He made physical pain look so funny but it resulted in addiction to prescription painkillers. Ouch! Thank God the man is alive and sober. I may be a Millenial but he's one of my favorite comedians ever.
It often seemed that Chevy was never comfortable simply being himself. He always needed to find the joke, or say something funny. I believe this is one of those times where it underserved him. Although it’s possible that he was just nervous and/or on cocaine. Regardless, he remains a legend of comedy, and has earned it.
People love to bash Chevy (for years now) but, don’t forget, the dude was funny as f@ck - made some great movies from the mid-70s until the early 90s 🎙
Generally, a lot of the Carson clips that have shown up on TH-cam lately are from the shows being run on AntennaTV the last couple years . One easy way to tell is that the playout music when a guest is introduced is generic newer music added in by AntennaTV because they don’t have the music rights to use. The bad thing is that you almost never hear the original band with Doc Severinson other than at the beginning when Johnny comes out for the monologue. That appears to be the case here, too.
His first appearance on Carson, and only a year with SNL. He's just a kid at this point and seemed actually nervous to me. He is one of my favorites, best role ... Ty Webb in Caddyshack!
His ego was already the size of Texas and he had cemented a reputation within the industry as a bully and impossible to work with. Carson and other veterans were irritated by his sense of entitlement on such a limited body of work and having the network eating out of his hand in trying to position him as the next Carson and biggest star ever.....He fell far short of that mostly by his own doing and resented the success others went on to have.
@@KalOrtPor I've heard all about Chevy Chase being hard to work with, and being a bit egotistical, but I still think he gets too much hate, he did have a solid career. The man was brilliant in just 1 year at SNL, and after leaving SNL and moving to LA, he started having instant success in Hollywood films (With virtually no experience). The thing with Chevy Chase is, that 1983 National Lampoons Vacation film was such a success and a Home Run, that people started to identify Chevy Chase as the true bonified comedy (Loser, that screws everything up) so that became his identity and he just continued playing those kinds of characters. If we're just talking comedy, not overall acting or playing a variety of characters, just comedy, Chevy Chase to me is way funnier than guys like Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Martin Short etc etc etc. The only reason people give him such a hard time, is because he never kissed anyone's you know what, and he did things his way, even today.
@@KalOrtPor Good memory - NBC was pushing him to replace Johnny! There were rumors that Johnny would bail to ABC and they were grooming Chevy to take over. You could see in the interview Carson isn't very happy w/ some of the antics Chevy's pulling.

lol. Chevy Chase was one of the funniest people ever. Be sure to watch National Lampoons Vacation & Christmas Vacation. Probably 2 of the best comedies of all time. He was great in the early days of SNL & even as an old man in the TV show Community. Chevy Chase is hated because he's apparently very irritable, arrogant, & as I understand it just disrespectful in general to the people he has worked with over the last few decades. All that being said. I love Chevy Chase & he is one of the greatest comedic actors of all time & I don't think it's up for debate.
@@brucewayne2184 If you were one of the actors who worked with him I think you would say otherwise. Being funny (which he is) doesn't make you a kind person.
For pure pratfalls without the fanciness of chaplin - John Ritter was best imo. Michael Richards was genius for that too. Even Chris Farley took a great fall and you didn't see too many fat guys doing that cuz it's hard to laugh - but Chris made it work.
I think it was a very awkward interview. I don't know if it was just me but part of me wanted to keep watching and the other part wanted you flip to another video. Chevy was really annoying.
NBC wanted Chevy to replace Johnny ASAP. Chevy became an overnight success and NBC was looking to bank on it. They basically had him taking over the tonight show and rumor was Johnny would leave for ABC. But it all blew up in the exec's and Chevy's faces.
Chevy had done interview year before this making fun of Johnny and Chevy was doing nbc special so basically exec’s at nbc had told them to play nice so yeah awkward interview overall.
He probably would've crashed and burned just as wildly then as he did in 93.....All the turmoil with the late night shakeup was the best window for anyone to succeed, he couldn't even finish a 2nd month. Johnny was both amused and relieved watching the hole he was digging himself here, feeling insulted Chevy had implied the job was beneath him and the network's continued pandering to him. But Johnny held too much sway at NBC and in the industry to let it happen before Chevy would burn enough bridges and executives came to their senses.
It's even worse when his ego takes over after Richard Pryor comes out, he couldn't stand no longer being the center of attention so he constantly interrupted them and kept trying to make the show about him. Carson and Pryor both paid their dues over the years getting to where they were and found his entitlement and lack of respect insufferable.
I loved the role he did as Clark Griswald and the role that Randy Quaid did as his cousin Eddy in those Vacation comedies!!! HILARIOUS!!!!
