- Student protesters at Columbia University have been given an ultimatum: leave or face suspension.
They were given a 2pm (18:00 GMT) deadline -- which has just passed.
Hundreds of students have been arrested at universities across the US - as protests grow over Israel's war on Gaza.
They're demanding educational institutions divest in companies, they say are complicit in genocide.

They can get BA for 3k-5k a year, or MA for 5k-6k a year, housing subsidies, lottos for free land and housing. While the U.S. economy is in the tank, homeless people everywhere. YET just one of our colleges is giving them 61 million. Why are US kids scraping to pay for college, scraping to pay for insurance via their job, scraping to afford an apartment cause they cannot afford a house. YET through the university system endowments Israel doesn’t have this problem. Rather than the endowment investments being used for the college or kids in the USA it goes to Israel. As well, NOW they are committing genocide because they are an apartheid government who the U.S. is supporting while 1/2 of the U.S. kids cannot pay for tuition.

The truth is that the investments these universities have - in and out of Israel - are actually used to subsidize university operations as a means of reducing tuition for these students. I haven't looked at more than a few specific universities but student tuition only pays about a third of the cost of these kids' education. The rest comes from investments and other income.

I do not want the peaceful protesters to be arrested or suspended. However, if the universities suspend them, do they get their tuition back? And if so, are the universities able to return their tuition? If the universities are unable to reimburse the students, are the universities going to be able to afford that massive amount of negative publicity?
I'd think the university expelling students without compensation for behavior that robs other students of their own educational opportunity would be positive publicity.
As long as the protesters are contained and not provoked (by cops / use of violence), they should be allowed to protest for as long as they want. Other students who do not partake in the protest should not be hindered from going about their daily activities.

The issue here is that technically the university is private property; thus, technically the administration has the right to trespass them. Again, technically the First Amendment applies only to the *government*'s restriction of free speech - it doesn't apply to private citizens or entities trespassing or preventing each other from accessing or speaking on private property.
