Great video Harry and very fair, I have owned a few X5s both diesel and a petrol which had been converted to Gas. The petrol was a 3ltr and was great wether running on gas or petrol but without doubt the diesel was both more economical and gutsy than the petrol and did around 30/35 mpg depending on hard you pressed the power pedal. This X5 looks brilliant but fitting the 3ltr diesel would have made it outstanding on fuel. Whilst you say the price of this X5 is £66,000 and good value not everybody including me cannot afford this sort of money so I'll just have to wait around 10 years till it becomes affordable but I would love one, the trouble is ill be 85 by that time so may not need one anymore, I will stick with my BMW 730 ld for the time being with its £160-00 a year road tax and live in hope that I make it.
The engine will be cold and I doubt the oil pressure will be fully reached as well. Really bad for rod bearings as they need to warmed up otherwise they wear out
@@leenevin8451 I believe a lot of these hybrids find ways to keep the fluids in the engine warm, and I know the Mondeo will turn the engine on intermittently to keep coolant temp. Same for stop-start engines, they won't work unless the engine is warm.
Nice video Harry :-) The only problem with this type of PHEV is that if you don't plug it in when you get to your destination, getting back home you're lugging around that great big battery with that great big engine glugging loads of petrol. 🤷🏼♂️
I think towing ability of this would also be higher than a full EV. Which is a big selling point too for people who tow occasionally or when towing do mostly longer distances. Great video Harry, like always!
@@resnonverba137 Well, I've worked at a Hyundai dealership and I stopped recently. In there plugin hybrids (ioniq hev and or phev) they used really thin oil for the engine so it got up to temperature just as fast as as regular petrol engine. However. The normal hybrid vehicle I drove, always fired up the petrol engine as soon as I started it when it was cold outside, just to put some temperature in it. I think, unless you really put your pedal to the metal, the engine will be fine. However, I've got no proof. These cars are just 4 years on the market now an no errors have occurred yet.
Res Non Verba id imagine as long as you stay under 4K rpm it’s fine. I’m curious if the engine has a heater on the block to get temperature into the engine. I’ve owned two Bmw now and they typically don’t get up to temperature for the first 15-20 mins of driving so I’m very curious.
Great video! I love how you explained all the maths of it whilst actually driving.. very impressive and clearly indicates you've done your research and subsequent homework!
@@visionist7 Wrong, a purpose built weight balanced BEV designed for Fun Handling. BEV architecture just allows better Packaging of heavy big components. Majority will be RWD biased and have more space for Complex Bulky Suspension like Double A Arm with no big lower Strut. Then the low and flat weight will make the mass easy Rotate & Turn. We're talking about a hunkered down RWD biased chassis that likes to Rotate. It will shove your spine in multiple direction, needs serious Sports Seats with side bolstering. Mind blowing.

How come you only have 305 subscribers Harry, That is crazy. Should be at least 10x more. Quality channel, quality content, highly informative and entertaining
I remember reading somewhere when the X5 45e was announced that BMW were considering multiple engines including a 4 cylinder (like in the previous gen 40e) but there wasn’t much difference in economy between that and this 6 cylinder so they decided to go with the bigger smoother engine as they thought customers would prefer it. I’d certainly go for this over the P400e, and would be interested to see how it compared to the Mercedes GLE 350de.
you don't need to have it adaptive mode for the smart hybrid function where you use the navigation. you can just have it in hybrid or eco pro hybrid also as long as you enter a destination in the navigation system . adaptive mode has with the handling of the car, like steering wheel hardness and suspension.
Please don't confuse kW and kWh. When you said "This does more miles per kW" it's like saying "This does more miles per bhp". kW is power, kWh is energy . You also did this in the Land Rover video.
@@NickMusB actually, it's both. fundamentally energy is power applied over time. e.g. X * thousands of watts * 1 hour. batteries store energy. it takes certain energy to move a car that weights whatever over 1 mile. batteries can discharge at a certain rate for given potential, therefore it can also be measured in wh, kwh, ah, v*a*h, whatever
GREAT balanced video as always Harry - try the new Merc GLE 350de PHEV, it has a bigger 31kWh battery and 60 mile claimed EV range, 320hp system output, very comfy ride, but interestingly it is a 4-cly diesel, so on long road-trips you're getting great mpg! And on your "regular commute", press the EV button, stay in EV and you'll never use the engine! You say plug-in hybrids have come of age - whereas the government are banning them in 12 years or so - do you think that a bad call, and will put off people changing to EV? And force road-trip customers to frequent the horrid & ineffective public charging network in their BEV's! Best wishes.
Yes, environmentalists don't want you going on road trips, so are pushing for Plug-In Hybrids to be banned. Greenpeace or whoever, want you on your bicycle! What will happen in America?
dude, I would love that GLE 350de PHEV for my 50 mile round trip commute. I would charge at home overnight, I would stay in silent relaxed EV mode all the time, never run the diesel, never worry about the extra weight I'm carrying around!, never have to visit a repulsive charging station thank you very much, diesel doesn't go off in the tank so easily (modern petrol goes off quickly), never worry if I might need the car at sudden short notice because my unused diesel would suddenly burst into life…! I could even drive it on a Harry's Road Trip to Cannes and back... but hybrids are too expensive... I can't afford a nice new GLE 350de...! Shame...
not necessarily, Hybrids require less maintenance than petrol cars, plus this uses hybrid tech developed in conjunction with toyota... so it may actually be very good to run in a few years..
@@Cynycter How so? I would think you still need to maintain the petrol engine/drivetrain as usual and then there's additional systems that need to seamlessly combine both drivetrains.
These kind of vehicles are made for PCP and buyback schemes. This drivetrain would be compelling in a 'M345e' series with the full 380bhp b58 mill though.......
BMW no longer want you to own their cars. They want you to lease it for a few years, then they sell it as certified pre-owned, then the third owner out of warranty eats all of the expensive repairs. Circa 1995 is the last year of minimal electronics, at least for petrol engines.
@@666louis hose additional systems are not necessarily mechanical... a plug in hybrids petrol engine is far less stressed than a regular ccars... and electric motors have very few moving parts and basically dont require any maintenance... the only real concern is the battery, and most are good for at least 10 years..
A Gentleman Volt was also a series hybrid with a small fuel tank and fwd. Not really comparable to a front engined rwd parallel hybrid that weighs almost 900lbs more.

Saw the test of a TH-camr who drove in EV mode till getting onto the autobahn. The engine clearly was not warmed up, yet revved full on. Surely not good for the ICE. BEV is the way to go, if possible.
@@NicoSteinacker There are two PHEV's I know of that don't have this issue. The Chevrolet Volt and the BMW i3. Essentially range extended EV's where even at full throttle the car is pure electric - with the engine running only as a generator. This is why the Volt has many examples of 200k+ mileages without issue. Tremendous shame there is now not a single such car in production that I know of. Seems a step backwards to me, other than pure BEV of course which is fine but not yet for everyone - these range extended EV's would be the best stepping stone.
MoDo the Mazda MX30 will be the next BEV with Rex. But the car does not sound too interesting besides that. I drove an Ampera (=Volt) last year and was impressed by the quality, ride smoothness and performance. I chose an Ioniq EV instead, because the Ampera has only two back seats and spare parts are getting expensive here in Central Europe.
@@NicoSteinacker yes your right I forgot about the new Mazda. Not a great EV but I suppose looking at it as a range extended EV it is more practical than Ampera or i3 - only it should be considering its relased almost 10 years later!
The best reviews in the business. Thank you Harry. I just don't get the whole hybrid, plug in thing. All that extra weight and complexity and real world 40 mpg. My 10 year old Range Rover TDV8 gets 25 mpg on a run, my 57 year old mk1 Mini does 40+ mpg for the local stuff. I think it's more about cheating the EU CO2 tests.
Thanks for watching. The bit you're missing is that X5 can do way more than 40mpg in real world, even though that was the figure I got after my week wit the car. But I did several long trips that week because while everyone knows it can do most short journeys on electric power only, the real test is how it performs on a 300 mile trip, when it's out of charge for most of the journey. As a result, my week with the X5 wasn't typical usage and I expect most owners in the real world would average north of 100mpg.
I guess the trick as say is recharge these cars at home and fully use the EV range each time/day. Makes more sense. I guess most of these cars will be leased too, so you can renew every few years as the tech moves on. Interesting times.
Klaus Nielsen congrats on getting that car. It is so much underrated due to it’s neither a BEV nor a full on hardcore racer. The three cylinder sound also is amazing in sport mode!
Nico Steinacker it may not be a hardcore racer in the sense of Porsche 918 or La Ferrari but it is a lot faster than all the iHaters think they know! Mine is the Roadster variant but I drive a Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence as a daily and plan to get this X5 45e or the 745 Le later this year.
Excellent as ever, thanks Harry! I didn't expect you to review this but, like yourself, I'm massively intrigued by the potential of this car givent he extended (viable) electric range so was very excited when this video popped up! Really informative, unbiased and "real" review. Sadly out of my budget at the moment but I hope to see more on the road. It also preserves the glorious ICE architecture we car enthusiasts (ahem, petrol heads) adore a little longer. That straight-6 is a marvel. I hope to embrace the new tech in the near future!
Great review as always. Great car for the first and maybe second owners with plenty of money but after say 6 years old I can see these hybrids being very cheap. I couldn’t afford a new or nearly new one and couldn’t afford to replace the batteries or have the engine rebuilt from all the cold short burst running it will have done. The motoring future for petrol heads like me that don’t want to spend the rest of their lives doing complicated mental arithmetic when ‘enjoying’ their drive is bleak 😔 Your lambo for the win every time. Can’t wait to see the next instalment.
Love Harry´s garage - you know what you are doing - I am seeing myself going back to also watch your historic videos. Thank you for providing your great insides! Just saw how EV´s perform in cold conditions on another every day test - Reach decreases from 100% to 69% - fun fact - all of them! Tesla, Zoe and Hyundai - same!
I'd keep the diesel, unless you don't mind worse handling due to added weight and plan to get rid of the PHEV before it gets significant mileage. Turbo petrol BMWs aren't known for reliability in the first place, adding a highly complicated hybrid system on top of that only makes it worse.
Best review of a phev I've seen...... if your doing short journeys they are well worth a look, but if you do a lot of mileage better off with a diesel.
Great video, as always. What sort of cost is involved in having a home charge point installed? Also what is the life expectancy of the batteries? Would these vehicles be an viable second hand purchase in say around 5-10 years?
Same question here, oh BMW guarantees batteries for only 6 years! Be aware! About the charger, not just the cost, but what kind of amperage do you need? Most old houses don't have a lot of room on their breaker boards.
I have a suspicion this situation will not continue. The whole movement of legislation to 2035 is to remove choice and restrict use thereby giving total tax control to the government on transport and fuel supply. Electric tariffs will rise in line with petrol once we are all on the hook only this time no other fuel choice for competition. Your plug charger will be monitored by separate meter and run by local authority or supplier special tariff levy (the cynical additional road tax of cars over 40K EV or not proves the thinking) Enjoy the cost difference while you can it cannot last government revenue is the key driver to all of this hidden behind the mask of ecology improvement.Great vid as always.
Hi Harry, really interesting to see you embracing the eletric bits. Just wants to tell you about this range-extender SUV in China called the "Lixiang One". 1.2T three culinder petrol engine with a 45L fuel tank. 40Kwh battery giving it roughly 85 miles of real-world range on eletric(it claims 110 miles). Twin eletric motors put out about 240kw giving it 0-62 in about 6.5s when the battery is full, 8.5s when the battery level is low. The petrol engine is only there to power the eletric motors. When you are not charging the vehicle and therefore just filling petrol, it does about 30mpg. But when you do charge the battery, you obviously have a huge range of 85miles. It looks like the next step after this. And it has all the attributes of a pure EV: no gearbox, instant full torque at all times.
I am still a strong supporter of serial plug-in hybrids: a simpler powertrain with all the advantages of a BEV but smaller batteries and an internal combustion engine (with decent, albeit not great efficency for seldom long distance travel) . Them not being pointless powerful SUVs would surely help as well!
Great video.. I had the first gen of this car (2016 model) and loved it.. however, it had a 9kwh battery that only got me around 14 miles of electric range.. after an update to maintain battery, my range went down to about 10 miles.. I've since traded it in for a pure petrol 7 series but I'm excited for this new model as I miss being able to drive locally in pure electric and have the gas kick in as needed.. the 600lb of torque is nice as well!
Bob Bolitho Underpowered for what? Being zero emissions in town and getting great economy on motorways? The 2.0 diesel is plenty powerful enough for 99% of situations, add the electric and stick it in a 3 series and it’s perfect.
I don't know. I am really apprehensive about the future of driving. Living on a terraced street it is impossible for me to charge a hybrid or electric from the house. With the future ban on all petrol, diesels and hybrids I feel like I am being punished for not being wealthy enough to live in a place where charging is possible. If it was possible to charge at home then I would be able to adapt to electric. But electrification is only a small part of my future fears. The issues are cars as a service, automation, tracking, automatic speed limiting, and external generated noises when moving that people will change like ringtones. I worry that, because I am not wealthy, I would not be able to own my own car. I wont be able to enjoy the freedom of driving where I want, when I want, when I go on my photography trips. Maybe I am being paranoid. But I love my car, I enjoy driving. It's my freedom. I feel as if this is being taken away from me, and there is nothing I can do about it.

And all the time you were using the rear wiper. Even when talking in the garage.
Nice review
It was also a very noisy rear wiper!
That wiper was driving me nuts.
And Me:- I kept shouting switch yer wiper off. Look in your rear view mirror. Listen 👂
its a BMW.. its already broken
Did my head in too. Would probably have doubled the range if that hadn't been on constantly.
Even a plug-in washing machine is interesting when Harry makes a video
@Antonio Farina Perhaps when your balls drop you'll change your opinion.
17:50 when he floors it and you hear the engine start and immediately go to redline! That just doesn't feel right to me
The engine will be cold and I doubt the oil pressure will be fully reached as well. Really bad for rod bearings as they need to warmed up otherwise they wear out
I think it's because in Sport mode it's already in a lower gear
@@leenevin8451 I believe a lot of these hybrids find ways to keep the fluids in the engine warm, and I know the Mondeo will turn the engine on intermittently to keep coolant temp. Same for stop-start engines, they won't work unless the engine is warm.
noeL I’m aware of stop start. Still don’t trust it
@@dreamcrusher112 unless they have an electric oil pump running before startup, it really isn't great to start and engine and immediately redline it
Nice video Harry :-)
The only problem with this type of PHEV is that if you don't plug it in when you get to your destination, getting back home you're lugging around that great big battery with that great big engine glugging loads of petrol. 🤷🏼♂️
So in mixed driving the petrol engine does a lot of cold starts or doesn't get to its proper operating temperature? That doesn't sound good.
matauboy wouldn’t fancy owning one of these out of warranty
According to the BMW, no wear can be measured.
Old thinking chap! They have it set up not to be a problem...
I think towing ability of this would also be higher than a full EV. Which is a big selling point too for people who tow occasionally or when towing do mostly longer distances. Great video Harry, like always!
I wonder when you come to sell/trade in if you can tell how many miles the engine has done and how many miles it's done purely on Electric?
A good question. I also wonder how the engine will wear as it's potentially activated to work hard from cold with no warming up time.
Good question! Awnser it somebody!
@@Stichting-AAP Thanks for info.
YAY 24kwh Battery that does 40 plus mile real world range. Finally a PHEV SUV with useful electric range. This seems like a great package.

Great video! I love how you explained all the maths of it whilst actually driving.. very impressive and clearly indicates you've done your research and subsequent homework!

This is a double treat as it appears we're also about to get another instalment of the Espada build, i've had worse days 😊
You mean all those which don't come with 12 cylinders... :-)
Great video Harry, would love to see BMW do a 5 Series tourer with this range and maybe a 240bhp engine, think that would be perfect for me!
Answer to why it takes longer to charge...BMW designed it to get charged on home electric...so understandably it would take some time to charge.
Very profesional, as always.

Yes please
For people with a private place to park, its a much better vehicle than a tesla. Totally agree with harry.

One of the few decent reviews. Congratulations!
Please don't confuse kW and kWh. When you said "This does more miles per kW" it's like saying "This does more miles per bhp". kW is power, kWh is energy . You also did this in the Land Rover video.
Actually kwh is capacity. Like miles per gallon would be miles per kwh. But on point from you, many journalists/people tend to get this wrong.
Well you changed my mind Harry, Was going Tesla Model y full electric but that BMW looks awsome, ordering one tommorrow if they have the chips..lol
Shame...
Enjoyable video but the best part is knowing we are just about to get another episode of the V12 rebuild.
Can you do a comparison on this to the Mercedes equivalent please. They seem to be closely matched.
Fantastic ‘H’. Totally comprehensive review of the X5. 👍👏🏻
A great all-round package. I think a lot of people would prefer a BMW straight-six engine over a 4 cylinder! This has the best of both worlds.
Great Review Harry. I have this car in a xDrive30d and LOVE it and always been intrigued by the 45e. Kinda wish I didn't dismiss it now!!!!! EEeeek!
These things are going to be uneconomical to repair at like 7 years old. Super complicated. Plenty of 14 year old E53s still on the road.
not necessarily, Hybrids require less maintenance than petrol cars, plus this uses hybrid tech developed in conjunction with toyota... so it may actually be very good to run in a few years..
Brilliant review! Real clarity, long live black and white. Thank you Harry.
Cool, just make it as a 5 series touring now, BMW.
That would be lovely. But it would have a smaller battery I'm afraid.
A Gentleman Volt was also a series hybrid with a small fuel tank and fwd. Not really comparable to a front engined rwd parallel hybrid that weighs almost 900lbs more.
It’s coming. 545e will arrive later this year 👌
In a 3 series touring would be even better, proper performance plug in hybrid. The 5 series has gotten fat. Its as big as the 7 from a few generations ago.

Great review. Conclusion not what I expected. Love the mix of practicality and enthusiasm!
My question is, with these cars, how do you ensure the engine is warm?
MoDo I can’t belive more manufactures don’t produce volt/ampera like cars
@@harrysgarage Thanks Harry.
I guess the trick as say is recharge these cars at home and fully use the EV range each time/day. Makes more sense. I guess most of these cars will be leased too, so you can renew every few years as the tech moves on. Interesting times.
My 2020 i8 has the same software and yes it works! Mine has only 11,6 but as it’s much lighter it still does 54 km in real life charge.
54km is only 33 miles so much worse than this X5.
The motoring future for petrol heads like me that don’t want to spend the rest of their lives doing complicated mental arithmetic when ‘enjoying’ their drive is bleak 😔
Your lambo for the win every time. Can’t wait to see the next instalment.
After 6 years, that batterypack is toast and the constant cold running engine wouldn't be fairing good.
Love the technical content, sensible mixed in with a couple of "nuts" squirts...sort of how I drive and enjoy myself daily. thanks Harry.
Spot on Harry! Hybrid all the way, no way would I get a straight electric car. Good review
I have the 30d version of this car and it's fantastic. This PHEV looks like my next choice.
Andy but what you really want in a vehicle like this is a diesel hybrid...

I really dont like SUVs but this was a good review !
Best car review I've ever watched. Brilliant. Thank you!
Love the Panda in the Stable!
The best review ive seen, cause he explains every thing ...!!
Think this would make a lot of sense partnered with their 2 litre diesel, which gets great economy on motorways.
That is what the previous generation was and it was underpowered. The smaller battery gave it a range of 11 miles on electric only.
Bob Bolitho Underpowered for what? Being zero emissions in town and getting great economy on motorways? The 2.0 diesel is plenty powerful enough for 99% of situations, add the electric and stick it in a 3 series and it’s perfect.
Great summary at the end. Thanks for showing your workings!
Become rich! :-D
Otherwise yeah, there is no hope for gearheads
Don’t be afraid, hydrogen is the future not electric but it’s a cheaper way to reduce co2 on short notice..
