Just did! Just for you know, you can. BUT... Use SAME brand and SAME speed. If everything goes well, the MB might still recognize both sticks as dual channel, which was my case (16gb + 8gb Kingston Fury 2666Mhz).

Yes, to get the speeds you still need to match the frequency and timings, but you'll always get the capacity if they're both compatible with the motherboard

You literally didn't cover the question in the title... can you mismatch the capacity, if you keep speed the same, does that effect anything?

  • @bloomelo

For those wondering if mixing RAM with different capacity but same clock speed and latency is fine :
Your RAM will run in Flex Mode, meaning it will still run in dual channel and a portion of the RAM run in single channel.
For example : 8 GB + 4 GB RAM = 4 GB + 4 GB will run in dual channel, and the remaining 4 GB from the 8 GB will run in single channel. Single channel means the remaining 4 GB will run in lower performance compares to the dual mode one.
BUT from my research, someone said that actually Flex mode's dual channel is (arguably) still losing by a bit in performance compares to its pure dual channel counterpart. I don't know if it's true.
To be safe : make sure that you have the same capacity, clock speed, latency etc.
But if you can't, you'll still be benefited from the Flex Mode's dual channel although the performance might possibly be not as optimal as the pure dual channel mode. Would love to hear anyone's experience on this. Regardless, running in Flex mode is still MUCH better than having a single ram running in single channel.
But keep in mind Flex mode only works for modern motherboards.

A bit late but, does the Gigabyte H110m-h motherboard support flex mode? I can't seem to find the answer by looking at the motherboard's specs...

I'm thinking of picking up 2x32gb ram sticks 3600 mhrtz to add to my pc that's already running 2x16gb 3600 mhrtz. Going to be the exact same manufacturer just higher memory variants. Currently running the 2x16gb sticks in dual channel. In theory they should run fine as they'll be the same speeds 3600 mhrtz, and same manufacturer, but wanted to get others' opinions. What do yall think? Will this setup run fine together?

@@madaragog2689 The thing is, with running this configuration (flex mode), you will get the full speed for the 2x16 stick, but the other 2 will run in single channel.... look it up, I been wondering about this too so I did a little research, it's sad that it does this.. as for the performance impact, not quite sure, but as you will have 2x16 (32) at full speed, the impact should be minimal, UNLESS, you want to do stuff like he mentions editing or 3d software or some very specific games that are memory hungry, but it's hard to imagine a game that make use of beyond 32gb, ..(I wouldn't be surprised if an odd game like factorio for instance would be affected somehow)
But you should also know this : 8gb is single rank 16gb kits is dual rank, you get slightly better perf running dual rank, especially with zen 4 (non 3xd I would imagine), but if you run 4x8gb, suddenly it becomes dual rank, it's quite tricky, not sure about the real impact with other architectures than zen4 but there are tests out there.

here is the right answer for all of you guys
Yes, two different capacity RAM modules with the same brand, frequency, and timing can work together, but there are considerations:
    *Compatibility:*
    1. Same brand: Recommended, but not mandatory.
    2. Same frequency: Essential (e.g., both 3200MHz).
    3. Same timing: Important (e.g., both CL16).
    4. Dual-channel support: Check motherboard manual.
    *Potential Issues:*
    1. Reduced performance: Mixed capacity modules may run at lower speeds.
    2. Increased latency: Different capacities might cause timing discrepancies.
    3. System instability: Incompatible or mismatched modules can cause crashes.
    Specifics:*
    1. Dual-channel support: Yes
    2. Recommended RAM configuration: 2x8GB or 2x16GB for optimal performance
    3. Compatible RAM speeds: Up to 3200MHz (OC)
    *RAM Module Compatibility Check:*
    1. Brand: Same or compatible (e.g., Corsair, Kingston)
    2. Model: Similar or identical (e.g., Corsair Vengeance LPX)
    3. Frequency: Same (e.g., 3200MHz)
    4. Timing: Same (e.g., CL16)
    5. Voltage: Same (e.g., 1.35V)
    *Tools for RAM Compatibility Check:*
    1. CPU-Z
    2. RAM Identifier
    3. AIDA64 Extreme
    4. Motherboard manual
    *Before mixing RAM modules:*
    1. Check motherboard manual for specific guidelines.
    2. Consult online forums or support groups.
    3. Ensure warranty and support from the RAM manufacturer.

    Great informative video guys.
I was running 16gig of HyperX 3200 ram in my system, but decided to upgrade to 32gig, So I bought 32gig of 3200 T-Force Vulcan Z ram at a good price. My wifes work pc also had 16gig of ram. I thought she had the same brand of ram as my 16gig I just changed out, but alas, it was a diff brand, Corsair, but all the other specs were the same. I'd did some research on ram compatability, and found I might get lucky & I could use them together. I stuck my old 16gig ram in her system, and it works just fine. It's been in there for around 8 months now, and she hasn't had an issue. Btw, all the ram is DDR4, which I had heard was a very much hit & miss with mixing ram. I guess I got lucky. :)

Im not completely agree with some statings in the video. If you use sticks with mismatching FACTORY DEFAULTS, that doesnt mean you cant set em' up in the bios as matching specs. The factory speed and timing doesnt really matter, since every memory stick can work on countless different setting, so you just set them up in a way that both sticks can work on.
Actually I have 2x2666 and 2x3000 sticks, so 4 sticks, and i can run them on 3000mhz with my custom timings without a problem, however these sticks are completely differ given the factory specs.

Hi, I bought 2 nos of HyperX NA DDR3 8 GB (Dual Channel) Laptop, PC (Fury 8GB DDR3 1866MHz CL10 DIMM Desktop Memory (HX318C10F/8)) (Blue). They seem to be working only when I add a 3rd pc of another make. I tested them in all slots. But still wouldn't show. I have shown this to a couple of technicians here. Any advice please.

comp will run in flex mode. Some the Ram wil be dual channel and portion will be single channel. Computer will just say "Dual channel" which is only half the truth.

I was told that if you want a four stick RAM configuration then you should buy all four picks as a package as the manufacturer has "matched" the set. And, if you start with two sticks of RAM, then buy two more of the exact same model from the same manufacturer (i.e.the same part number), then they may not necessarily be "matched". Is that just crazy talk? It sounds like crazy talk.

    • @ThermaltakeAustralia
      @ThermaltakeAustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's not crazy talk! There's some truth to that, however, while it's best to buy 4 of the same brand and type in the same package - it's still totally okay to pair up separately too. In actual fact, it's actually better to get the capacity that you want in two sticks rather than four. I.e. if you want 64gb, then it's best to go with 2x32gb instead of 4x16gb. 😊

@@ThermaltakeAustraliaokay but what if I have 2x16, just bought 2x32.. in what configuration can someone use all 4 sticks and what are the tradeoffs?
      1. Capacity - doesn't seem like it should matter?
      2. Frequency - all ram will just run at the worst spec of the pairs? So 2x16 @3200 with 2x32 @3600 will all only run at 3200 (possible bios tweaks but just assume this)?
      3. Latency - do these run similar to frequency? As in you'll just get the worst between the two or are they not compatible at all if not very close? Where's the tolerance?
      4. Slot vs spec / capacity considerations - pending how the above Qs work; id assume just put the biggest capacity pair into the 'right' (2 & 4 always?) slots?
