      @@livinginkevlarCould chuck the ferns on the shelter tarp and lay sticks over it. Stop it flapping/stressing in the wind and help it be more waterproof. Enough leaves and the like over sticks kept on by other sticks can make a waterproof shelter without even needing the tarp.

    Wishing you guys the best of luck. Winter has definitely arrived and a wee dram by the fire and you’ll be as snug as a bug in a rug. Are you on the west coast or further inland? I live near Huntly and it’s bloody Baltic here and when I winter camp or stay in a bothy, I use an artic sleeping bag I got from an army surplus store. £50 and they’re awesome.

    Nice bodge, I have a couple of suggestions to make them a bit stronger if you're interested.
    Triangles are your structural friend, I would add at least one diagonal brace to each face if you get my meaning.
    Add two guy lines to any vertical poles forming triangles, they might be useful on some of the horizontal "beams" too.
    Any loose flappy tarp edges can be tied down - find 20mm'ish diameter stones and fold the tarp around it and tie a knot around the rock and down to a stake in the ground. Also useful if any of the grommets/eyelets get pulled out.
    Buy 100m roll of paracord 550, damn handy stuff.
    Good luck, have a cracking Hogmanay and New Year.

    Great to see how you both go about getting started on your adventure. Yes, at the end of the project you will be able to make a list of the things you've done well and not so well, but right now to are still very much in the early learning mode. Getting things under a cover which only needs to stand up for 2 days is a great first step, but later on a bit more of a wind break might be a useful addition to protect you under the shelter whilst you dine. Some people might choose to buy a garden gazebo, but more eco-friendly people might like to use what they have to harvest from the land. No criticism on my part as it's your choice as to how you progress with your project. Either way, it's fascinating to see you making progress towards your dream home. Will keep watching with interest and best wishes.

    Awesome shelters made! I do worry about them eventually rotting though. Im guessing these are just temporary structures.
    Also, all that pile of old bush clippings etc.. will you be using all that stuff to make homemade compost!?
    Dude if i had that land i would be making a TON of compost to grow my own food.
    You could makeshift some huge greenhouse/pollytunnel on that land.
    I very much look forward to watching the updates.
    Not sure if you are into growing stuff.. but once you start its kinda hard to stop, especially seeing as things can be done organicly, and just helps the environment in general.

    I used to be guardian of 8 acres of woodland in Scotland with the same vision as you but getting planning permission is notoriously hard ..and usually its only given if the land is your source of income like making charcoal ...and then there is the 28 day stay rule too..but you can put a structure on it if it's for tools to maintain the land... Good luck with your planning application, I hope you succeed, but be prepared for disappointment... on the other hand there are a fair few people that do it without permission in ecohouses/round houses made from the materials off the land, while crossing their fingers if you know what I mean ..so its doable if you are careful 😁

    • @TheVeganicGardener
      @TheVeganicGardener 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @nicksammut6406 I don't think that dwelling will count because it's obviously not been lived in or used for probably over a hundred years ..plus it's very small so not a lot of living space!!

    • @livinginkevlar
      @livinginkevlar  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      So although the land is in a woodland it is not part of the woodland and has been fenced off for many years with a access track to it. The dwelling was last used in the early 60s we believe and was upgraded over the years with mains electric and a septic tank installed. We do plan to build a tiny home on the property but that’s all down to planning being accepted 🤞🏼 I hope this helps

      @@livinginkevlarif its any help I got PP on a ruin of a cottage in the Cairngorms, and although the previous commenters are absolutely right that it having been a dwelling previously doesnt give you any automatic rights to reinstate once it is a ruin (generally once the roof is totally gone it loses its dwelling status), it DOES make it a lot more likely that an application for residential development, esp something modest and ideally some kind of reflection of what had been there, will be approved. It’s an easy one for planning, it was a house, it likely has some aspects that they look for (eg mine had a decent well, plenty of garden ground for drainage and an existing access track, with no near neighbours to be affected etc).
      It is always the best chance to get approval to have such a history on the site. Where theres non residential history or worse a greenfield site it is MUCH harder.
      Hope this helps!

      I did much the same with a house in France. Numerous trips down and doing jobs that always took 10x longer than I thought they would, and very little to show for the time, effort, and expense. In the early days I was too caught up in the romantic adventure. When reality dawned I realised that getting builders in was the only way to get it done. A digger and a professional operator can do the job of 50 men in a day. It still took ten years to get it to a liveable state, and it took me another 6 months living there to get the interior completed with a bathroom, kitchen, and complete decorating. 6am-11pm in 35C every single day was back breaking. Lol.

    Think id have used the tarpaulin, all 5 metres of it, to build something around the car. Sure, you need to move the car for supplies, but a semi permanent - big logs in the ground - structure which you can park besides.

    I don't understand why with snow and rain on the way you have not bought a proper tent or small second hand caravan it's Scotland.you could store things underneath. If you get sick you can't work😢 so please think about what you are doing. I love what you are doing I did a similar thing when younger. Going to enjoy watching are we still watching the first video s.

      We are not staying on the land for very long because we are not allowed due to Scottish laws. We have a very nice motorhome already but it needs a new MOT plus some mechanical work to get it back on the road so we decided to use the truck and the roof tent which is a perfectly good tent by the way. We enjoyed every minute whilst we stayed there even if we are cold.

      @ oh okay this is new information 🥰 also understand about Scottish Law. I was only thinking about full on wind and rain taking out your makeshift tents and losing your tools. And also getting sick while there.

    Well, those shelters may not be perfect, but you are learning on the job, and they serve the purpose, seem practical for what you want, so well done! I bet they make a good difference to your lives right now. Sales now on, maybe a moveable shed might be useful too? Just a thought. You are definitely moving forward and making progress. I can’t wait to see the well discovery. Are you allowed to cut down trees if required on your land and do you intend to? I understand if you don’t answer that, as you have not made up your mind yet 😀😀

    Interesting that you need planning permission to occupy the land. Over here , as the site already has a existing building and septic, you could occupy the land as you are “ renovating” the existing building .😁

    • @livinginkevlar

      We only stayed on the land for 7 more days and we left nothing on the land so a shed would be pointless at this stage where a tarp is more useful and cheaper, with that being said I wasn’t prepared to fork out for another tarp so cutting it in half was the best option and both shelters worked perfectly even when it snowed in November and dropped to -8 when all of this was filmed!

      In Scotland you can only stay on your land for 28 days of the year without planning permission so no we can’t do that. The point of us visiting the land is so uncover the old dwelling, service and take important measurements that’s required for planning permission. You will soon see why I built these “pointless tarp shelters” in future videos 👍🏼
