    I saw a video yrs ago about propagating Ghost Orchids. The things I remember is that it really likes low light... maybe 60% shade cloth. And the guy said they need a fogger 24-7. High humidity and very low light. To much to worry about for a guy like me.

    • @bennetriley1988
      @bennetriley1988  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I’m sure he’s right about the low light, especially since he’s growing outside. But I think growing indoors under artificial light can be a little different. Depending on the strength of your lights, you may have to keep it pretty close to the fixture to match the light you’d get in bright shade outdoors. That’s all I meant by saying they may need more light than you might expect. Yeah the humidity if hard to keep up with. I have a humidifier and it seems to be helping the angraecoid a lot. But yeah, the Dendro is a real hassle to keep up with the water. Lol

      yes, high humidity and warmth. These things grow in Florida swamps at high humidity where they don't get too much light. They should do very well in a terrarium setting.

    I’m not confident enough to have one. But I’ve watched a lot of documentaries about this orchid and think it’s so cool!! I’m excited to see how it does for you. I’m sure it will thrive for you. 💜 how cool would it be to see one in the wild in person?! Dream come true.

    I find your channel quite helpful as I am also from New England and can see how you take care of orchids throughout the year considering the same climate. I was wondering if you could answer my question on caring for aerangis kotschyana (from main land Africa). What kind of environment would you suggest I put it in. I've read that they don't like terrariums, so I've had it hanging over a tray of water through the summer, and spray the roots with water every day, but I feel it's not enough moisture (especially when winter comes). PS- the Ghost Orchid is an absolute beauty!!!

    • @bennetriley1988
      @bennetriley1988  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love to hear from other New England orchid growers! I’m so glad you like my vids. I don’t have that particular Aerangis but I have some similar ones. Yeah you’re right about the terrariums, they like the fresh open air. But it’s tough to keep up with water and humidity. Keep misting, I’m sure that’s helpful. But I actually give mine a good soak pretty often too. I think angrecoids are slow drinkers, it takes while for them to absorb. So I think that would help you. Just don’t let them get too too waterlogged. I leave mine soaking for like a half hour, then I make sure they get to dry out well. What’s yours potted in? Or is it mounted?

    • @tuuurtles
      @tuuurtles 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bennetriley1988 It's mounted. Watering is a pain, I lay it down pour a few drops on the roots, wait until it absorbs, then repeat for an hour. The wood doesn't hold any moisture :/ Here's a picture, hope it's allowed: sparrowlcom.files.wordpress.com/2020/09/img_20200909_115419213.jpg?w=768

    • @bennetriley1988
      @bennetriley1988  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for watching! Honestly, it’s not doing great lol. A couple branches of the roots dried up. But there’s still a good looking section holding strong. I don’t think I had enough moss on it in the beginning, so it was drying out way too fast, I added more moss to hold more moisture and it seems to have helped. I think it got set back in that early trail period when I was still getting a feel for it. I hope it bounces back. I’ll definitely talk about it in one of my next videos.

    How did you use glue for the mount? I have never heard of using glue, interesting. Love the Ghost Orchid, it looks great on the mount!

    • @bennetriley1988
      @bennetriley1988  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just add a dab to glue down the roots in a couple spots. Normal orchids are fine to be tied down with twine usually, but there isn’t much to these Dendrophylax, it’s just a more delicate operation. You can be really sparse and precise with the glue, and you don’t have to tie the roots down with tight string that might damage stuff. I found it was super easy and worked great.

    • @nataliez.7506
      @nataliez.7506 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bennetriley1988 That is so interesting! Regular glue or superglue? On regular orchids as well or just these? I find clear fishing line so clumsy to use and I sometimes mount too tight.

    • @bennetriley1988
      @bennetriley1988  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Natalie Zadrozna it’s super glue! Look for the cyanoacrylate ones, it’s like acrylic, which is basically plastic. In theory it could work for other orchids. But I think large bulky orchids need the support of being tied down with something.

    Hello I was wondering if you could help me with a question? I just received my witchcraft about one month ago. The levees just started going yellow. I've given it a quarter of cup of water twice since I've received it. But now I notice it is growing a new bulb. It is also in spike. I'm in N.J.. it's getting chilly, it's in moderate light. Should I still give it a little water. I have called orchid.com but they're not answering there phone. Love the videos. Any help would be appreciated. Have a great day.

      How is your Witchraft? Still have a new growth? I bet some people wild tell you to stop watering it and try to force it into dormancy to get it back on track, but If I were you I’d keep watering and fertilizing to try to grow out that new bulb. Especially since it’s in spike too.
