    Recommend drilling a small 1/4” hole first, then it will cut a beautiful hole.

      I know I'd rather spend $171 on a plasma cutter than drill TWO half inch holes through 3/8" plate with a hand drill, horizontally!

    • @w3vjp568
      @w3vjp568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gyppor you should always start with a small pilot drill bit, say 3/32”, and enlarge the hole with incrementally larger bits, working up to 1/2”. And it goes without saying use sharp HSS bits and lube.

    • @Gyppor
      @Gyppor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@w3vjp568 I do that, but it's still a PITA to go 3 sizes for each hole. Once I went to a drill press, I found myself going to great lengths to fit work pieces on the table to avoid hhand drilling. Besides, I would still rather buy the cheapo plasma cutter, it looks like more fun XD

  • @robertlaw8510
    @robertlaw8510 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That plasma cutter can easily cut through 3/8" if you have it on 240 volts running it with 40 and 50 PSI (and you won't destroy your consummables when doing it.

    Drill a 3,32nd hole first and the torch will have somewhere for the flame to blow out I do it all the time ,,,cuts perfect that way actually starts cutting right away

    I'm going to be one of those people who comments before watching the entire video, and point out what probably half the people have already said. These things work really well when you start at the edge, then slowly drag it through the gap you're creating. They can't really bore a hole.

      @@hypersphereengineering6015 What most non-farm houses have here is two-phase 120 volts, with each leg 180 degrees out of phase with each other. So, if you go across both legs, you get 240 volts. Typically, that’s used for electric clothes dryers (I.e, not natural gas or propane heated), cooktops and ovens, electric water heaters, and whole-house air conditioning. However, on many houses the main circuit breaker box is nearby to the garage if not actually inside it; so adding a 240v twist-lock (L14-30) or ‘welder’ outlet (L6-50) isn’t too hard to do, typically.
      Farm houses, being on a farm which may have higher powered equipment on it, could have access to three-phase power.

      @ericanderson8556 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Behind the barn real life Why wouldn’t it not work with gloves? You should get into a position where you are very comfortable and able to keep a steady hand. Use a straight edge or something as a guide to slide the torch along to make a straight cut and keep the torch steady. There are many videos explaining how to cut and how to repair these cutters. The main thing is practice. 👍

    • @ericanderson8556
      @ericanderson8556 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Behind the barn real life Also, if you get one with a pilot arc, it will be easier to start and run.

      Eric Anderson gloves make for soft hands. Not sure how I can straight edge a circle. And the point of this video was to see how well a $171 plasma works. We have since purchased a hypertherm powermax30. The pilot arc makes life easier but so did drilling a pilot hole and a good ground. What kind of plasma do you have?

    • @ericanderson8556
      @ericanderson8556 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Behind the barn real life I have a cheap eBay one too. But I have used all kinds. You should always use PPE. Not protecting yourself isn’t the smart thing to do. I mentioned the straight edge in case you were having trouble staying straight. They do make circle cut adapters as well. I think the cheap plasmas cut just as good as the expensive ones. They just may not last as long or cut the thicker material as well but for most home use, they are good.

      Paint has not effect on the function, only need to grind a spot to start the arc. Drilling a pilot hole would have made that process work as intended.

      JMTAUL still use it around once a week. Replaced the consumables twice. Watch it again. I’m not pounding on the blade this doesn’t have a continuous arc so what you’re seeing is the results of a bad ground sparking on and off. The other side went much smoother.

      @@davidbowser2395 - In a nut shell. Cheap Cut 50 (pilot version), small air compressor (25L tank). Work perfectly. On thin plate the quick, localized heat don't produce any appreciable distortion. Or at least a lot less than I expected.
      Get one they're relatively cheap, just make sure it's properly assembled. BTW mine add a faulty air pressure regulator (small leakage). 14€ solved the problem!
      For goodness sake get a longer power cable. Most are supplied with a ridiculously short cable! Other than that, EXCELLENT buy. ;-)
