I remember this episode, "Uneasy Lies The Crown". It was clever that Lieutenant Columbo remembered that Dr. Corman admitted he wasn't good at chemistry. Once again, attention to detail.
When I first saw the title before the show began, I wondered how that fit into it. When Columbo fingered Dr. Corman, I about died of laughter.

Columbo is so relieved because if they had looked, the tooth wouldn't have been stained blue. He got his confession seconds before they discovered his bluff!
Would have been a few more, having his father there slowly extracting it would have been a steady pressure. The demonstration convinced him and he already knew the truth so he broke.

@@midwayinn1043 no, but modern GCMS can detect digoxin (active ingredient in digitalis) at pg/L levels, so a lethal dose, even in a corpse, would still show, and you could do tissue sampling to show that it initially diffused from the tooth, rather than the stomach, which it would have if he had been poisoned conventionally.
This was the first episode of Columbo I ever saw. I was too young to get the whole idea, but the scene where Columbo figures out the poison was coated, and this part where he tricks the culprit, was ingrained in my brain long before I ever realized it was Columbo. My stupid 5yo brain somehow superimposed Joe Pesci in place.
Peter Falk will always be my gateway to detective fiction!

I think if somehow Joe Pesci heard that story he would be honoured of being mistaken for Falk at his best.

This for me was one of the best episodes of the Columbo remakes. The dentist kills the man who was seeing his wife by poisoning him with an overdose of digitalis, the same heart medicine his wife was on, and from her own prescription supply which he stole. That way he could blame it on his wife who was about to divorce him over his gambling addiction among other things. His mistake was adding the poison to the drink bottle after he was dead. Columbo could tell the poison was not in the drink glass when he drank from it thus exonerating his wife. Which left the dentist himself as the prime suspect.
You know when it's arrest time when columbo has his brown paper bag with him😁

I'd bet no other actor in TV history handled more props or did so with this level of expertise than Peter Falk.

I was fooled right till the end. I totally assumed Columbo was pulling out a smoking gun, rather than just using his finger as a pretend gun.
I figured it was a trick--I mean, you can't really make a case with a child's child's chemistry set!--but I had forgotten his "evidence " was so flimsy only someone who had failed chemistry would be fooled by it. Clever bit of storytelling.
@@nolanboles8492 this is bull for another reason. If Columbo were telling the truth , that blue ink would’ve seeped through the dead man’s tooth and into his mouth AT the time of death. Sort of like what happens when you eat colored sugary candy. Hence, the coroners and everyone else who saw the dead body initially would’ve noticed the blue ink and the investigation would’ve begun with that. The dentist is a moron.
This was one of the best Columbo Mysteries. He always found the biggest weakness and/or source of vanity to trap his suspects. This one was classic, as even I knew that he was bluffing but because the killer didn't know his stuff... however.. his retort to his wife at the end.. on some level he really believed that and that is worse...

What made Columbo such a great show wasn't trying to find out who did it. It was watching Columbo figure it out and paint the murderer into a corner.
Now that I'm a defense lawyer, I look back at these Columbo episodes and find the flaws that would kill a case. Still, I find enjoyment in so many of these episodes. It has a very comfortable clam chowder, burger and fries kind of feel.
True. I think according to the writers who write Columbo episodes, they don't write them so he has to gain a conviction in court against the murderers. They write them to make for a good TV show from his fans point of view where they can see Columbo follow up clues and catch the onscreen killer who kills near the beginning of every episode.

Usually the evidence Columbo brings up is flimsy at best, but usually his perk is so broken from his constant mind games they just confess at the end.
However he does it, the Lieutenant always gets a confession!!! 🤯

This one was surprisingly the simplest outcome for a Columbo episode that I can remember. Peter Falk of course made it work as always.

A lawyer wouldn't be much good in this case as the murderer was caught on camera earlier on in this episode committing the murder..

I will always love how confident the murderer is like “wow this guy is such a fool, he can’t find me out” before they absolutely get demolished.
I've watched every single episode of Columbo. No matter how many times I see any of his episodes, like this one, I laugh in anticipation and enjoy the moment like I did when I first saw them.

The series M.A.S.H. did a similar thing to catch a barracks thief: the prime suspect was told that the stolen items had been dusted with an invisible powder that would stain the culprits fingers purple.

Columbo never has enough evidence to convict, but the killers always crumble and confess.

@@DeathnoteBB See those two chatting? Usually when you're in background you'll mouth "peas and carrots" to your new friend. Plus another thing you won't be able to stop seeing...... Make a count of how many times you see the same person walk back and forth. Doesn't matter if it's in this show or any other, you'll have the same group of people get ping ponged back and forth. And had I said nothing you would have never noticed.

Another case the great detective could get his teeth into! 🙄 It was a novel way of committing a murder, and he might have got away with it, had it been an ordinary detective on the case!

Columbo can always extract a confession, filling in the details and crowning it with a incisive reveal that drills through the suspect's alibi and results in them spitting out an admission of guilt.

I am so glad these were movies not real life because despite the arrest, none of these would stand up in Court because defence would easily shred that trick.
I would never have admitted to it until seeing the proof.

This is one of my favourite episodes certainly in my top 3. I like Columbo Cries Wolf because of the fact that for 95% of that episode Columbo is wrong. I suppose rounding out my top 3 would be Swan Song because of Johnny Cash. I also love Patrick McGoohan’s Oscar Finch and Jack Cassidy never turned a dud performance.
Thinking about it, Columbo is obviously Peter Falk and his flawless portrayal but there are so many superb guest stars supporting him, I think every episode is superb.
Columbo is a GENIUS at solving homicide cases!
His dad looks so smug to see him arrested for murder.

I prefer it when he finds the evidence and wins that way, not when he tricks them. I'm not opposed to tricking as a general rule, but the outsmarting through detective work is why one tunes into Columbo.

Not entrapment at all. Entrapment is when a police officer tricks or coerces someone into committing a crime so they can be prosecuted for it. Columbo didn't coerce him to commit murder or any other crime.
@@davidalexander3320 OK, it's not entrapment. But it could be considered a coerced confession since it was made in response to Columbo's lie. The defense could thus ask the court to rule the confession as inadmissible: if convicted, it could be grounds for an appeal. It's great for TV. But it's legally problematic IMO. And that's before considering that Columbo never Mirandized the guy.
Nope, wrong again. It is perfectly acceptable for the police to lie to a suspect. He didn't have to read the Miranda rights, the suspect wasn't under arrest, nor was he until AFTER he disclosed he was the guilty party. Then you read him his rights. Everything he said before is perfectly admissible, there were four witnesses. @@JohnDrummondPhoto

This ending scene just proves that Columbo is just faking stupidity and is actually a fullblown genius with him having faked the test, to him pretending to scratch his head and go “Laundry detergent? Why I be!” 😂 *i fricking love him*

Love this episode & even loved they explained about those pills with all the different colours and beeds. In UK remember seeing them as a kid and being fascinated by them buy lucky not stupid enough to eat them. This is one of my fav later episodes. Always thought if only the guy hadn't said "Just leave it" Columbo wad very lucky with his bluff but then again we know Columbo knew him well enough that he knew he could get away with the bluff.
Another reason I like the episode is they have the old coffee machines I used to see here in the 80s & shows the reason they used to scare me. What would happen if they failed and just didn't stop pouring the drink :)

Of course in modern days this would be a bit too flimsy to hold up in court, but I always loved Columbo. RIP Peter Faulk.
A lot of his evidence was flimsy 😅. But your right, I did enjoy Columbo, mainly the 70s episodes.
I don't quite understand people's fixation on 'in court' with Columbo. This isn't the case he would put to the DA. There's the general though this gets them the arrest and all the warrants they need to scour this guy's life and history and build an iron case for court. Murder trials can take years after all.
@@keirgomcginlay2044 Well, just saying that in reality where we live virtually none of these cases would have held water. Most DAs probably would not even allow a lot of them to go to trial for lack of any actual evidence. Don't get me wrong, I love Columbo and I think Peter Falk is one of the best character actors of all time (check him out in "Murder by Death" too).

And I do understand, I'm just saying that I don't think they go to trial based on the end of the episode. I think they're just able to arrest the guy and get to work getting all the necessary evidence for a trial together.
Also the artistic liscence of all crime fiction. 'This would actually take at minimum weeks to get through, but that would kill the pacing.' =p
EDIT: Additionally, this actually gets touched on when a man confesses to a murder to spare his mentally ailing friend, and they talk about the months it will take to straighten out.
He did say "What I did was no worse than what you planned to do" in front of a room of witnesses...

This Ep - aired this past week. Thought, I watched it more than 50 times. .
Love the camera angle on that conversation during the chemistry set part, Columbo was panned slightly down, and the killer you were looking up at him. Felt like you were standing in a circle with them. And the picture, so real, so rich. Even at 144p it's clear, a F1 video at this setting you can't see the cars in above shots and most of it is blurry squares.
This father must have had a life time of wanting this, that was cold, he actually enjoyed him being found guilty.
I was about to make a remark about the confession being obtained under false pretense, but there is nothing saying that an officer ~can’t~ lie in order to get a confession. They just can’t force one out of you or use intimidation tactics or coerce
The dentist felt his deception unravel and volunteered the confession on his own. Though I will say that this one felt a little over the top. Usually Columbo will have a firm grasp of what happened and use that to exploit a suspects poor judgment or overconfidence, but here it was more about luck
If LAPD had Columbo in real life around 1994, Johnnie Cochrane wouldn't have been able to save OJ.

Yes, that is a valid point...however, it should be noted, these are amateurs and not professional killers . . . and as such make rookie mistakes.
Guilt is also hard to bear. From a logical perspective you can see how to get around it... if you aren't suffering a storm of emotions at the time.
Well, the husband was a moron bc even though Columbo had enough circumstantial evidence, that blue dye would have leaked all over the dead cheater’s mouth at the point of death. Therefore, none of this nonsense and no need to exhume the body in the first place!

His own father (he called him 'Dad') lets a lie stand when his son is under investigation - really? And his wife acts insulted when she was having an affair that her husband knew about - really? And, as ever in Columbo episodes, the killer confesses without keeping schtum and asking for a lawyer, and when confronted with an amateur chemistry experiment.
There's so much wrong with this, it hurts. As ever with Columbo, it all rests on the killer confessing everything when bluffed, whereas a real killer would not confess at all and would wait for court.

I'm starting to think that there are hidden episodes of Columbo where he latches onto the killer and all the evidence points to that killer and they did it .. and Columbo arrests them...and the episode doesn't air ..

Watching Columbo every day i am 63 something that many people may have missed its when COLUMBO said "i have digitalis here that Dr Johnson gave me" is that the DOCTOR was so surprised that if the dentist could read body language would instantly know that Columbo was actually lying

Love the mystery movie theme composed by Henry Mancini. However as a child it did kind of scare me. The silhouette of that man carrying a flashlight walking towards the camera. And the eerie sound of the theme playing.

Christ on a Crutch, what the hell happened to entertainment media? I remember watching stuff like this as a kid (early 2000s) on daytime TV and being enthralled not by the plots obviously, but by how well the characters all played their roles, their enthusiasm and dedication. And then prime time would roll around and we'd all gather to watch men get kicked in the balls and eat bugs on big brother friday night live.

It's a good thing that Columbo knew enough about George, the Coroner (perfectly played by Steven Gilborn), to know that he'd keep his mouth shut while Columbo pulled his chemistry trick on Dr. Wesley Corman (also perfectly played by James Reed). Columbo obviously didn't fill George in on what he was going to do with his Chemistry experiment, given his look of mystification. But, George, knowing Columbo's personality and reputation well, knew to keep his own chemistry knowledge to himself. When Columbo did this, there was a bit of a risk that George might say something that might tip Wesley off. But it's not out of place here for Columbo to take certain risks because Columbo was actually an exceptional psychologist as well as a detective, having a sound understanding of what makes people tick and what they might do (or not do) under certain circumstances.

Did anyone notice @ 4:16 the actors nose started running? You can even see the stuff coming from his nostril and hear him sniffling.
i don't think a dentist could really know if digitalis turns enamal blue or not. to get into dentistry degrees, ones needs a strong chemistry base. But i really doubt students know stuff like that, unless they had read it. But it makes a good story.
What I don't understand is why there was not an immediate autopsy of the body after it was discovered? A good medical examiner would then have discovered he was poisoned with an overdose of digitalis. If it happened in a dentists office then the dentist would be the prime suspect.
The medical examiner did examine the body and found enough digitalis in the body to kill him so concluded it was no accident but murder.
