I work at a eletronic repair place, and i can confirm how deadly this is. We had a customer come in with no video just to find out the pcb was 100% bent. They ended up sending us a rtx 4070 super with there am3 3300 cpu. (Bottlen3ck over 80%)
PC cases in the modern era REALLY need to take a page outta the 80's and 90's builder playbook and add a PCI card ladder into the case to keep the longer cards from sagging. All the old whitebox machines had one but it disappeared in the mid-to-late 90s when more cards ended up getting shorter or integrated into the motherboard. It was especially useful on old XT systems instead of AT ones, they put EVERYTHING on a card and stuff like drive controllers and GPUs were long enough you'd sometimes have to move the hard drive to a 5.25" bay to clear them.
New PC builders should take a page outta 90's builder's playbook, you wanna know where? Simply build your pc HORIZONTALLY, the CPU heatsink and GPU sag problems are instantly solved just like that
Sometimes GPU sag can also cause damage to BGA solder of either VRAM or GPU, due to the PCB being bent/twisted. If that happens that's a pretty expensive repair, since pretty much the only option is reballing
My PNY 4070ti came with a little bracket that screws into the motherboard, you can’t see it and it stops any sagging. All GPU manufacturers should include a similar attachment on any cards prone to sagging.
Honestly that what they should do because if it’s sagging that bad because of the gpu just make it so instead of plugging it on a side vertical motherboard. Just lay it flat so it doesn’t sag. Obviously they may be some issue that can occur but like I’m all for like diagonal style pc 😂

Some do, gigabyte includes special brackets that attach the right side of the gpu to the backplate of the case itself instead of using a colomn to prop it up.
Did you know IBM solved this sagging expansion card back in the 70's and 80's? Full length ISA and microchannel cards had a holder that fit into the computer case slot support rail. Simple and cheap too. It was even part of the AT and ATX standards. It was removed as no one used full length cards since.

I got a threaded bolt and a nut through my pc case (it had 3mm wide holes covering the bottom between the power supply and the rest of the pc) and now that supports my gpu. It was a fun project and now I have bolt cutters which is fun
I’m a rubiks cube fanatic i got like 35 different cubes and rubiks type puzzles and so i just put in a perfect sized 5x5 cube to hold up my 4080 and it sits there to this day looking immaculate and fulfilling a purpose far greater than itself at the same time
GPU sag can crack the pcb just above the pci pins where the retention clip of the MB latches in. Checking repair channels on YT this does happen enough to definitely not leave a (heavy) graphics card sagging/hanging. It’s also quite hard to repair with a rather low success rates and not last as long.

My gpu surprisingly came with a anti sag leg that fits the aesthetic of the card so it doesn't look ugly or out of place, i think more companies should include the anti sag leg
A friend of mine has a 7 year old GTX 1060. For the last two years his gpu won't display when he doesn't have an anti sag bracket under it. he has to use MSI afterburner just to keep it from crashing because the card crashes when it get's over 70c for some reason. It's beautiful how beat up his card is yet it still manages to run.
My GPU, XFX 7900XT Black Edition, can actually sag enough that the fans stop working. To be fair it comes with a bracket that reinforces the GPU itself to prevent this but that optional bracket doesn't fit in smaller cases like mine so I had to use a separate support.
It can stress the PCB to the point it begins to crack and break internal traces. At that point, you're either paying an expert a lot of money to fix it, hoping the warranty covers it (obviously not Asus, cuz they suck), or buying a new one.
I recently bought one of those unscewable gpu brackets for my 7900xtx because since building it in early december it had tiny little bit of sag (it was so minimal that i dont even know if it would effect anything for years) but i bought one because you never know what might happen. But im still impresed by how sturdy the pcie slot is on the nzxt b650e motherboard.
Well gigabyte was good about making that pcie slot out of brass. Crazy thing though is my GPU instructions told me to use the bracket but there was not one in the box
I feel like constant thermal cycling is probably not great for the .50 cal rounds. Then again I guess aircraft bring them up to the tropopause pretty regularly.
I fixed my GPU sag by putting my entire case on its side. Whole system is way better now actually, everything aligned with gravity to have way less strain on it.
Im glad my case is a "Cube-Mini ITX" and everything is Horizontally mounted. No hardware sag, and it works perfectly with the idea of natural convection since I replaced the top window with stainless-mesh. and force ventilated from the lower quadrants with 3x 93cfm fans. (1x200mm and 2x 92mm) 4.7GHz stable (100% constant, auto-boost off) on air with no voltage increase on a Ryzen7 3700x in a 98F test room, who needs over complicated liquid cooling?

That's mainly why I'm going for a I/O upwards type of case, the GPU hangs from the I/O bracket which eliminates the chance of sagging.
I’ve never had a problem with sag as long as I’m made sure the spot where is screws into the case is tight.
That's why I like the power supply on the top of the case the wires pull up instead of down.

My itx case has a PCI riser that fortunately brings that GPU in an upright position.

I tilt my case 90°, so now its laying down horizontally. No need for anti sag bracket, holder, etc. No sag, no worries.
