  • I buy and review one of the cheapest plasma cutters I could find on Amazon, but I didn’t just go for the cheapest one available. I bought the cheapest one I could find with all the options and features I wanted.
    In this video we will review this Bestarc BTC500DP 50 Amp pilot arc start plasma Torch. @@Mikefestiva I recently bought an AMICO cut 60 HF Pilot Arc. It has the same torch head and I wanted to find some sort of drag cup for this machine so I wouldn't have to deal with the wire standoff. I was told by everybody that there is no drag cut for this machine and the nozzle is actually a drag head. The little recessed lines in the face should help but they seem too shallow. Do you have any suggestions of do you basically just use the machine as is? I love your builds and the quality of your work. By the way the cut 60 machine I bought didn't have any consumables besides the ones in the torch head.

      Great vid again. I was going to get one but the asshats at Amazon already raised the price 10 bucks. Their wonderful algorithm automatically raises prices when sales go up. Took only 3 days so no telling what they'll end up being. Something about the 219 pricetag tempted me. I bought plasma cutter a while back at around the same price point and it lasted all of about a month, (parts unavailable of course) so its painful to spend more on another.
      I was running at 110 and probably fried it as you described in the video.
      I have been really happy with my Titanium 200 I purchased on via your review however. Thanks for a great channel Mike

    Mike, yours are the best videos I've ever seen. First off you don't waste time with words and fanfare. You get right to the point and explain things perfectly like flowing water. Very educational, informative, and extremely time-saving for someone like me who is on a budget going through all of these pieces of equipment trying to sort out which one is the best value for me. I trust your judgment and your experience. I look for your videos first on anything that I am considering purchasing. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to publish your findings. You are helping a lot of people! Thanks again!

    Mike read the comments from the “Engineer “ regarding China, I understand why he may say this, but I look at all your videos and see what you have made and designed yourself with no formal training and using inexpensive equipment and it blows my mind. I’ll take a guy like you any day over him. I may be able to buy high end tools, but for a hobbyist like my self it is stupid for a tool I may use once or twice a year. Keep up your wonderful videos they are much appreciated

      Thanks for checking out my new video Chuck 👍 I understand the (Engineers) point he was trying to make and I even agreed that if someone has the money to pay $1700 on that tool then go right ahead, especially someone that is using it daily in the industry. But for a home hobby guy it’s hard to pay 8x more for a tool that does the same thing.

    I'd like to give a real world update on this plasma cutter. Based on your review I purchased one for myself and love it. I have a portaband in a table-top mount, an angle grinder, a metal cutting sliding miter saw and a cordless Makita metal cutting circular saw. A plasma cutter just gives you yet another way to cut items. Then we bought one for at work. I kid you not we have put about 300-400 hours of actual cutting time on this (weeks on end, 5 days a week) in the last year. It will cut 1/2" thick material at 45 amps. And running at up to 45 amps we have never had it heat up to the point where it would hit it's duty cycle and shut down.
    It finally died on us and I think it is just the HF start points need to be cleaned and gapped. But for work it is so cheap we just went ahead and bought another. These are great units and my guys love them.

    I don't mind paying more for that feature and your video is so new I had hoped this manufacturer would still have this feature. He stated they are out of that model even though the model number is the same.
    Clearly he ran out after your video as many went to buy the exact model. I do see cut 50's everyplace but they don't have the the front air pressure control.

    Hello, Mike. I ordered the latest version of this machine today. With all of the options available, I liked this machine particularly for three reasons. Like you, I liked that the water separator was a part of the unit, but the gauges and adjustments for the pressures were on the front. I also liked that the gauge had the standard psi readings. But, the really big difference in this unit compared to the other highly rated pilot arc units was that the primary plug was the 220v plug. Even the Yeswelder units had a 110v primary plug and you had to use an adapter to connect to 220 volts. I don’t like that at all. In fact, I almost ordered another highly rated unit, but didn’t pull the trigger on it because this was such a big deal to me. It may not really mean that much, but I’m the type of guy that wants to use the right input voltages for every piece of equipment that I have. I also have an older MIG welder that can do both voltages, but it too, has the 220 volt primary plug. So, while I have a very heavy duty 220 volt extension cord (with 6 gauge wiring), I really try to connect these units directly to my 220 volt wall socket. I personally believe that in doing so, the life expectancy of the unit is prolonged and the day to day functionality remains at its peak. I’m very glad that you demonstrated just how easily this particular machine will cut up to 1/2 steel especially since there are always reviews that claim that it won’t cut the thicker metals very well. I think you demonstrated quite practically that it not only cut it, but cut it very cleanly, too. Thanks again for the video and I look forward to many productive days with my new plasma cutter. Also, I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to more of your videos in the future. 👍👍👍

    I ended up with a Lotos LTP5000D, after going through 2 of the "Cut 50" style machines with pilot arc that litter Amazon. First machine was DOA right out of the box, second one was a different "brand" that wouldn't cut 1/8" angle iron on max settings. I'll spend the extra on the Lotos consumables, this machine just works every time I turn it on. It lacks some of the features you listed on your criteria list, but my criteria was simply it needs to work correctly every time and it does.

    As per my earlier comment, I did get the BTC500D ordered. The nonpilot arc. It showed up in 3 days and I paid 189 for the machine, 29 for a big pack of consumables, and $49 for a 4 year warranty. I put a new air filter dryer at my comp and dryer/regulator set to 75# on the cart the plasma is stored. So far I have cut around 12 linear foot of 3/16 hot roll plate as I'm boxing the frame on a ratrod build. Still on the first set of consumables and this thing cuts nice. The dross comes off easy and the cut is pretty clean. Me learning the right speed to pull it long distances has been the biggest issue. For 3/16 plate I'm running 24 amps and 50# of air. The book calls for 20 amps and 40 to 50 #. I thought it would be hard on my comp but in cutting 4 foot in one shot the 60 gal. comp only kicks on after about 42 inches. All in all I'm super impressed so far. Keep recommending super duper affordable tools like this one!

      @bunyanforgings7849 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've been using 1/8 inch hardboard to make cutting templates. Surprisingly, they stand up to lots of repetitive cuts. As long as the torch doesn't get hung up there's almost no burning. Mind you, that's with the tip actually dragging directly on the metal and against the template too. I suppose dragging on metal might be a bit harder on the tips and electrodes, but for that reason l picked a cutter with a PT31 torch. Those use the 100 piece consumable kits you can buy on Amazon. Additionally, the electrodes are double ended so you can flip them and keep going.

    Cuts look great for such an inexpensive machine. If it does crap out after the 30 day Amazon return window my only concern with these off brand machines is getting it repaired. My Hypertherm plasma stopped working after 2 yrs and 10 months and when I brought it in for repair I was happy to find it was still under full warranty. Good advice to try and beat it to death during those first 30 days.

    Great video Mike. One question: how much air do you need for plasma? Can you run a little pancake compressor (2 scfm) or do you need a big 11 scfm compressor. Thanks again for putting this together!

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These machines tend to use less are then a blowback pilot arc start plasmas, I think you definitely could use plasma cutters like this on a pancake compressor for a fairly short 10” cut on 1/8” and stop to let the air build back up. One thing to consider though is you definitely need the compressor on a separate breaker if you are only running on 110 👍

    I bought one of those Cut 40 machines a few years back. It was pretty inexpensive and actually works pretty good but it has a couple drawbacks. It's basically a scratch start meaning the nozzle has to touch to start (which does a job on the consumables) and finding replacment consumables and other things like the standoff you have on torch difficult or impossible to find.

    Hi Mike, thanks for the video, the camera gives great cutting detail, this is where I noticed the excessive cut drag angle. We used to use an oxycut table at college, this is where I used the characteristics of the oxy cut as a guide for plasma cutting. I have a multi functioning Chinese 200amp (uk 240v ac supply) arc, tig and plasma cutter. The Plasma cutter will do up to and inch, I typically cut 4-8mm. The cut is really clean at around 30psi and 120amps, my flame cut angle ends up around 85degrees, cut speed as fast if not faster than yours (this minimises heat transfer to surrounding metal)
    Our college lecturer showed us how to set up an oxy-actylene cutter, he explained that excessive flame drag angle led to a wandering flame and cut, the way to address this would be to slow the cut or increase the oxygen flow, or last case scenario increase the fuel mixture due to the oxygen doing the real work and the oxy-acetylene just providing a heat source.
    I can see your cuts are fine, I'm just wondering why it seems to drag instead of cutting through almost dead straight, I understand that you'll get drag on thicker steel, I'm talking about steel 4-8mm. cheers Darren

    I have been working with plasmas for 25 years and I have realized some time ago the number on the plasma is the thickness of the metal it is recommended for though it will cut thicker than rated it is not ideal and base the number according to what you intend. 38 is three eigths 50 half inch 75 three quarter and so on. Least amount of run time for portable cutters the longer they will go without repair. Blow them out with air to keep fans clean. Dark glasses and if eyes start feeling gritty and dry I recommend visine 7 in 1 immediately and just before bed. I promise you don't want burnt eyes.
