually, it has an extremely unique filter. Formanta decided to build the filter without capacitors, which is highly unconventional and gives it a one of a kind sound.
Moog is a very poetic & extremely musical machine. Поливокс is cold, rough & stone as Soviet sickle and hammer. If there is a doomsday outside, I'd prefer to play a Soviet machine. And Moog - for all other peaceful days =)

i own a polivoks and to my hears the pure waveforms have unusual harmonics specially the triangle wave when compared to other analog gear i have.

The higher registers on the Polivoks don't compare to the Moog but the low-mids and low filter sounds on the Russian Machine had more character imo

The envelope on polyvoks is log or lin.. the moog seems more exponential. That has a huge effect on the character of the filter sound

I always liked the sound of my Polivoks better than the Moog. I think the filters are a little richer and more harmonic for lack of a better word.

Для начала сравни звук Муга 2;20 и Поливокса 2:51, у первого чистый, звонкий саунд и разве можно поставить рядом это Г. с неприятными призвуками и глухим звуком

I personally felt like the model D was the American A Clockwork Orange, good and a classic. The polyvox is more like the original version, the same but with a little something extra that changes the tone of the whole story and is an almost addendum.
This is awesome! Never of the Polivoks, I'm sure Eduard Artemyev used it.
Artemyev used the way more ancient and crazy soviet stuff - ANS synthesizer

I liked Polyvox bassy and warm sounds more. Chimes were cleaner and better on Moog. I would say Polyvox is a bit "coarser" and Moog more "polished". Both sound nice.
Походу для создания басса в композиции "The Force" Droïds использовали Minimoog.
Da stehen sich ja zwei hübsche Schlachtschiffe gegenüber! Die beiden Klassenfeinde von damals , einer brachialer wie der andere.
Der Moog drückt halt etwas mehr, aber der Poly steht ansonsten in Punkto Sound-Charme in nichts nach.

был в свое время у нас Поливокс. К сожалению работать с ним можно только в студийном варианте. На живых выступлениях он мало применим. В нем нет карты памяти и чтобы накрутить звук, уходит много времени.

Polivoks is more harsh and "industrial". Minimoog sounds very simple, like they have same sound, but Polivoks is processed by some FX.

Great battle! Never had the MM (yet), but have the Polly. Yep, it needs a lot of attention, tweaking, tuning and soldering, but it's really worth it. Awesome synth.
Have you done the temperature stability ajusting on yours? As his creator said, it's really helps making Polly stable. I can prove that.

This is the official site of the Polyvoks' creator Vladimir Kuzmin. I suppose you can mail him the questions about Polly, if you have some. Vladimir is quite open for conversation.
+RetroSound Kuzmin once said that Polly's unstability is the factory fault. Every synth was supposed to be properly tuned on the factory. But nobody really cared about it.

Не знаю, может компьютерные колонки передают не весь спектр, но мне показалось, что звучание Минимуг более пресное. Звук у Поливокс более насыщенный.
У них разный спектр частот.
Да, на муг хочется сатуратор повесить после поливокса

Polivoks was engineered later, so its sound is more refined. But still pretty the same.

They are definitly not the same but sound similar. The Polivoks sounds just a bit more harsher though which makes it the better synth for me.

+RetroSound It gets really hard to compare analog synths because so many of them can be programmed to sound virtually the same. This video will be destined to get views though. My Minimoog V Voyager video got hundreds of views in a 24 hour period haha.

The decision shouldn't be based on this test alone. This is showicasing the synths head-to-head as "all features being equal"...
but anyone who knows, they aren't..
The polivoks can do things the mm cannot, and vice versa.
so the only conclusion? GET BOTH! :D
BUT, I think the Polivoks, utilizing it's entire feature set, is a more interesting sound than the MM. The resonance of the MM filter is smoother and more "whistle" like. The polivoks is just screaming and dirty.

Einen Voyager habe ich leider nicht aber ich kenne ihn gut.
Ja es gibt klangliche Unterschiede aber natürlich hat der Voyager auch den typischen Moog Sound. Man darf auch nicht die Spielweise unterschätzen damit es moogig klingt.

What a surprise: I didn't know the Polivoks sounded so nice, and deep and fat like the Minimoog! Probably this russian company copied the Moog-filter like so many other companies did. In the future I want both in my studios!
And a Formanta Polivoks has only 2 oscillators where the Minimoog needs 3. So well done Formanta!!
Polivoks filter is the most authentic thing in its schematics
I have a polivoks, it's my favorite synth. And actually, it has an extremely unique filter. Formanta decided to build the filter without capacitors, which is highly unconventional and gives it a one of a kind sound.
Polivoks filter is nothing similar with Moog ladder filter.
Actually it cinsists only of 2 micropower OpAmps and use no any external capacitor!

Поливокс is cold, rough & stone as Soviet sickle and hammer.
If there is a doomsday outside, I'd prefer to play a Soviet machine.
