The panties label...the double shooting etc. They would keep all the writers brainstorming for days to come up with those elegant 'blow me away' Columbo clues. The entire show hinged on these details and the writers say it was exhausting keeping up the quality.

Agreed. When you think about, a good defense attorney would destroy many of Columbo's 'gotcha' evidence in court....that is if the killers would just refrain from the need to acknowledge Columbo's genius in catching them at the end of every episode. Sometimes i wish the show was like Matlock where we get to see how the evidence holds up in court.

It always annoyed me that he wasn't charged with attempted murder in the first place. By his own admission he shot his wife whom he believed to be alive at the time, so he claimed. The murder charge gets dropped because she was already dead. Well, he still carried out the actions of a murderer, by his own admission. This should be, by all rights, enough to charge him with attempted murder - because that's what he admitted to, to escape a more serious charge. And why on earth would the victim's sister be with that creep when she knew what he had attempted, knew what he had in him to do?

I hope Brenda Vaccaro didn't hurt Andrew Stevens too much when she slapped him as it was pretty hard. Would have taken a lot of rehearsal & good acting. He was good looking, the son of actress Stella Stevens who co-starred in The Nutty Professor with Jerry Lewis in case no-one is sure who she is.

@Adrian Smith Polaroids have a max resolution of 1580x1580 before they started to suffer noticeable quality degradation from being blown up. The old movie standard of film real has a 4K resolution at max output and that's useful too. It's great for a crime drama when you know that you exploit these resolutions in a case. It's taking some time, but Digital Film has finally started to surpass these resolutions.

This was one of those rare stories that I didn't care for. The murderer wasn't very interesting and the story itself wasn't especially gripping ~ but ~ this ending between Columbo and the other officer discussing women's underwear in a room full of women was just classic
    .
    *Edited*
On a side note ~ the guys reaction after she hits him is priceless.
*She swings hard ~ Punch sound effect ~ the guy instantly snaps back with a surprised look on his face* I giggle every time because it's like he didn't know what to do.

They just led a guy cuffed out of the store after a woman cried "I'll kill you." I doubt two detectives looking at underwear on a mannequin would be worth staring at after that, unless it was because they were already curious about the explanation for what just happened.

Yes, but since it's a behind shot with dialogue by him it makes me wonder about the Audio track where a double sits there as Brenda is fed the questions off-scewwn for her script and then Faulk does the actual question in the sound booth to be added later.
It's an often used shot reverse shot for dialogue depending on the level of drama but it's nomally a head shot from the side or straight on with the other persons back of their head out of focus .
The wall behind columbo must be a fake one to pull back and get the camera in that gap because the frontal shot of him would show the camera .
There's also that carpet that would absorb the sound and the mic would have to be infront of them, this is 1990 when electronics were still a bit bulky . But there is usually a Continuity person on the set with a good memory for retakes and edited scenes and they must have missed this .
I'm just guessing from what I've seen in Studios and location shoots where people have their marks to start a scene and any clocks in view must advance at the same time perspective as the viewer .
I can't see a pro like Peter not remembering that he held the envelope and the cigar at once , a stand-in and junior director would only follow the script that says Columbo has envelope with him as he speaks from chair.
Most of the location Westerns filmed in a sunny dry area void of clouds and far from Airports to avoid contrails from jet planes.

*Mrs Columbo* My husband in a nutshell: view the pilot, and the doctor's psycho-analysis of the Loo and the law of compensation. Dr Freud couldn't have done a better job. The toad peeping out from under a toadstool to opine. Ergo, that's why F felt the need to incorporate motifs: tan trenchcoat (neutral, blend in shade); same ol' tan suit/similar tie (as if his closet only boasted one suit); beat-up, on its last leg, tiny wheels (small car for a small man); and ubiquitous cigar (a security blanket, and the only alpha male prop he had in his repertoire). Both the coat + cigar were crutches: tangible, sensory items to steady him; constant companions to hold hands with when entering and maintaining unknown territory and all eyes were upon him. And, finally, innately - his hair. I called it "the mop" and "the bush" - the only non-law of compensation characteristic that F boasted. The one thing in his life that superficially set him above his peers. F was proud of that fur and often refused to trim it. We all know that hair does not make a man; a man makes the man. Set aside all life crutches including superficial emphases on outer appearances, and the Loo had his one pride and joy: the floppy, overgrown bird nest on his head.
