  • Since Charles Darwin, biologists have been transfixed by the evolutionary link between pollinating insects and orchids. Now a group of intrepid conservation photographers ventured into Florida's Corkscrew Swamp to try and photograph the interaction between pollinator and orchid.

What does it take to film something that’s never been filmed before? And what if that something is high up in a tree, in the middle of a wild swamp, in one of the most unexplored places in North America?
Well, this short documentary we're about to show you is about a team doing just that, filming something that has only ever been theorized; the pollination of the ghost orchid. And yes, this may not seem that exciting, but this mystery has become an obsession. Now, is it worth getting rained on while trudging through alligator and snake infested water? For these guys, I guess that answer is yes.
This is an amazing, interesting and inspirational piece. You'll probably be left wondering how they pulled it all off. Which is great, because we actually have a Q&A with the filmmakers after the credits, so make sure you stick around.

I've been saying the giant sphinx was too big for the nectar stem of Dendrophylax lendenii for years. I have photographed orchids in the Fakahatchee for 15 years but long before that I was into moths and butterflies. This discovery is awesome! I've always said it's likely the ghost has a few pollinator species fluttering around out there.

Alot of orchid hobbyist have tried growing this. Successful for a couple of years and then only to see it wither away. This dendrophylax is only found in a certain part of Florida and nowhere else. Hobbyist can successfully pollinate it and get seeds to grow but it's keeping the plant alive in cultivation.

I guess intuitive thought gave its probiscis too much cred. Thank you for demonstrating that there is much more to our world when observing it through an acutely sensitive lens.
