    (just for the record, schizophrenia does not involve multiple personalities. Multiple personalities are a feature of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and it is EXTREMELY RARE for somebody with DID to be violent! just had to note that. :)

    • @Maninawig
      @Maninawig 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For the record, he did suffer from schizophrenia and not DID.
      Starting chronologically, Noel found Victor after a great trauma (he mentioned talking about being sad) and trauma in pubescent children can trigger the symptoms of schizophrenia to start. As such, both his ventriloquist training and his medical condition would be building their narrative at the same time, and it would not be uncommon for those narratives to merge into Archie.
      However the repressed trauma would start to fester and the subconscious might try to disassociate to protect the psyche. The only difference is Noel has Archie to unload these feelings onto.
      This gives the voices in Noel's head the freedom to express such emotions without a filter. It could also entice empathy for Archie, leading Noel to act in his stead (expressed by how he said "that night I was Archie, but Archie was not me.")
      All this possible cause Archie is that alien voice and not a split of his personality.

    • @marrileemiles3974
      @marrileemiles3974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He created the puppet that wasn't working any more. I don't think schizophrenics need a motive. Just because is good enough for them.

    • @matthewkoch6937
      @matthewkoch6937 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Noel has a clear case of Dissociative Identity Disorder, or as it would have been termed then, "schizophrenia." The puppet would be the embodiment of Noel's self-loathing("I hate you"), despair, and emotional withdrawal(notice how he's much more calm and natural around children than adults). The last conversation with Victor was a cry for help. The dysfunctional, hate-filled part of Noel would feel threatened by Victor and the implied mental help he urged Noel to get. So, the vindictive part of the alternate personality killed Victor to protect itself and to keep the other parts of Noel's personality in line. The murder itself would legally likely fall under "temporary insanity" or "irresistible impulse"-the body acting independently of the conscious mind.

    • @Maninawig
      @Maninawig 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having worked with schizophrenia patients before, I disagree with the DID diagnosis.
      Schizophrenia often unlocks in the psyche (believed to be present but dormant at birth) during a pubescent trauma (like the sadness Noel felt when he first met Victor.) However, this would mean that the voices and the ventriloquist persona would develop at the same time and probably merged to form Archie.
      However, such therapeutic methods do not resolve the trauma, just ignores it... and ignored trauma festers. The subconscious then tried to protect Noel by having Archie live out the grieving, though this leaves such emotions unfiltered. Denial - this is what Noel did to cause the trauma to fester. Depression - Archie no longer wanting to keep the act up. Bargaining - both Archie wanting to break up the act due to the depression, and Noel trying to get Victor to fix things (will mention this later). Anger - or more specifically Wrath at being denied a cure that lead Archie (with schizophrenia, the voices can entice violence in high stress situations) to overwhelm Noel with thoughts of murder. And finally Acceptance, which came when Noel had to admit being caught (dealing with a second trauma as a test-run for the big trauma.
      Where this differs from DID is that the voices (Archie) are not a personal identity, but a separate entity one cannot control... often believed to be someone else. Think A Beautiful Mind or hearing an audiotape that never ends...
      As for motive, that would be self-preservation or survival. Basically, Victor's ventriloquism lessons became a way for Noel to regain sanity, and such a major lifeline was severed when Victor could not reinforce it. So Noel became like a wild animal backed into the corner and lashed out not at Victor, but at his threatening denial in hopes to make it stop. The very definition of temporary insanity even for the insane man.

    Maybe she was the wrong actor for the role perhaps too young. Maybe this was too much like Murder She Wrote without the companion actor, Eg the police officer that is always there to tell her to back off. It's like it was just about OK, but the critics were wrong then and now all we have is 1/8th of the episodes of the number we could have had. Maybe, if they didnt call it Mrs Columbo, and use that premise, maybe just maybe, this would have worked.

      @@seosamhofionnaghain5555 it could have been if they had as I suggested cast a different actor, and not based it on an already working series, especially one that was dead set against having a companion series set against it.
      In more than one episode Columbo makes a reference to it and remarks how fake this 'wife' is. Mrs Columbo was ok, not special, not great, just ok as it was, but you are absolutely correct, today's TV doesn't take much to beat, many TH-camrs are doing better than the big name TV stations and production companies today.
