Spoiler alert! Because today I'm forever changing the way that you look at the final scene of one of the greatest television shows of all time - Breaking Bad. The show ended with what a lot of people thought was a cop out. But I'm here to tell you that the ending you thought you saw might not be as clear cut as you think.

@@cctomcat321 it was as noir an ending as you could get. The monstrous Walter White gets some form of atonement and twisted justice against even worse monsters. And they wrapped up the family angle so well too. The finale for something like a breaking bad had to be about consequences, and boy were there many. What else did you need? What did you think was dumb?

we can't apply that medical logic in breaking bad. it's the same series where one antagonist gets half of his head blown off and lives for a few seconds instead of dying inmediatly.

His pride was the most important thing. Its the reason he left Gray Matter, it's the reason he became a teacher, and its the reason he chose to reject The Schwartz offer to pay for his treatment. The most honest moment between Walt and Skylar is at the end, when he finally admits he did it all for himself...not his family.

But he lost everything else
It's a poetic ending "He got what he always wanted, and lost everything he already had."
Walt didn't get punished? He lost his family, he lost his best friend, his money was stolen, he was forced into hiding where he was isolated with no one to talk to for over a year. That ending was simply giving Walt a little mercy.

Walt’s character to me reflects a lot of what Light from death note went though. They started out with semi good reasons. As time progressed they became corrupted and became completely different than their former self which led to their downfall.
Light jumps into full-fledged megalomania in book 2. Imo his transformation to a bad guy was anything but gradual.

The one thing Walt truly wanted was to be remembered fondly after his death. He told walt jr that in like season 4 and he said it in like episode 3 or 4. Everyone hates him and he died knowing that.

Everyone has already said it but I’ve literally never heard someone complain about the ending. In fact for years I’ve heard abt how good it was. Watching it recently I can also certainly say it was far from cliché

To be honest though I don't think the show writers are too concerned with medical plausibility, I mean no way Gustavo was surviving that explosion long enough to walk out the room, I mean it was a cool shot and I wouldn't change it, but it would of been impossible due to his proximity and the size of the explosion.

Did you not read the comment, I said exactly the same thing. It was unrealistic but that wasn't important because it added to the show's entertainment. I'm saying it's hard to do an in depth medical analysis of a tv show, it's likely that the show was rapped up with Walter's death, but I found the theory interesting at any rate.

Gustavo wanted revenge for his friends death he got it, Hector got revenge for the death of his family, a nice little circle of life, just not how the lion king pictured it :p
This finale was a total victory for Walter White and I'm sure he died happy for what he did and what he created. The reason why is because...
Walter avenged Hank's death by killing Jack and the Nazis.
He said a proper goodbye to his wife and family.
Walter and Jesse both forgave each other of all the things that they did(the nods that they gave each other at the end)
Walter dies in a meth lab of who he has become. Of what he has created. Of how he created...Heisenberg
This finale was one of the best finales that I have ever seen. This show is the best thing that I have ever seen on television(beats all of the movies that watched). I really hope people will read this response because of what breaking bad means to me.

The ending of the series broke my heart, everything from that kids and Mikes death and further, is dramatic af. I dont like the fact that Walter junior hates him, and i wish Hank never found that book in the bathroom :(

I don't think it's fair to say he 'won'. In the last episode, he says goodbye to a wife who hates him and to a son who wishes he was dead.The only other person who he cares about, Jesse, left him to die. Also, there's no guarantee that Skyler would get, or accept, the money. That said, I do agree he got off a bit easy and the ending was a tad cliched. As far as endings go it was much better than most, but it wasn't perfect.

Some things that cant be debated:
1) Walt dies and
2) His wife hated him fot the most part of the season. Walter Jr hated him in the end and for the rest of his life. Walter who loved his kids had to go away from them which tore him apart.
In many scenes in the end, he paid the price for what he did. Hank dying itself broke him, his family is really destroyed, the only closure he has actually is the fact that those 9 million will probably go to Walter Jr and that it was not all for nothing.
Your first point can be debated though......

@@darkassassinkantafly I understand.. but judging by how his character progressed, in the end.. we knew he would die. And the way the scene and averything was executed.. there was no reason for him to live.. the show ended perfectly with the way he died. Thats how I see it.
1) His son never forgave or at least stopped hating him
2) The murders that he committed that the police force didn't know was him will remain unsolved
3) He faced no *legal* consequences
4) No-one is there to make sure Gretchen and Elliott give the money to Walter jr and Holly (in case they figure out the assassins thing was a bluff)
These are all reasons for him to live, hence it did not end perfectly
@@darkassassinkantafly It did not end for him perfectly... but I stated a lot of reasons and you stated them as well why he suffered in the end for what he did.. but it ended perfectly for the show. Walter Jr would never forgive Walt. And frankly it was impossible for him to find a good enough reason to live. He loved doing what he did in the drug business. But now he cant. He did it for himself, his family was just a reason to fool his mind.
Legal consequences were the least of my concerns. I knew he would die rather than face that. He is of that type.

Walt turns 51 in episode 4 of the last season. In episode 1 of the last season when Walt is sitting in the diner he is 52. I'm not sure how much time has passed from episode 4 till Jesse getting enslaved but all up it would be close to a year that Jesse was a slave! Horrific stuff!
The screenplay of the final episode confirms his death, so he's dead. Also, what do you mean he doesn't have to atone for his sins? For the final months of his life he lived in total isolation in a cabin in New Hampshire, he couldn't show his face in public without risking his well being. To add onto that, no matter how you look at it, he's partly responsible for Hank's death. He didn't want that, but was forced to watch it happen right in front of him. In the finale, he's not trying to win again, he's trying to gain some semblance of retribution. This was where the finale differed from all of his previous schemes.
Before, he would do it for himself, for the personal satisfaction. In the finale? He's just doing whatever he can with what little time he has left. His initial plan was to have the M60 cut him, Jesse, and everyone else in the clubhouse down, ending it there, but seeing Jesse as a prisoner caused him to spare his life. For once, he acted selflessly in his scheme, and things worked out. The look on his face is the perfect image of the ending, not happy, not sad, somewhere in the middle in that grey area.
The ending tied everything up. Sure, the show could've ended with Granite State, but god damn it what's wrong with wanting an ending with a nice bow wrapped on it? The only ambiguity about the ending is Jesse, but even then we see him speeding away in a car, crying with joy. He can go anywhere he wants, he's free. It doesn't make sense how this could be a disappointing ending. Nothing really worked out in the end, do you think Walt apologizing to Skyler, telling her that he did it for himself just fixed everything? No! What is left of that family is permanently scarred due to Walt's actions.
Overall, this whole video is just wishful thinking. You're taking too many liberties with all of this, rather than just accept that Walt succumbed to his gunshot wound right then and there.

This show was perfect with a perfect ending. Matt Pat continues to talk out loud trying to be the smartest person in the room but ends up having diarrhea out the mouth. He can’t help but make himself look stupid by labeling his own opinions as “everyone else’s.” The comments here speak for themselves man, I’ve never seen a more disagreed assessment in my life.
Even if Walt did Die....he practically just burnt down the entire drugs industry along with him. He may have gotten away with his crimes but he's just wiped the streets clean of crystal meth

Who actually hated the ending? His family hated him in the end and he was forced to go to Gretchen and Elliot so his family could get the money. Which is the exact opposite of everything Walt would want. He got what he deserved, and his sons last words to him was hoping that he would die. Why do people think he didnt suffer any consequences??

The fact that Walter died on his own terms was a bittersweet ending. His family hates him,they will never know the money came from him and he dies but he is able to provide for his family,say goodbye to them and save Jesse. Even the ending is perfect.

Walter lost everything that he originally valued. Getting closure was somewhat frustrating, but it’s not like he got any forgiveness from his family, or even Jesse. In terms of his business, he did succeed though, killing his enemies and making sure the money reaches his family. Heisenberg succeeded and got closure, not Walt.

He very clearly states that he did this for himself. He doesn't care. He never did. He just wanted to be killed on his own terms. He didn't deserve to die happily but ultimately it was a satisfying ending.

To supply his family by any means necessary. He had his ups and downs with both Skyler and Walt JR. But as we see in the first episode, he seems unhappy, he's belittled by his son, wife, and brother in law, he lost his share in a million dollar business, he's stuck at a dead-end high-school teaching job, and on top of it, he gets diagnosed with cancer. I believe that Walter always had it in him, he just refused to show it. So this translates all the way to the final episode, where all of his goals are met, he killed everyone that stood in his way including Gus, he perfected a questionable but profitable art, saved Jessie from the Neo-Nazis, and in the end, he knows that his family will have enough money to supply them for good, while simultaneously getting revenge on the people who rejected him, he didn't get punished, he went through hardships for sure, but I think even Jessie went through more, as we see in El Camino, and he wasn't even the mastermind behind it all. Walter died on his own terms, as the video says, and this is confirmed by the apology he gives Skyler in the end, but that's just my take of it.

His relationship with his family was DESTROYED he didn’t even get a proper goodbye from his son, and he’s relationship with Jesse who he DID care about was effectively ruined as well. And he also lost Hank. Far from smooth
"He didn't get punished." He literally had to go through the most losses in the series in like 4 episodes. First, his relationship with Jesse, a person who was like a son to him, is totally wrecked. Then, his brother in law gets murdered infront and because of him, whilist the group of people who killed him take almost all of the money he worked for. Right after that, his relationship with his actual son and the rest of his family, including his wife is so drastically ruined as well. He then has to ask people that wronged him so much, people he hates so much, to give the rest of the money to his son as if it was from them.

Its so poetic that his main reason for doing all of this is because he was going to die anyways from an unstoppable cancer but in the end it was his own gun.

Before this video i had never heard anyone complain about the ending! I find it odd that full closure and Walter not getting punished are negative points because they do not define what makes good TV. Ive seen series like Sopranos where they don't give you the closure (despite making it very obvious) and people get upset about it. As for Walter dying on his own terms... why not? lifes not fair, i don't see it as a bad decision.

Yeah I never heard anybody complain about this ending either. We had just had the dexter finale back then which was complete shit so this seems like absolute gold in comparison. Hell they also gave abrams shit over that LOST finale that same night.
However I am very relieved this wasn't just a rehash of the "it's a dream and Walters dead in the car" theory. In reality everything possible popular ending was shown in the final season. The midseason finale shows what it would've looked like if Walter had gotten away with it completely. You get to see Hank slap the cuffs on him, and you see what it would've looked like if he had died alone in that cabin hiding like a rat.
