What I really like about Lionel is that he's all over the place. It seems like every few months he's figured it out and has a new approach to address all of his issues. I think bringing in the experts was the plan for a few months 3 years ago. Then it was something else. Then it was about getting the best coach. Then it was about self-coaching. He reminds me of me and so many other age group athletes. We're always searching for the answers. He feels like "one of us" just 10x better. So many of the pros don't let any of the insecurities show and keep the image up that they have everything figured out. Lionel just shows you what is going on in his head and it's really raw. I think most of us can relate to that.

He doesn’t belive in any process. He gives one shoot. One race and he got all this answers why is he not that good. 4 or 5 years ago I wrote a comment that he need to look what Lange was doing with first 3D cockpit! He was working with F1 team and canyon. Still to this day Lionel has worst tt bike, nothing on his bike is special custom made. He is absolutly very very far way from for him best position on the bike. Look Iden numbers on tt bike what watts is he putting and what average speed is he doing! For me it is very funny that every three months he is having new big idea. With swim Lionel you need to do one per week open water lond swim! Of course you need to go to Germany and do a lots of bike testing!

Sir, do not look right or left. Focus on improving things you can control: sleep, nutrition and recovery in general. Training is spot on. Be more cautious about your tapering and enter each race like it is your last - fresh and ready to put massive power output on the bike and on the run. To adress your efficiency - you would have to be in wind tunnel almost every month or so depending on changing the circumstances which you quiet frankly can not control. And nobody can.
The question is, why Frodo is the GOAT. He is, in my opinion, because he is staying consistent with what he is doing and how he is doing it. One thing I would consider is try to listen more to some swim coach and trust him. Hope it helps.

  • @Matt-tn4xl
    @Matt-tn4xl ปีที่แล้ว +4

You train hard as hell. You started eating better and you are seeing improvement. I really think that you need to allow yourself to recover appropriately, especially as you are now 35...sure, wind tunnel may indeed help you too. Some people mentioned open water swimming, I agree that would probably be very beneficial too. Looking at the results, you were 11th and about 5 minutes off of probably the goat of triathlon.. and you just had a solid win within the last few weeks. Maybe you just were a little off at this race, or a little fried... recovery is huge..best of luck

You are close Lionel, did not loose much time on bike and run, so the swim should be a priority in my opinion! As an ex competitive swimmer, I can tell that swimming is just about technique. Technique at every session, and tons of it, and always think about how you are swimming while doing a hard set. If the answer is poorly, then stop the set and do some basic drills to find again the feel for the water, and then restart the set. Always be accountable during the session, and train (if you can) open water swimming. It is totally different than pool swimming and helps a lot with getting that feel for the water that swimmers have. Keep up with the great and inspiring content!

Obviously not applicable to do that for your situation, but I always regretted not doing that while trying to get better in triathlon. If 6 months are dedicate to form and efficiency upgrades it might lead to better last years of racing. Who knows though; either way, always rooting for you and very appreciative of you sharing the journey.

Huge Lionel fan here. Read through most of the comments here. Some of it is hard criticisms and some of it hard truths. As someone who is looking at this from the very highest level; his swim cost him a top 5 to top 10 spot in this race or better. The race was done before it really began for him. You can't convince me that wouldn't demoralize a guy of his caliber to be 4+ minutes back after the swim. If he comes out even with Sam Long, it changes his entire day. And we may never see this video. Why? Before this, he said a top 10 performance would be A++. But now that he finished 11, he has to dig deep for marginal gains. I do agree doing the wind tunnel seems obvious and he should've done this ages ago. But the best course of action would be to continue on (and IMPROVING) his nutrition (tons of bananas and chocolate milks can be improved, imo), his recovery (which he stressed for like 3 straight videos) and here's the big one; he needs to shift his focus to open water swimming and figure out a way to improve his efficiency there. Whether it's finding the right coach or training partners (I still believe training with Sam is a great thing), find a way to not be 4+ minutes behind on the swim against the best! No matter what you do with the bike & run won't matter if you can't fix that. Point blank.

Jan is a huge exception. He was better 2, 3, 4 years ago. He is that good, that he is still in the mix, despite the age.
Most good guys fall off with 36-38 when they are still good but won't win the big races anymore. Countless examples for long course racing.
In the middle distance I guess it's even worse.
That's why I think Lionel has no more time. Now or never. His power will fall off soon or the injuries will come because the body had so much training for many years that it says no.. recovery times are going up from 30+
Look at Alistair, look at Gomez, they haven't won big races for years and are younger than Jan .
Which Kona champion in the last 10, 15 years is around 38 or older besides Jan won Kona 2019 with 38?

This is the first time I've ever really felt like they might be right. He really seems desperate. He can't seem to make a plan and stick to it long enough for it to have any substantial effect. I don't even think the issue is his age as some have suggested. I think his issue is psychological. 1. He clearly has some issues with commitment and 2. He seems to believe that if he isn't the best in the world that there is something wrong with his training, and so instead of focusing on progress he is focused on finding the one fix that will make him the best in the world by next month. There is no fix that will do that.
    It's getting hard to watch.

@@Triathlon. It's not "what it takes to be the best" lol that is very laughable as his commitment issues more than likely are the reason he isn't among the best. He doesn't stick to any of his ideas long enough for any considerable outcome to be measured. He literally tries something new until he has a race where 3+ people finish in front of him and then he gets mad and moves on to the next stupid idea. Over the last 2.5 years he's tried about everything under the sun and hasn't stuck to a damn thing much longer than 8 weeks - not enough time to make a significant adaptation. The most recent one was his diet and recovery, which I thought really made sense as it ties directly into a lot of the other problems he's been talking about. He worked on that all of about 2 months before he went to the US Open where there was a stacked field causing him to finish further back than he did at IM Boulder and Oregon lol (what'd he expect). Instead of looking for signs of progress, he threw his usual temper tantrum, abandon his plan and now he's on to the most absurd and ridiculous idea yet: "inefficiencies." He's gonna go to the fucking wind tunnel thinking it's gonna make him the best in the world and when it doesn't do it in a month, he'll move on to an even more ridiculous idea.

Unfortunately the biggest issue for Lionel is his swim. No amount of aero gains etc. will help when you coming out the water 4mins plus back.
I know Lionel is working hard on his swim but this is where I think he needs to really focus on if he wants to be at the front end again. Maybe he will never reach front pack swim but he needs to be coming out with the likes of Sam Long and then working his way up on the bike to give him a chance on the run.
Swimming is so technique focused that no matter how big his "engine" is, technique will always win. This is where in my opinion the most gains will come. This is where he needs to focus his energy on.

Most of us know the formula to get fit: intensity + volume + recovery. Few take the time to slow down and fix issues, explore new technologies, and gather and analyze data because there is a perceived risk-reward asymmetry. Why go to the wind tunnel when you can smash a 6 hour ride. Why do drills in the pool when you can do 100s on the minute. Having the discipline and patience to do the due diligence to address inefficiencies and improve performance apart from just more swim, bike, run is what makes one truly professional. Jan is a prime example of this.

You probably don’t read these,Lionel, because people leave suggestions about everything. But I will leave my efficiency swimming message that has helped me improve my swim times with less effort. My 100s in workouts have improved 4-5 seconds and the effort is less. I am not a bad swimmer to begin with and do swim a lot. A good swimmer in my training group said I work hard but my stroke is like Lionel Sanders-he told me to concentrate on my catch as soon as my hand comes out of the water by my hip. I now catch and pull a lot more water with lower heart rate and less strokes per length.
Would love to see you get out of the water less than 1:30 down

I think there's a lot of over analyzing here. ..Listen if you swam 2 minutes faster you were set up for a sprint finish for top 5 with Sam Long... Pre race that was A++ goal for you. Can't forget the swim. Jan always says that's why it's called a triathlon.

Like the high majority of supporters here that have thoughts on what you ought to do moving forward I too, have some thoughts! First things first, Lionel . . . you have made a phenomenal career in triathlon and have done phenomenally well for all of your inefficiencies (your words from the video)! I don’t understand enough about swim technique or bike technique to comment but what I do see especially in the swim is mobility issues compared to top men which leads to not as smooth a stroke - like you’ve said before you’re super tense and fighting the water (leaking energy). In the bike, I have found you to be an great biker as you’ve stated many times and are know for is your bike/run combo. I’m sure you have this set up or are waiting for calls back but simply go to the wind tunnel. Find your best position (dang it - you have earned all of the fans you have and all the support you can use from Canyon, nutritionists strength and conditioning coaches)! Nobody in my mind deserves this more than you!! Go to Germany, come back and ride the way you have but with better position and more efficiency. Your engine is massive, heart even bigger, more grit than anyone I’ve seen out there, with such a level of work ethic towards finding out how good you can be!
Now, you have run in the 1:07/8 range for the half off the bike in a 70.3 . . . yes more people are doing it but you’ve already been there and with as you stated inefficiency! You’re stiff and your form pays the price but you are a freaking amazing runner. In Chandler Arizona there is The Stretch Lady (Ann Frederick) who owns the Stretch to Win Institute . . . set some time aside and go see her! Her husband in a physiotherapist and is well versed in the Stretch To Win system and they were both dancers! They will help open you up and access parts of your body you did’t think you could. Finally, as a long time runner and lover of track and field . . . see if you can connect with Dan Phaff . . . one of the best technique experts in running period.
    In Summary:
You are a phenomenal triathlete who has done so much already . . . get the rest that I see you can get. “NO LIMITS!”
Go to Germany - do the dang wind tunnel get into the position that will gain you watts and more efficiency!
Go to Ann Frederick and her husband Chris in Chandler Arizona at The Stretch to Win Institute (one of the best places to invest) and I’m certain they’ll help you open up, reduce overall body tension which will help you in the water, and on the run!
Dan Phaff is the best sprint technique guy and he can sort that out so you’re more efficient.
Let’s go Lionel! Team Sanders with Erin and the little guy + Talbot, and all the fans you have are pulling for you ! No Stone unturned.
Jerry Rodrigues will guide you as you said.

Lionel has said that part of the issue with his swimming is a lack of (i assume shoulder) mobility? I havent seen him mention if he has seen physios/osteopaths etc to improve that. It's clear that its technique not aerobic fitness and his speed will always be limited if his immobility impacts his technique. And by technique i mean high shoulder recovery, not just high elbow which is always difficult for non-junior swimmers

FFS - I don’t understand how Lionel can still be talking about what he’s going to change post race and is still trying to figure it out. He’s not 25 but 35 and has been in the game for a long time. I don’t think the “other” guys are F1 at all - I just think they’ve gone to experts and have followed a set process that’s been given to them.
I’m looking forward to Lionel getting his act together and doing himself justice in a big race - he deserves it.

Love Lionel since day 1 of his TH-cam. But dude, not even taking canyon up on the offer is like not going to work. It’s simply the job to test. Also just fun to find watts.
Take an off-season and just spend 2 weekends testing things in velodrome and wind tunnel. Bike is really an easy fix to at least 90% of your inefficiencies.
Retire now if you’re too scared to go to a world class facility and be warmly welcomed and treated by experts that’ll also offer you a chocolate protein shake while all is happening.
That you still don’t even have somebody at least 1 time a week to keep you accountable for swim technique is also very surprising. You can swim as much as you want to, but you will just engrain bad technique more.
I think you’re on it now. Wish you all the best Champion. You will get there.

    Hey Lionel
Here some things you might consider
Your swim won’t be quick till you get your timing right , when your time is off your cross sectional area in pool is too large to slip thru the water(ie drills , flexibility) have a look at your race in pool your timing when you were tired was better than fresh
Your bike , push too big a gear especially if not on a good day
Spend too many days looking at watts than cadence have a look at the pro 90 + revs
When was the last time you did any motor pacing (probably never)
I also have trouble understanding the way u train way all the greats are doing 80 easy 20 hard method
Hope I not to harsh but I’m not sure if the people around you are telling it straight
Best of luck hope you can turn it around . Cheers bb

I’ve gone from being a huge fan to now a bystander watching the inevitable wreck as he fades into irrelevance. This guy is his own worst enemy. I hate seeing it as I genuinely wish him all the success.
However the most alarming part is he thinks post career he’s going to be a coach? Lord have mercy on any soul who’d take his advice from a coaching perspective and expect success.
Lionel’s problem is Lionel and the others around him who pander to him instead of calling him on his bullshit. He doesn’t need a sports psychologist he needs a full on behavioural therapist.
Clearly the guy has demons he’s not fully slayed just from switching drugs for fitness adrenaline. I’d guess that many of those underlying issues contribute to his lack of trust in others. It’s like he thinks he’s the only one who’s got stakes in the game so nobody else’s opinion matters.
We are seeing the beginning of the end. After he is destroyed at 70.3 Worlds this year I see him retiring. I’ll continue to pray he smartens up and proves me 10000% wrong.

In his defense about coaching, he knows what to do, he just doesn't have the patience to do it. A truism of human beings is that they're universally incapable of taking their own great advice, which is why most pros understand the need for a coaching team and willingly relinquish control over desicions to them.
