    The thing about this movie is that it stands out from other superhero films. When you have superhero movies, it's usually either lighthearted and comedic or dark and depressing. This movie shows "realism" to what would happen if a real life superhero existed. One example of realism is that he can't save everybody but he still does the right thing because he feels responsible to. Love this movie.

    • @Nortarachanges

    One more thing I love about the ending is that the music which plays when David defeats the Orange Man and completes/accepts his role as the hero is the music which plays when Elijah finally completes/accepts his role as the villain. The use of what was David's triumphant and good willed theme furthers the mixed emotions of triumph and distain we feel towards Elijah at the end. I love it.

    • @kimberlyhaines107
      @kimberlyhaines107 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Corn Pone Flicks I still think he is. Think about it, some of his first films were considered ground-breaking and brilliant, not something every director has. So when he has one some consider a clunker, it sticks on his reputation a lot harder and longer. But he also gets redeemed as well as I’ve seen more and more people change their opinion on “The Village”, which I always loved. Real, honest to bad movies he’s had very little, he just has every new release compared to his early films that blew people’s minds. Hence why I think films like “Glass” would have had better scores/reviews under another person’s name.
      And I still think “Glass” got somewhat unfair reviews because it was released at a time when the MCU dominated everything, and it was released before “Joker” - and “Glass” and “Joker” I find very similar in how they approach a comic book movie, where the focus is on the characters more than anything else. And I honest to God think in the years to come that this trilogy will be respected as how “comic book” movies can still be higher art cinema without all the flashy special effects, or goofy superpowers a superhero may have...It’s a refreshing span of movies for Marvel and DC burnout.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, his actual first two films, which no one ever talks about, didn't make much of a splash...his first movie was seven years before The Sixth Sense. I never liked Signs-I thought the whole premise was positively ludicrous, but I did like the Village, if not nearly as much as this one, most for Bryce Dallas Howard's performance. I didn't like anything else from him until Split, and then Glass, which I also enjoyed. I'm hoping he's caught his second wind; more good movies is always a good thing, and his visual sense is beautiful even when his stories don't work. I've often wondered if he would ever direct a script written by someone else.

      i've loved everything night's ever put out, with the exception of airbender. the village is absolutely my favorite, and i will forever defend the happening. (i truly and honestly think that had other actors been cast, it would've been MUCH better. the two leads were so corny, and that wasn't even a result of the writing. they just *were*. mw can't pull off a character who isn't swearing left and right, and zd's performance was so flat. ugh.)

    turns 20 today!
    Another success by M. Night Shyamalan.
    The reception was lukewarm and it didn't pass the $100 million mark at the box office. But now it's recognized as one of the more early superhero flicks. We didn't know at the time Shayamalan was creating his own universe. More of a moody comic book like drama with a slow burn.
    Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are stupendous. I like Robin Wright Penn a lot.
    It's good because Shyamalan helped developed the shaping of modern comic book films to come.
    This one though focuses more on the characteristics of the heroes without resorting to flashy tropes like capes, costumes, mustache twirling villains or big end of the world scenarios. Feels more grounded in its own reality. A heck of a twist ending that ties everything together.

    This is easily my favourite Bruce Willis performance. I love Die Hard. Die Hard is great. And Bruce was made to play imperfect, human heroes. He's like a more human Sylvester Stallone in his movies. I can't help but feel sorry for both of them. They know how to play sad men. But, even if nobody knows how to shake me fundamentally through his words like Sly ("Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! ...", "It ain't about how hard you can hit. It's about how much you can get hit, and keep moving forward! How much you can take and keep moving forward! ...", ...), Bruce doesn't need big speeches. In a way he'll always remind me of my father. And that's how i want to be to my child one day, when my wife and me get lucky (hopefully soon). The best thing about this movie is how real his struggles feel. The moment where he tells his wife about his nightmare is so beautifully tied up in the carrying Audrey scene. I hope I'll never end up with my wife in a similar spot like them. But if we do, I hope we can save it in a similarly satisfying way.
    God, this movie is good.

      That really was the point of the Nolan Trilogy, it was grounded in reality, and for every reason could honestly exist in real life if you had the resources. Even a lot of the MCU is like that, things like the Iron Man suit is somewhat based on science, the only thing that is strange is the arc technology, since it’ll be a very long time until we can safely harness that energy on a significant scale

    • @goji253
      @goji253 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lucienreles2321 Yeah or the fact that there would be no system to cool it down efficiently. Or that Tony would be turned to mush by some of the hits he is taking.
      The MCU is really good at easing us into its absurdity. Making things somewhat believable at first but then going more and more ridiculous without you really taking notice. And before you know it you went from weaponised armours to magic space metal, kings of secret nations and gods.
      But don't confuse their ability to make things believable with actual realism.

    I never get tired of this movie (or this review). For a long time, I struggled with the idea of which character was the most "important" to this movie. But as you said, the movie doesn't work without either of them. They are both the most important.
    I think Bruce Willis did a great job, but I agree with you that Samuel Jackson was just off the charts in the final scene. The complete mixture of joy and grief when he declares himself as Mr Glass - I think it is in that moment that Elijah actually goes insane. His life's dream was fulfilled and handed to him, only to realize that he's the villain. Elijah didn't want to be a villain, and he rationalized that finding David justified any act on Elijah's part. Then he realizes that it didn't, that he's been granted his heart's desire via the blood of innocents.
    David has a similar transition - he gains a fulfilling role, but with that the knowledge of how many more people he can't help. Also, he had to be feeling some guilt over Elijah's actions, even though he wasn't responsible for them. I'm guessing he carried that guilt for the rest of his life, constantly needing to "earn" the fulfillment he's getting because it came at so high a price (Price).

    Thank you for giving a bunch of wins to that father-son scene. It seriously made me tear up just thinking about it. It's so fucking touching, and... It's weird to say, but it feels so REAL.
    It's a scene where a father tells his son that he's a superhero. That shouldn't be able to be portrayed realistically, and yet... The emotions of that scene feel more real than 99.99% of scenes in all films in history.
    Maybe you'll do it later, but so far you haven't mentioned how amazing that kid is. Seriously great acting. Not just great acting for a kid, great acting. Period.

    • @bronsoncarder2491
      @bronsoncarder2491 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LMFAO HOLY SHIT!
      There is a typo in those credits. You mentioned that lady's last name was Inverso. Right above that is the listing for the young Bruce Willis, who I had noted earlier as being a pretty decent young Bruce Willis. I decided to look up "David Duffield" and found out... It's actually "Davis Duffield." lmao

    • @bronsoncarder2491
      @bronsoncarder2491 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I gotta do a third comment. lol
      I never saw it as Elijah giving up anything. His heart is broken, because he thought he was the hero, and it turns out he's the villain. But, he also knows who he is. He can throw away the trappings of the normal life he pretended to live and embrace the villain that he was always destined to become... From his point of view.
      "Now we know who I am..." is such a powerful line. Heartbreaking and triumphant at the same time. And, you're right of course, that Samuel L. "Motherfucking" Jackson just runs a masterclass in that scene. I don't know that anyone else could really have done that the same kind of justice.
      Finally, there's the thing you bring up twice, that I had never thought about before:
      What if David Dunn is alive?
      Even just saying that gives me the excitement shivers.
      It would be the perfect Shyamalanian twist. Set up flawlessly, and executed... Competently. lol Because you're right, that story does imply that, while David is weak to water, and it can kill him, once he's away from it he heals.
      And, frankly, that would excuse a terrible ending to an otherwise great film. I think we were all a little confused about the end of Glass... and now that I think about it, that confusion only really makes sense in the context of a larger twist. As you said, "the best twist is the kind where nothing else would make sense." (Or something like that)

    Just want to point out that the cartoon around 10:45 is an episode from the 1998 Powerpuff Girls show. It's about a female villain who disguises herself as a normal, kind woman to (in lack of a better term) seduce the Professor in an attempt to force the girls to entirely stop using their superpowers in order to get away with her own villainy. It's the disguised version showing some of her true colours in the clip. The episode is called "Mommy Fearest" if anyone wants to check it out, or look up a more detailed plot synopsis.

The film has some pretty great qualities that call for an EGA. Like the way some of the human characters mirror the mythological ones, such as Ben and Saoirse's dad and Mac Lir who are both voiced by Brendan Gleeson. And the animation was stunning, some scenes even reminded me of Hayao Miyazaki. Easily one of my favorite animated films.

We bonded, I told her what I'd grown up to enjoy, and comics was one of the things. She sent me this movie, and by this point, I knew M. Night more for crappy twists and garbage like the village and lady in the water, and the happening.
