    Neurons are highly polarized cells, let’s keep it that way! Neurons depend on their highly polarized structural configuration to properly perform their primary physiological function. Maintenance of this polarity is critical to direct the flow of information in the nervous system and for proper development and function.
    When it comes to studying neurons in vitro, it stands to reason that one would benefit from setting up a system to maintain neuronal polarity. The OMEGA neuronal device platform does precisely this by employing microfabricated channels to sustain neuronal polarity and effectively isolating somatic from axonal compartments of neurons plated in the device. Each of the chambers of the device are physically separated by a series of microfluidic channels. The small size of the microchannels serve to fluidically isolate each of the adjoined chambers, but are large enough to allow neurites/axons to project into and interact with cultures located in the adjacent chamber. The ability to isolate chambers also makes the OMEGA ideal for neuronal co-culture applications.
    The unique open-chamber design of the OMEGA gives scientists direct access to their cultures, enabling researchers to explore new types of experimental paradigms not possible with standard closed-chamber devices. For example, the chambers are large enough to house tissues that are several millimeters in diameter, easily accommodating tissue explants or self-assembled 3D cultures (e.g. spheroids, organoids). Additionally, conventional patch-clamp electrodes can openly access the cultures, allowing researchers to examine the electrophysiological properties of the culture.
    Compatible with primary, iPSC-derived, explants and self-assembled 3D cultures, the OMEGA is the most versatile neuronal microfluidic tool available on the market. It is also easy to use: sterile, hydrophilic and bonded to high-transmissive cover glass - ready for coating and seeding cells. Maintaining healthy cultures over a long period of time is also easy with OMEGA devices, owing to the evaporation-minimizers.
