But I guess that comes with any channel - filtering out the ones that are really good to review and that give some architectural insight as they often times have the actual architect explain the visionary concept.

i love to watch all the NYC home tours because they have a lot less space to work with. i don’t live in new york, but the amount of space rich people can afford in new york is often similar to the amount of space that the rest of us can afford outside new york, so it ends up being more relatable
What I got from Sofia's house tour is the vibe that for each room, they went with a pretty coherent Pinterest inspo, staged stuff from those one angle shot for each room and then went very safe (boring and white) the rest of the space. Also, seeminly very little intentional conversation between home's architecture and the way it was furnished and staged.
Bro, I've considered going back to college to study and practice architecture or interior design for years (studied sculpture originally) and these concise, well spoken explanations of design theories are really making the decision easy for me. Cheers, keep up the great work.
I learned a lot from this format. Especially from unexpected things like the level of the artwork with the TV and cabinet. I think its really helpful hearing your insight as to why something didn't work, and then seeing your examples of what would have been better. I would love to see videos of home tours where you really love the design, and talking about how the choices were made and why it all works so well.

I almost felt like she had these pieces from a previous house and just used them in this new house. when I first watched it, i knew that art piece looked odd, but as you said, she had no other contrasting pieces in the room so makes sense.

as a fellow design geek I agree with most of your points. i think you have a very sophisticated taste, but I also think it's not for everyone's house. Sophia is obviously obsessed with those sconces and chandeliers and I think that's fine because its her house and her style.
I totally understand what you’re saying, and we all have different taste but in regard to the Chandelier, I think it was less about the Chandelier concept and more about how it’s trying to be authentic but it’s not. If it was an authentic chandelier from the actual time it’s replicating it would make more sense. Kind of like plastic plants. Just get the real thing or don’t.
Yes please. Do more of these case studies as well. I would also like to see different home decore styles as well. I enjoy variety. What sets your channel apart is that your input is more thought provoking. Avoid videos like 10 things to make your home/kitchen/bath look more luxury/expensive etc. What I really appreciate is learning and understanding more about the theory and the intelligent discussion.

Although I have zero budget I'm having to decorate every room in my home and I feel this kind of review is really helpful to look at the do and do nots to get a cohesive look. Have loved both types so far! I think doing little miniature makeovers changing one element would also be a great way to learn. For instance, showing 3 different lighting plans in a space could really help us learn how a plan gets put together and what makes it successful.

I agree. the mid-century examples he showed were just totally out of keeping with the spanish/french or traditional aesthetic. I think the whole thing would have been more useful if he's used examples of traditional or classical furniture rather than stuff from the 50s that would look so very out of place in that house
@@HomeFromFarAway I think he did not give those examples with the intention of proposing them as an alternative, but to illustrate a concept: "I would look for this type of contrast", "I would put furniture with natural-colored wood", "I would place lamps that filter the light or reflect it, not bulbs in sight".

Great video! I would love to see more like this! Whenever I was the AD tours I’m always bothered by them slightly and can never figure it out. It was so satisfying to finally define what isn’t working. Also it’s nice to know that just because the home is large and expensive, doesn’t mean it’s well designed.
Sooo glad to see you do this review. I watched her home tour and was feeling all the same things as you…. It just seems off and there’s lots of missed opportunities to utilize the space better. You always know how to eloquently verbalize what we’re all thinking!
You have such a good eye and I learn something every time I watch your videos. That you noticed that gap at the top of the kitchen cabinets was really something. I am just not that visually acute, I guess. TOTALLY agree about the grey wood, though, ugh. You could certainly do more of these videos. You did it very well, too, not mean and catty, but what you like and why, and what you would do differently and why. Just the right tone, imho.
Finally!! Noah, your feelings about flame-shaped lightbulbs and antiquated chandeliers are really speaking to me. To touch on the chandeliers thing very briefly, my biggest issue with them is that they are 100% a status symbol, at least at their inception. They are saying look how much $$$ I have-I have so much that I don't even need good lighting!! Love Sofia of course queen

Sofia went all pastel ornament way. I think it’s what a lot of women, that don’t think too much about interiors, do. It’s a beautiful home, but I do agree with your critique points. I bought myself a 50s ceramic space age lamp which is quite eye-catching, it has a pearlescent glaze. I’m sure it’s not your style but would love to hear more about your thoughts on ornamentation as I’m moving in with my boyfriend soon and we need to get on the same wavelengths with your design principles!!
iHi Noah, your videos are amazing. Here's an idea: I would really like to know how you would approach furnishing, e.g., a living room. I'm talking about conceptualizing the layout. Where should the couch be? How do I decide that? Where should the shelf go? I've watched quite a few videos, but their input has been quite generic ("start with the big pieces and then the smaller ones", like duh). I'm just in the process of completely redecorating my flat and I'm so excited, but I don't wanna make mistakes by buying a $4000 couch just to find out that the layout I had in mind doesn't really work, and I don't know where to go from here.
New to your channel, and love it! Unfortunately, some of us have misophonia and we have a hard time with the noise from your coffee drinking at the start. Just thought I’d share this in case you’d be willing to turn the sound really low on that part or skip it altogether. Though I do like the coffee/tea drinking vibe (just not the sound). Thank you for taking this into consideration!
I personally dislike her style of chandelier/sconces. I just don't like them, in any context, including antique version in ancient manor houses. That said, I recognize that some people love them. I can't find it in me to criticize people for having things they love in their homes just because I don't find those things visually appealing. I find it more useful, in these cases, to stick to considering how best to integrate those things into the design as a whole, rather than just pointing out that there are items that I personally like better.
Because I can't afford purchasing art from actual artist I decided to design my own art to frame. I'm happy to have a unique piece of art that can share a story about haha. Great video!
A fun watch, but personally I'd prefer your videos didn't go down the celebrity homes route. 'Feels too 'judgy' and too close to the unfortunate obsession these days with 'celebrities' and their lives. Your videos up to that point have had such an authentic, nice vibe. I'd be much keener to know what you personally like and why. My view: Please leave out celebrities. 'Have repeat watched all your other videos so far. They are brilliant. Thanks!

As lovely as Sofia Vergara seems to be, personally I prefer design content that doesn’t focus on celebrities (or products). For video ideas (and research) there’s a book I bought for my brother a while back titled “Intimus: Interior Design Theory Reader” that you might find useful. And you might also appreciate the Christopher Alexander’s eccentric 1977 classic “A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction”.
not a fan of celebrity homes, they all seem weirdly trendy and not like some place people actually live. I did see one that a celebrity was giving of her place and she actually had things on the counter like people actually cooked and ate in the space.( not prop styled things) It was so refreshing. That being said, I did learn a lot from this video about why I did not like the space, you are very good at articulating the issues. Though I am still not totally convince on the flame bulbs in chandeliers and sconces being bad, i'm sure if you keep repeating it, i might become a believer. 😂
I never would have watched that video without you (I absolutely hate celebrity tasteless white spaces) and I thought your critique was really constructive. usually this type of video falls into the bashing category. please do more !
Wonderful review, IMO. Design Daddy did one as well, and I think I am more on par with you. I have to say that the Latino aesthetic is typically very loud, ornate, and colorful. Personally I think it reflects their environment, the tropics, so it does not look at all like New England. Maybe she is trying to go against that, and went too far? The house and exterior amazing, so we have at least 3 different designers here. That 2" space above kitchen cabinets just irks me. So did the window sills on the back façade. Those 2 large doors really should have read as all one door on the balcony. The dining chandelier competes too much with the beautiful ceiling, maybe because there is no style contrast. The gold bed bothered DD, but I like it, but not the other washed out furniture. I can say that at least the house is not gaudy or cluttered. The only thing I disagree with you is that an exhaust fan should never be the focal point of the kitchen, that makes no sense to me. That bench next to the tub is just WRONG, on any level. So are the doors to the bar, I mind the mirror behind the iron grill the most, but the whole thing is WRONG. Hindsight is 20/20, but the interior designers seem inept, or had their hands tied. So this house is washed out and not inspiring. Maybe even sparse, but not gaudy. She is cute, and seems real. She is certainly not showing off, she almost seems grateful. BTW, she remolded this house, she liked the exterior so much. It wouldn't be hard to correct most of these flaws, none are major projects. Thanks.
I'm wondering if the gap above the cabinet is for up-lighting by light strips maybe? Either way, it doesn't look good. And light strips under/over cabinets don't look good either IMO, in most cases anyway.

A fun watch, but personally I'd prefer your videos didn't go down the celebrity homes route. 'Feels too 'judgy' and too close to the unfortunate obsession these days with 'celebrities' and their lives. Your videos up to that point have had such an authentic, nice vibe. I'd be much keener to know what you personally like and why. My view: Please leave out celebrities. 'Have repeat watched all your other videos so far. They are brilliant. Thanks!

This particular house tour wasn’t that interesting to me. It’s nothing I haven’t seen before. Nice looking but didn’t feel that personal or relatable.

As lovely as Sofia Vergara seems to be, personally I prefer design content that doesn’t focus on celebrities (or products).
For video ideas (and research) there’s a book I bought for my brother a while back titled “Intimus: Interior Design Theory Reader” that you might find useful.
And you might also appreciate the Christopher Alexander’s eccentric 1977 classic “A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction”.

not a fan of celebrity homes, they all seem weirdly trendy and not like some place people actually live. I did see one that a celebrity was giving of her place and she actually had things on the counter like people actually cooked and ate in the space.( not prop styled things) It was so refreshing. That being said, I did learn a lot from this video about why I did not like the space, you are very good at articulating the issues. Though I am still not totally convince on the flame bulbs in chandeliers and sconces being bad, i'm sure if you keep repeating it, i might become a believer. 😂
I never would have watched that video without you (I absolutely hate celebrity tasteless white spaces) and I thought your critique was really constructive.

I have to say that the Latino aesthetic is typically very loud, ornate, and colorful. Personally I think it reflects their environment, the tropics, so it does not look at all like New England. Maybe she is trying to go against that, and went too far?
The house and exterior amazing, so we have at least 3 different designers here.
That 2" space above kitchen cabinets just irks me. So did the window sills on the back façade. Those 2 large doors really should have read as all one door on the balcony.
The dining chandelier competes too much with the beautiful ceiling, maybe because there is no style contrast.
The gold bed bothered DD, but I like it, but not the other washed out furniture.
I can say that at least the house is not gaudy or cluttered. The only thing I disagree with you is that an exhaust fan should never be the focal point of the kitchen, that makes no sense to me.
That bench next to the tub is just WRONG, on any level. So are the doors to the bar, I mind the mirror behind the iron grill the most, but the whole thing is WRONG.
Hindsight is 20/20, but the interior designers seem inept, or had their hands tied.
So this house is washed out and not inspiring. Maybe even sparse, but not gaudy.
She is cute, and seems real. She is certainly not showing off, she almost seems grateful.
BTW, she remolded this house, she liked the exterior so much.
It wouldn't be hard to correct most of these flaws, none are major projects.

That stove is handmade in France and take about a couple months to a year depending on the specs required and cost about half a mil 😭 dream stove

I'm wondering if the gap above the cabinet is for up-lighting by light strips maybe? Either way, it doesn't look good. And light strips under/over cabinets don't look good either IMO, in most cases anyway.
