- Dialed in a Malcolm tone on the Dr. Dan M79 going into the UA-Ox. Just staying on the bridge pickup in true Mal fashion!

One of the best Malcolm tone that I've ever heard! And this Firebird looks really cool with the middle pickup and the Burns vibrato
Cheers!!!
What a great sound
Thanks!!
You the guitar and the amp sounds fantastic
That sounds really great. Just the right amount of distortion and twang. You also play with great feel. Well done.
Much appreciated!!!
Great sound!
I recently got me a Firefly Tele-shape with Filtertrons and a bigsby running into a 15 watt/1 watt Stage Right amp. I can get pretty close to this sound.
Sounds killer!
🤘🤘
Sounds absolutely incredible! Thank you for posting!
Thanks!!!
Flick of the Switch \m/
Un rêve éveillé.
Awesome! I just got the 5237, I'm going to have to try the damping on the tail like you have.
Great playing, that Gretsch looks and sounds terrific.
Thanks!!
This tone is so awesome man, and you play great too!
Thank you kindly!!
Oh Yeah ! 🔥💥🎯
I’ve got one of these red beast tributes. I love it! Seems like very few people are giving them the props they deserve. I am thinking about swapping out the TV Jones humbucker in the middle for a T-Armond or T90 to get a bit more contrast in tone with the full-range Ray Butts filtertrons. Also, I find that this is one of the very few modern Gretsches with tone switches that actually make things sound better. I also sourced a Burns tremolo arm and unlocked the vibrato action. But it seems like the cylinder where the strings attach has been dampened, so I need to have another go at it. Otherwise digging it!
Right on! I’ve played with the idea of just taking out the middle and neck pickups to make my own “beast” pre paint strip! Haha
Sounds legit!
Cheers man!
Sounds so awesome, what is your set up, if you could I am looking for a good setup
I have a red beast.. the other pups are just for show.. I dont believe Mal knew that the middle position humbucker would sound sooo muddy.. if he was looking for more push he should have swapped the bridge for it.. but it was a happy accident as he discovered the bridge with 2 large holes giving him that huge woody tone we all know and love ..
Absolutely, funny enough I’m contemplating taking them out myself 🤣
@RockToneRevelry I have 2 other beasts..one hand made in England which is a VERY authentic replica..the red beast is over 8.5 lbs.. the other 2 feel like toys in comparison..too much wire..and windings...lol
Awesome playing, and killer Mal tone. That's it. It's spankier than most people think, that upper mid "OINK" in the strings. One question Riley, what gauge of strings did you put on that Gretsch?
Thank you! These are the D’addario XS 11-49’s. I know mall used 12’s with a wound G, but I haven’t gotten there yet lol
Are you ready for a good time!
Congrats man! Any advice to play Malcom's part of Thunderstruck? 9 Months and I can't find the rythm to play it right...😞
Yeah, I struggle with it too. It is so rhythmic and syncopated. I have no clue how Malcolm kept that rhythm going throughout the whole song.
Very good sound. Which speaker did you use?
Thanks! 00:36 - using the UA-Ox, custom Greenback cab setting.
Riley, I keep watching this video over and over. My god that's Mal's tone 1000%. And you're playing like he did, your timing and dynamics are bang on.
QUESTION: Is the bridge pickup in your jet a typical HS filtertron? It's very stingy sounding, a lot like the SoloDallas SD63 Solo'Tron, but I think the SD63 is only about 4k ohms. I'm wondering if that's enough output for a Marshall to get your sound. The TV Classic plus is rated at 7.8k, and the Classic is only about 4.8k.
I wonder because if you listen to Brett Kingman's prison break guitar here: th-cam.com/video/S2xYrJHMyU4/w-d-xo.html at 0:15 to 0:43 using the JTM45 model - Axe-FX III with a TV Jone's Classic in the bridge, his tone seems fluffy, pick attack is softer than yours, it sounds a bit compressed and spongy.
Last one, do you think a Dr. Dan 2204 stock values etc would get that same crank you're getting? Thanks
Thank you!!
These are very sensitive pickups and measure about 3.8k ohms. I’ve actually been wondering myself how close they’d be to the SD63. So much of Mals tone is how he played the guitar. You do have to really lean into it and strike with purpose so to speak. If you have a soft playing touch, it will not sound like this, it won’t sound “right”.
There is a lot that impacts the tone, aside from the playing feel, the amp is a big part of it, and even the construction of the guitar. This Mal Jet is fully chambered, and that tone definitely comes through the amp. The example you’ve cited here is a solid body guitar, and the tv jones classic is a bit higher output as well (sounds great by the way) - just depends on what you’re going for. The JTM45 has a spongier feel to it.
This 2203 has a tighter feel, and is more metallic sounding. A 2204 will be a bit more compressed, but overall you can get there for sure. This amp is “mostly” stock, only one or two slight value changes for a slightly more edgy midrange, but otherwise basically bone stock.
Sounds great of course. I'm mostly wondering the age of each LP. Thanks
You mean the one Les Paul in the background? Its a 2018 ‘58 reissue :)
Great Tone! what's your amp settings? Thanks
Thanks! 00:23
hi, great tone, it's possible to have ox preset ? thanks
00:37
@@RockToneRevelry eq, plate reverb ?
@@Binco93 if I remember correctly, boosted the low mids around 370-400hz, slight boost in the mids around 2700hz? Then a slight taper off the highs around 4K? I spent a bit of time tweaking this. I don’t remember what the plate reverb settings were. I don’t change them that much, mostly just the overall level to taste.
@@RockToneRevelry if you have a free time can you give me a screenshot please?
Where do you buy the Dr dan m79 2203 100w and the UA-OX please
Feel free to reach out to Dan on Facebook or through his website, drdanamps.com - the Ox should be available through any music retailer like Long & McQuade, Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Reverb, etc.
Thanks, i have contacted Dr Dan, one question to get that great sound you have, do you have to have an ox, or the head and cab?
If so what model/brand ox as i don't know much about them and what marshall cab are you going through please?
Last question, if you did not use the ox and only used the head and cab would you still get a great malcolm sound or not? I won't have a mike . Just checking in total what i am up for. Thanks again, i appreciate it.
@@geoffreyhatchman7915 the ox really pulls its weight, that’s for sure. There IS a difference between a recorded guitar tone to what it is in the room. However, I think it does a great job recreating the greenback cab sound in general. Just different applications. When using the ox through good studio monitors/headphones, you get all the nuance and detail that might not be accentuated in the room at a particular volume. Make sense?
Hi , Makes sense , could you please tell me what model/brand of ox are you using and marshall cab. There are quite a few and not sure which ons to use as being new to them, if you could let me know the models of each exactly what you are using to get that sound,@@RockToneRevelry
@@geoffreyhatchman7915 this is just the UA-Ox, not using a cab in the room at all. There is a screenshot in the video at 00:36 of the OX patch used :) the cab I also have in the room (though not being used here) is a Marshall 1960AX cabinet (25W Greenbacks) - the Ox has lots of cabinet models, this one is the 4x12 GB 25W PUNCH cab.
Needs to be a Super bass Circuit not a super lead Circuit.
Hey if you’d like to send me one I’m all for it!
@@RockToneRevelry Get DR Dan to Modify that one to a 1992 circuit.
@@94xjrgodown2 lol no thanks!
@@RockToneRevelry You won't ever pull a proper MY tone without a 1992 circuit! Been there done that with super lead circuits.
Isn’t this also a 2203? A mastermodel head. Not a Super Lead head to begin with? 😂😂
Please no amp modelers. You get all thos fake processed tones. You can plug a banjo and dial in this stuff.
Not an amp modeler, and not true at all. Thanks for coming out.
