The biggest compliment I can give Turn the Lights Back On is how seemlessly it fits into his classic sound. You can easily imagine it as the closing track on Turnstiles or The Stranger.
@@chriskozak7356 Yes! A lot of others online have commented how it sounds like "She's Always a Woman" in spots, and thus place it with The Stranger in his timeline. I agree it's more Turnstiles, and you've hit the nail on the head with "Summer, Highland Falls."👍👊
Gosh I didn't think anyone followed Turnstiles. I only discovered "Loved these days" from the last season of Billions and I can't get enough of it. At the Grammy's that was my first take too. I love youse people where is y'all.
Why do people comment just to be negative? Billy Joel has sold over 150 million records and still sells out stadiums because his music is timeless. He has also made a classical album and as the late Tony Bennet said at Kennedy Honors, Billy Joel has written "the new American songbook". Educate yourself. If his songs arent your cup of tea, fine. However 1st listen to deep cuts like Big Man on Mulberry Street, Pressure, Live in USSR. 1st rock artist invited to play before the fall of USSR.
He is TOO miserable a person to write more songs, especially record a new album! Last being 1993's River of Dreams! I gave up on that ship decades ago! Still touring for a greatest hits also from the late 90's🤔
I’ve been a fan of Billy ever since I was sitting with my dad in 1986 watching Penn State Nittany Lions beat Miami Hurricanes for the national championship. Immediately after the game was over that night they had a montage of the season set to This is The Time(which was his hit single at that time). Its my earliest vivid memory with my dad. I was 6. He passed away last year. So needless to say, that song holds a very special place in my heart. Anyways I only mention that because I drifted away from Billy‘s work for a while bc he hadn’t released anything new in decades. I’m a huge music nut so I explored everything/everyone else. But when I saw him on the Grammys the other night and heard this song along with his live performance of You May be Right, I was *floored* by how well his voice has aged. As a standalone performance he sounds great. But when compared to some of his contemporaries (e.g. Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, etc), or even artists who are the next generation and younger(eg Bono), it makes it stand out even more. Its really impressive for a guy who is 74. Ok I’ll stop talking now.
You didn't say too much. Billy is one of those artists who can stop making records in 1993 yet sell out stadiums to this day. So many artists do a "comeback song" and i get 2ndhand embarrassment for them. NOT BILLY JOEL! His voice is rich and strong and this song is already a classic to me. 😊
Thanks! I couldnt afford the show tonight, so thanks for the quick upload! This might be the best version of the song so far. Everyone is into it. Billy, the band, the crowd. It's beautiful. 2024 and Billy's playing new material. Wow!
First new song in 31 years live in concert for the first time AND at The Garden. Must have been amazing to be there. This moment! ❤️😎🎹 Thanks so much for uploading this.
@@ChiSportsNut18Right, but it wasn't a pop song release. It wasn't meant to be a release. It was written for his then-wife Katie Lee for Valentine's Day, because she asked him to write a song for her.
First, thank you for posting this. Second, beautiful song and so glad to have Billy singing again. Third, for anyone out there who really analyzes music or wants to be a musician, the reason this song resonates so much with sadness, apart from the lyrics, the very beginning is the funeral march from any classical piece. That is some construction, that is building on thousands of years of evoking emotions. Before one word is uttered, the listener feels lost. And the funeral march chord progression proceed throughout the song. This isn’t the first time Billy used to classical music, look to This Night and Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata that Billy used for the chorus. So glad to hear him composing again
Singing again? The guy has had a monthly residency at Madison Square Garden putting on full concerts of his greatest hits for the last decade and has played (and sang) at least as many other concerts around the world and in the US too. Billy Joel has literally never stopped singing. True friends of his career know this.
@@mrtyreus0 I get what he means. He has not been composing new pop songs. Just relying on his catalog for 30 years. Playing for the $$$. Not putting him down. He can do what he wants and he claims songs do not come easy to him. Compare and contrast to Dylan and Simon who have kept writing new songs for the last 30 years.
Good analysis. " Before one word is uttered, the listener feels lost." No. There is no chord intro. He starts off immediately with the words "Please open the door". It is the opening line that create the sadness. The opening chords are C and F. Nothing particularly sad about that chord progression. That chord progression has been used a million times in happy songs... Granted, the chords change after that. But it is the lyric that creates the opening sadness.
This song says exactly what I’m going through with my one and only love my Nika my (ex) wife please pray for our reconciliation ❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Your mind, body and soul deserve freedom from attachment. If you have to comment on youtube and ask for prayers, then its a clear sign to be over.... and yes, its okay. Just celebrate the good times, and move on.
Absolutely an American treasure and musical genius. When Liberty Devito wrote his book, he and Billy mended their friendship. Liberty freely says that Billy is a genius. 😊
Dear Mr., Joel, I've been a fan of yours since I was a child. I've loved everything you've done musically. I know that you did stuff earlier, but I still remember "just the way you are" like it was yesterday. Even though you might not be relevant to the gen-somethings, you are still relevant to me (59 years old). I believe that my generation misses your talent. I can't stop listening to this song, It's beautiful! Please sir, please keep it coming. You are musical icon and we all deserve to hear more from you. Not too much pressure there huh?
Billy Joel, a life long favorite, attended MSG show, and loved him there, as well as at Giants Stadium with he and Elton John playing each other's music ! Magical and memorable !!!
Beauteous 🥰 for the man who's music made a big contribution to the soundtrack of my youth this speaks to where i am at in the journey all these decades later🌹 Gratitude @BillyJoel for keeping the Music going 👣🎶🎹💜🌎
LOVE BILLY! SO Many Great Songs! So Many Great Times! SO Many Great Memories! HIs song "Elegy: The Great Peconic" inspired me to recently write a story I hope to get published with his approval!
Thanks for posting, must have been awesome to be there. I love how happy he is with the crowd's reaction, he seems so glad everyone like the new song ❤
Wouldn't know what to do: sing along to show Billy I know every note by heart already or be quiet to listen wholeheartedly to his "first real" live performance!

I was thinking, it has Turnstiles vibes, alot like Summer, Highland Falls and James.

This is exactly what I've been saying since I first heard it - sounds like it could be from Turnstiles...
It has Piano Man elements in the break too!

This song is on the verge of being regarded as a classic track for Mr Joel.
Like so many others
Oh please... like one of Billy's 1000 or so other classic tracks ?
Next week he will have a new song and this will be just another one.
who? だれが?
Of course

When his tours lack an audience, you can come back and criticize.
@@janetives5470 I'm not criticizing, I'm just sick of him!
I just can't stop thinking about the lyrics. It hits home. It's never too late for love. Swallow your pride and be the one to reach out.
Beautiful Mr. Joel. You sound great and are a national treasure.
We Are!
I love this version! His phrasing of the words are much better, he’s making it his own!
I also noticed. Billy live is a sensory experience. I saw him in 22 at Notre Dame to full stadium and at 73 he gave an almost 3 hr show! ❤

Billy a real one for sitting on a drum throne while playing piano. Honestly, that’s the move
He inspired me to to replace my bench with a drum throne
as a professional piano player, the drum throne is the only way.
But I am here right now!!! Classic line!
I've been going back and watching old Billy concerts and I was starting to wonder if his seat had springs in it with how much he bounces. LOL
Billy Joel are amazing!!! You are one of the best.

Billy is still going to play the Garden, but not once per month. It’s worth it to get tickets after his 100th show of his residency.
Just amazing.
This is his best performance of the song. you can tell he feels at home in msg
Thanks for The Goods!
It has been too long for one of my idols to re-emerge.
He's baaaaack. Insta-classic
What a beautiful song!❤
Reminds me a bit of Neil Diamond’s - I’ve been this way before
Hope a full new record is coming soon!

I like this version the best between the studio recording and the grammy performance.
