  • Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian on the Gretsch G6131-MY Malcolm Young Signature Jet “There is just an instant rush anytime I hear AC/DC...It’s like mainlined into my brain. As soon as I hear him playing chords I just get excited, still, after all these years. If I put on 'Let There Be Rock,' I feel the same now as I did 40 years ago. It moves me in exactly the same way.”

    More About This Video:
As a young teen, Scott Ian actually learned how to play rhythm guitar by listening and playing along to Malcolm, who he considers the greatest rhythm guitarist of all-time. And given the chance to plug in his hero’s new signature model to a vintage Marshall amp and let loose, he was all in.
“It sounds great, it feels great,” said Ian. “First off, when I walked in the room, it looked great and you know it is going to sound good when acoustically it sounds so good. And then we fired it up …
“Look, I don’t get to play big open chords in my band. My band is all about down picking and palm muting, fast alternating - a completely different style of rhythm playing. So, when I get to hit really big chords and dig in, it is so much fun for me because it is the opposite of what I do. But, it is what I grew up learning how to do. And it’s what I still love, going back to that. Anytime I can just pick up a guitar that sounds so good and feels so good, and then play chords that sound perfect, I could do it all day. It makes me happy. I could literally sit for an hour and play that A chord over and over again and not get bored.”
After some lengthy playing-indulgence, we asked Ian to describe the sound he was getting out of the signature Pro Jet.
“There’s like this splash when Malcolm hits a big old chord and lets it ring out," described Ian. "He digs into the chord and that sounds comes at you. It’s like a giant wave coming at you, and then it crashes. And then another one, and then another one. And this has that feeling. When you dig into that chord, you feel the amp react. You can like, literally feel the tubes. You feel it. You feel that swell of volume, and then it pulls back. And then you hit another one. It makes you really feel like a part of it. It’s that swell, that wave, that splash of his tone, and this sounds exactly like that.”

Malcom had such a great sense of rhythm. He was almost more locked into the rhythm section than Cliff and provided that aggressive metronome so Phil could add his groove magic. The whole band worked so well in that respect, seriously next time you hear some AC/DC just focus on the timing of each member, there is some genius going on there.

the first time i stopped to REALLY learn Malcolm's part on "long way to the top", i've realized exactly what Ian is talking about, to play it right, to make the exact same perscussive effect rythimcally, it demands attention and some pratice because THERE ARE very cool variations and the overall result is much diferent than just hittin' the chords
Since them, i started to divide musicians by the ones that say "those are easy" from the ones that knows everything is a great lesson

Interesting side note: Part of the reason you still feel that way about AC/DC (not to hate on them, I love me some AC/DC as well) could be that almost everybody feels in some way stuck in their musical tastes of their youth (13-15 about) and it actually helps Alzheimer patients when they listen to the music of their youth.

Wow Scott has a great point. If any other person showed somebody three chords who would care... Malcom took three chords and turned it into the 2nd best selling album in the history of music ( counting all genres)
    Amazing

I am in total agreement with Scott. The music of AC/DC encodes something very special and unique, and it's effect on the listener is never lost. As good as Malcolm was, Phil and Clif were as integral. In short, unequivocally, the best rhythm section in rock music!

Not an Anthrax fan by any stretch, but I agree with every word Scott says here.

AC/DC has always been timeless. For some reason, to me, it seems like any one of their old tunes could have been made yesterday.

Nice, simple, & swelling with tone... the way rock was intended.

He says "Theres only one Malcolm...and..That's why there's only one AC/DC because they're the only one's who can do that."
Well maybe, but you can say that about LOTS of different guitar bands. Whether it's Zep, Floyd, The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, Phish, CSNY, Pearl Jam, The Who, U2, etc etc...all those bands are who they are because they are the best at what they do and nobody sounds exactly like them. Nobody sounds exactly like David Gilmour but David...nobody sounds exactly like Clapton but Eric. Most music fans with a good ear could pick out Jerry Garcia or SRV or Dickey Betts in 3 notes. These players are all unique in some way whether its their tone, their phrasing, their attack or their rig. Everything combined makes them the greatest players on earth. They didn't get famous and play sold out arenas all over the world by accident. So yeah, AC/DC has their own sound just many many others. My only point is, all these bands are the best of the best and are all unique in some way...

Eddie Pienkowski I agree, but I think Ian meant his simplicity cant be replicated, Vai developed his own tecnnique and style for instance, and just hearing a strummed chord from malcolm can be recognizable between endless strum chords, imo
