I have the predecessor X5 F15 and already ordered this new G05. Main reason for loving this power train is the majestical drive in the city with eDrive. Not only very silent but also very responsive. I actually come to see the combustion engine as the helper for the electric motor for higher speeds. All in all a very sophisticated car. - Thanks for your videos!

Thank you Thomas for the review! This car becomes interesting for US city markets because the large battery. In theory a short commute to work can be done in full electric. Charge at home morning then at work during day and you could be using only electric. Plus having the V6 decreases the range anxiety for the long US type road trips a lot of people do for holidays.

for a hybird, I think the battery size makes sense. ~40miles of range is enough for most city trips if you want to go all electric. More adds additional weight and cost

Had been contemplating my decision to swap my 8 months old 40i with the hybrid...I drive approx 70kms daily, mostly through city and urban roads. I’m now feeling more confident that I can cover most of it in pure electric mode alone and can justify the cost of the swap.

My X5 40e 2017 model averages at 2,5 liter/100 km on a daily basis, and is charged only at home. Yearly average is 4 litre/100 km which includes autobahn long distance driving on holidays without charging. 13000km driven per year! Long distance driving in Norway gives 1100km range per tank. Warm interior while waiting or being on the ferry, without any exhaust! Very flexible and comfortable!

Will the driving mode stay on the setting selected or does it default to Hybrid each time you restart? So if Electric is preferred do you have to remember each time to set it? I have a 535e that rather annoyingly defaults to Hybrid every time. Not a deal breaker but looking to upgrade and this will be the icing on the cake.

Great review. Your detailed reviews of the EQC, all the e-trons and this X5 PHEV have been super helpful. We have an X5 diesel now, and it has been our favorite of all time. I have test drove the e-tron and the non-PHEV X5 and your comparison to the 40i was super useful, as I will have to order it sight unseen where I am in Canada if I want to get one. In Canada they are quoting only 30 miles on electric and not the 50 miles you note in the video. I hope it is closer to the 50 you quote...

@@autogefuehl As an update, we've had our X4 45e for almost two months now in the middle of the Canadian winter with temperatures that have reached -40C or worse when the wind chill is considered. This severe temperature reduced our all-electric mileage to around 30-35 km. Also, the electric-only driving mode is not available below about -20C, but it becomes available again in 10 minutes of driving. As another reviewer noted, the US X5's are inexplicably configured to use much less of the battery than the X5's in Europe. I could never figure out why the same vehicle was getting 70-80 km of range in the European videos but was only quoted as 50km in US/Canada. All that considered, the X5 is wonderful and I would buy it again and I love the electric range which is still perfect for most daily commutes. We live out of town and even with a 22 km commute to reach civilization (one direction), we are still averaging l/100km overall in the super compact / Smart Car range (4.7-6) - with a huge luxury SUV! That is in the middle of winter - as it warms up, it will get even better.

As you say Thomas, each to their own. A PHEV with a decent electric range (a bit more than the GLEde PHEV preferably!) would suit us. We like electric drive. We'd charge at home overnight, always avoid horrid charging stations like the plague, and not worry about ironically carrying around our own generator - the engine! I prefer this type of integrated electric drive train PHEV system, not the Toyota & CVT type model. Interesting engineer's info about cold engines in PHEVs. This car (and all PHEV's!) are too expensive! Many thanks, once again, Team.

24 kWh is awesome, but the 3,7 kW charging speed is rather low for such a big battery. 7,4 kW would have been much better.
I would have appreciated if the Electric/Hybrid/Sport buttons were placed on the steering wheel instead of the center console which requires that you lower your eyesight away from the road and take the right hand away from the steering wheel.

Always great reviews, with the straight scoop of pluses and minuses, no matter which vehicle or company......I realize this review is 8 months old, but the 2021 X5 xDrive 45e is just starting to arrive here in the US. The US BMW website shows a full charge will get 30 miles. All the European TH-cam videos give an estimate of 50-55 miles. The UK BMW website gives 54 miles for a full charge. Why does the European BMW's get 20-25 more miles on a full charge? Is this some kind of restriction put on the vehicle in the US? Is the battery smaller (US safety issue)? I can't find any answers. Thanks.

I am seriously considering the X3 30e PHEV. I'd love to see a review of that! People who do a lot of short city driving could use the electric only for 90% of their trips. Depending on the cost differential to the regular X3 30i xdrive, this would make sense. Do you know the difference Thomas?

@kevin n - agree. But the UK configurator says the X3 30e only has a range of "up to 31 miles of pure electric range" - similar to the old Golf & Passat GTE's - which isn't much and will reduce with air-conditioning on etc, or in cold weather. I'd hope for a longer pure electric range from future PHEVs... Cheers.

I'm considering purchasing X5 M50d, but I do go off road, not heavy heavy offloading though, more like driving on sand cos I'm an ardent fisherman so I drive on the beach. So I heard that u can spec your M50d with the air suspension instead of what it comes with as standard equipment, so how does the X5 M50d with air suspension compare to the M50d with the standard suspension that it comes with from the factory?

On 23 September, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. According to the NHTSA report, there are some 4,509 recalled PHEVs in the US, including 2,441 X3 xDrive30e (2020-2021), 1,228 X5 xDrive 45e (2021), and 33 Mini Cooper Countryman All4 SE (2020-2021). According to the real world more stringent EPA rating when battery depleted the fuel economy in MPG gets worse from model year 2018
( 4 cylinder ) to 2021 (6 cylinder )- from 24 MPG to 20 MPG average which translates as a change from 9.8 to 11.78 liters per 100 km. Yes pure EV range increased from 14 to 31 miles which translates as an increase from 22.4 to 49.6 km in real world terms. So it cannot be stated that older and newer cars have the same efficiency. It depends. Older vehicle was more efficient on motorways using petrol, newer one is geared toward city EV use and performance. I would prefer older engine and newer battery together since both versions are less efficient than competition - Mercedes Benz and Volvo comparable PHEVs.
