The Smart is very successful here in Germany or generally Europe. Our Main Streets are not even as wide as your side roads and most of the residents have to drive round after round around the block to even find a parking space in most cities. I think the SMART is just not useful in the US.

@@amandahuginkiss4098 Makes sense, but it is cheaper for car companies to install AC on all cars than to keep them off of relatively small number. It is the same reason that manuals are almost all gone in USA.
I got a Mirage as a rental car with a vacation package. What a miserable car. The acceleration was dreadful, the handling sucked, the interior was cheap looking and uncomfortable, and I felt like it was way too small, like I was being squashed by the thing, even though I'm not very big or tall.
My friend bought a used BMW. I said, "You do know that BMW means Broke Man Walking, right?" He wasn't laughing. 🤣 He's only had it a couple of months and has already been to the shop for a few things.
I think you guys are missing the boat on the BMW 3 series GT. Because it's based on the long wheelbase version of the 3 series otherwise only available in China, it has a ton more rear legroom than a standard 3 sedan or wagon with barely less cargo capacity than the 3 wagon. Plus the long wheelbase gives it way better proportions than the 5 Series or 6 Series hatchbacks.
I owned an Aveo, and yes it was bad. My Fiat 500L has been a really good car; it's not for everyone. If they had changed the styling and sold it as the PT Cruiser; it would've been more successful.
I really like my 2014 Honda Crosstour with V6 AWD, and I picked it over the Accord. It has plenty of headroom and comfy seating, rides decently, and performs well. The biggest drawback is the severely sloped rear which hinders visibility and restricts capacity. That's where the Toyota Venza one-up'd it with the more sensible back end. This was another case of Honda losing interest in a vehicle and never updating it until it just died.
It's ugly. Nobody likes ugly. I can remember watching them gather dust on the dealers lot. They'd have a handful of accords, a few passports, a CRV or two, and an entire row of Crosstours.
@@James-pq5uf I will admit the styling is weird and when I first saw them I was turned off. But I see a number of them in my area of S.W. Ohio, and most people who own them enjoy them. I think the quirky looks will make them unique to own in the future, kinda like an AMC Pacer, lol.
The Smart is actually a great and cheap car. Transmissions were crap? I had a first generation automatic and third generation manual - far from being crap, especially when I compare them to some more expensive cars from e.g. Ford.
i have a friend with a Shart, errr Smart and the transmission crapped out. the only way to fix it is to send it back to Germany which would cost more than the car is worth. it's nothing but a worthless yard ornament now.
T 15 good deal up course. Just add a couple of thousands of dollars to get a contract with an automotive shop or make sure to include roadside assistance when you buy it. Nothing against Mitsubishi, just that the mirage is not a recomendable car to buy.
You missed the mark on the BMW 3 GT. It actually had a lot more leg and head room than the 3 series, more like the 5 series, and the hatchback was super convenient and flexible. It also looked a lot better than the 5 GT.
I was driving a rebuild flood car and no one would take it for trade . I shopped it around and found a jeep dealer that would take it against a 2013 patriot (new car leftover going into 2014)sport so i took it . The car has actually been a very good car i still have it . I am mechanically incline so i do take car of it more than most . Ive had no problems with it . Ive done the spark plugs and brakes and change the cvt fluid every 30k . I drove it for two years and my wife has had it ever since . She loves the car and wont let me trade it in . I put smaller rims whith bigger off road tires on it and she never gets stuck . She also like the size its just right for her . I think jeep.made a big mistake they could have kept building it and made it a very basic cheep car. Oh it gets great gas mileage for a all wheel drive 25-26 around town even with the bigger tires. I do think the 6speed models are better reliability wise than the cvt. I do like the venza it wasn't very clear why the venza is a bad car just the wagon style? I like the look of it . I have heard of leaks around the drive shafts for the 4x4.
I believe the Patriot's CVT is the same JATCO model as the one in my cube, which made an honorable mention here. Lots of cube CVT death stories out there, but I've done like you and had it drained and refilled with fresh fluid every 30k, and so far, my 2010 cube has been reliable. It's got 130k on it. My wife drove it for the first four years until we found out baby number 2 was on his way, so I sold my little Ford Ranger and took over the cube. When we shopped for a new car for her, the Patriot was high on the list, but she ultimately decided another cube felt like home. Hers is a 2014 with nearly 60k miles now. Neither has given us any trouble.
@@themanthemyththebanger yes same cvt that's why I've been doing extra . I've seen people without extra effort and they seem to go about 130-140 . My Ford f150 is the same though my tech that I trust said you are crazy if you follow the long change intervals the factory recommend. I do all my trans ,rear front diff fluid every 30 k . Cars are to expensive to take a chance I want the best odds possible . Even my Prius and my wife's I changed everything . I do brakes I change fluid ,suck out the power steering everything.
@@680ecks Nissan recommended 60k drain cycles on the cube CVT under "normal service." Time has proven the folly of that recommendation. I've considered going the extra mile and installing an auxiliary transmission cooler on our cubes just for added peace of mind. People love to rag on CVTs nowadays, but when I was a kid in the '90s an awful lot of those same people had Chrysler, Ford, and Honda vehicles that were lucky to see 100k without a major transmission issue.
@@themanthemyththebanger I love cvts I hope they get them right I never liked clunky gear changes and you are 100 % on point they never held up (reg step trans). The new ones have chains inside instead of metal belts. Now that you jog my memory that was one of the first things I did add to the Patriot was the tow package because it had a trans cooler . I've never towed anything with it it was just cheeper to get the hole package . So I do have that on mine . Don't remember it being that hard to install it goes to the coolant line and trans line so the coolant keep it consistent temp.
In 2003 I had a 2001 Nissan Sentra S that I really liked. Had to bring it in for a repair, and while being repaired, went to Hertz who rented me a 2002 Aveo hatchback. I still, to this day, cannot believe the night-and-day difference in quality between these two cars. The Aveo felt like I was driving a glorified go-kart. It leaned, it shook, it felt as cheap as you would think. My Sentra felt like a Porsche by comparison.
I drove an F34 BMW 3 GT when I was looking to replace my previous 3 series. The GT actually has more passenger space due to a higher roofline and longer wheelbase (4 inches?). The other similar hatch was the 4 series Gran Coupe which had a lower roofline than the 3. In the end I played it safe and got a 5 series
My wife had a first gen versa back in 07 and i love it was a fun little car. I recently drove a 19 versa and omg how the versa has fallen. The new one is stupid crappy.
The first-gen Versa and the cube are sisters. Same basic platform, same powertrain (though a few Versas got a 1.6-liter and a traditional four-speed automatic, most had the same MR18DE and CVT or six-speed manual as the cube). You're right, they definitely cheapened the Versa in its second generation. It has less power, a cheaper-feeling interior, and worse factory electronics. I mean, sure, the NissanConnect touchscreen head unit improved a little (and I do mean a very little), but the sound quality went in the toilet. First-gen Versas and all cubes had Clarion-built sound components that were pretty decent for factory sound. Some cubes even got Rockford Fosgate sound, which was very good.
I agree with you on most, but the fiat, its a fun car and we have never had a problem with it., I do own a jlu too, I say the worst truck of the year is Titan. Had one of those for a year, now that thing had a ton of issues
@@heavyprogressive76 gas, not the engine wasn't the issue. It was overall quality. My grill and fromt bumper came loose and was crooked. The plastic between the windows fell off on one sided. Plastic around wheel wells started bowing and peeling off. That back sheet cargo starage started to cone apart. The GPS, radio was horrible and they put it in a way that it always had a glare. It was a 2018 pro4x. They are garbage. I got rid of it.
I'm borrowing my dad's aveo and it is the scariest thing I've ever driven, not to mention we just had freezing rain and snow. The thing has no traction, even on cleared roads
I guess i got a rare Fiat 500L because i haven't had a single issue with that car, and I've driven across the country in that thing multiple times so far. It might be because I perform my maintenance on time. Unlike the majority of people.
I had a '14 500L and the engine was no joke, especially compared to some other entries on this list. Really throaty exhaust and a peppy turbo with plenty of juice, I miss it. I did however have issues with interior and body reliability. My sunroof power shade fell off the track and had to be completely replaced. Both rear taillights have LED strips for nighttime driving that randomly failed, that part is not repairable so needs a whole new taillight assembly. All of which cost too much for repairs/parts and required going to increasingly elusive Fiat dealerships. Combined with the steep depreciation and polarizing styling, you have a car that honestly most people won't care to hang on to for long... myself included.
@@KillaninjaFC I can respect that, and yes it's not that appealing of a car. As for the value, my 2017 500L hasn't lost that much value. After owning it for only 2 years I am already in 5k of equity into that car with only maintenance being performed. Compared to something like a Nissan Altima that is crazy good.
I was interested in rhte Crosstour and the Venza was a really nice car for the Vietnamese community of the Midwest. I can't think of anyone else who bought them, but they were reasonably nice.
The Jeep Patriot is literally a station wagon with a tall roof-line and SUV/Jeep styling.... and that's it! Steering is ridiculously numb. And it feels bigger, and heavier (much more ponderous) than its size. How do you pull off a miserable trick like that?! Thankfully I didn't spend _my_ money on it.
I liked the idea of the Patriot. The execution was awful - the powertrain was crap. The size was convenient, but it was an awful piece of crap and on top of that, it was a Chrysler product.
Disagree with get the 3GT... it’s not as bad, it’s even better than the wagon if you are tall. I drove both a 340GT and an s5 and own a 3 serie wagon years ago. I am 6.1 and got plenty headroom in front and back seats in the GT (1st time in any 3 serie btw) while I have no headroom in the s5 driver seat and there was tons of leg space in the back. I could not seat properly in the back of the wagon and get less headroom in the front seat. With the inline 6 it was comfortable, powerful enough and get more ground clearance vs not being as sharp as the regular. Its main drawback is the price and the style but I did not like the previous regular 3 serie shape. the automatic rear spoiler « panamera like » even being useless is funny.
In America, that's practically a death sentence for a car. I like the 500L. I love my two Nissan cubes. Neither found a wide audience. But they both inspire loyalty and adoration from those who have owned them.
Here’s a bad car that started out the 2010’s: the 2010 Hyundai Accent Blue. No ac, no radio, no nothing. But it was less than $10,000. God, that generation is painfully slow 😂
A real bisexual petrol-head I don’t agree. Hyundai and Kia have really been changing their names recently. Kia with the stinger, telluride, seltos and their refreshes with the optima and more upcoming. And Hyundai with the palisade, sonata, venue and their new luxury brand genesis. They’re not what they used to be.
Smart electric is my perfect "purpose-built" car (to run errands and save my big cars from short trip wear and tear) - it's all you need and nothing you don't. It's fun as hell and because of all the bad press, cheap too - I paid $4800 for my cheery cherry.
If anybody is worried about the safety of a Smart car watch the UK objective motorshow called 5th gear it crash tested several and its safety cell proved remarkably rigid unlike the Fraud Mustings.
If this is 10 last years, worst I drove - 2009 Camry 4cyl. No power, no steering feel, no road handling. When I took it to a curvy road, I thought I am going to die if I don't drive slow because car was about to roll off the road. Now I understand why Camrys drove slow. They were unsafe!
I took a 5 mile ride in the city in a smart car my brother has. Felt like I would be killed any minute. I'll never ride in it again. Unless he comes to get me out of jail.
Having sold Nissan for a few months at that time, the 9995 Versa did exist, with cardboard door panels, electric nothing, abysmal manual transmission due to the clutch, we had to have one available (between 5 total showrooms/locations) but it was designed strictly to draw customers in to buy the least expensive new car available from a major manufacturer. Then we had to steer them upmarket. So I stopped selling cars. My ethics couldn't handle it. And I was the third in sales before my moral compass finally said enough.
Chevrolet Caprice PPV. A textbook example of "afterthought engineering". The interior was far too small, the interior plastics broke if you looked in their general direction, and the shifter was designed by Dr. Seuss. The one saving grace it had was it was pretty quick, but the fuel tank was small. and most departments went with the v-6. It was an overpriced , incapable machine that was ill-suited for the role it was marketed for, and a real PITA to upfit to boot.
Had a 500L as a rental over two weeks in Italy when it was new. It’s one of the worst road handling cars I’ve ever driven. The car itself in term of interiors and practicality was fine.
What you proved to me is that ford has a bigger advertising budget than anybody else. There’s been plenty of ford duds over the years.I bought a Chevy Aveo and it was cheap and not luxurious but it did exactly what I wanted it to do.
When my car got totaled in 2015, I was initially in a Ford Fiesta hatchback rental. Very cool car-it was zippy (even with an automatic), had a big touchscreen entertainment system, with lots of creature comforts and a decent ride. Once I settled with the insurance company, I had to do a long term rental until the replacement car I ordered came in. The cheapest option was a Toyota Yaris hatchback from Hertz. That car was awful! No sound deadening, a very basic radio, a buzzy engine, and a terrible ride, and it was slow compared to the Fiesta. Oh, and if you went to the grocery store on your way home, you could fit about two bags of groceries in the hatch. Anything else would have to ride in one of the seats!
Thanks for sharing this list. The only ones that I would somewhat be interested in are the Subaru Crosstrek and the New Compass or Renegade since they fit my budget and can somewhat go soft off roading and fit my want to be outdoor life style of hunting, fishing, camping, kayaking, etc.. with some good ground clearance and AWD/4x4. My Cruze cannot make it to some places. But I remember that video with the Crosstrek Hybrid and not making it to 60, I laughed quite a bit at that. I would stay away from the hybrid version as well. The problem even with the new Jeeps are reliability ratings and drastic depreciation that keeps me away. The CVT in the Crosstrek is something else that gives me pause. I have been a subscriber for at least half of the decade and remember some of those videos. Thanks for all you guys do and Happy New Year.
I actually liked the Accord Crosstour. Even considered buying one but I couldn't find one near me equipped the way I wanted. Then again I'm a guy who loves station wagons too.
*The pinnacle of lousy cars (going back a bit) was the Chevrolet Vega. Never to be outdone in short service life, engine (cast pot metal) and body (made of compressed rust).*
The Chevy Sonic was a huge improvement over the Aveo? Woah. Mind BLOWN! I've never hated driving any car as much as I hated the my auto parts store's fleet Chevy Sonics! Those things are like riding lawn mowers with cabs and Casio style instrument clusters!
The Smart was great. I owned one here in the USA for ten years. It had two problems. The first was Roger Penske, the person responsible for their importation and distribution, had the gear ratios changed from the European version that left a huge gap between first and second. A huge PITA. Second, the stupid skinny front wheels were just ugly and lost lateral grip too easily. I lowered the rear 1", replaced all the wheels with wider and larger rims with low profile tires, added a better flowing zorst and it would hit the computer limited 92 mph whenever I needed, which was often. I never had a problem finding parking spaces and it cut through commuter traffic like a hot knife through butter. The Smart does not deserve to be on a list like this. I owned multiple vehicles, from sports cars to PU trucks but I would take the Smart most days.
Actually surprised that you like the Fiat 500X. I drove one a couple of times and found the suspension absolutely horrible! So uncomfortable, it felt like it tried to kick out my kidneys when driving even over the smallest bumps in the road. I found the 500L only a bit les crappy.
NN, no way. First series: bad engine. Automatic gearbox: 🤢😱😵😭🤐 Last series, rather good, esp the EV, nice Renault. So that's why I own a Toyota iQ, 1.33 6sp MT full spec, discs front/rear, even fun on the Autobahn😁
@@j.r.arnolli7494 I agree that Toyota is better, but second generation Smart is a solid small car with a reliable 1.0 MHD Mitsubishi engine. First generation had small turbo engines which weren't great, but they were still alright. Mine has 110K miles on the clock (175K km)! Btw that 0.9 engine is Mercedes, not Renault... I think. Current generation is not good as the second was.
Keep in mind the Smart Fortwo’s 0.7L 3cyl turbo engine is mounted under the boot floor (yes, boot because I’m Aussie), and heat would actually transfer through it. So if you put cold products like ice cream in the boot, it is very likely to melt before you get home. There’s only one word for it: Stupid
It's a safety issue! A vehicle should be able to reach the speed limit in less than a quarter mile in order to not pose a huge safety risk, not to mention its illegal to enter the highway at below the speed limit.
My unpopular opinion: The Patriot was styled close enough to an XJ that if Jeep called it the Cherokee instead and beefed up the engineering / reliability just a liiiiitle bit, it would've done a lot better.
I recently had the pleasure of driving a Nissan Versa SV courtesy of Enterprise. Did not love the car, but it was passable on the metric of getting from point A to B. I hated the steering and handling though.
We got an 09 venza. Its pretty cool because people don't really know what it is. Looks more premium and newer than it is, especially with the 20 inch 5 spokes. Currently has about 100,000 thousand miles but hope it gets more. See used ones with 220,00+ miles all the time online. Will say the interior fit and finish isn't there. The car was an 09 IHHS safety pick though.
2009-2019 Dodge Journey, it’s looked practically the same since 2009. The ones with the 2.4 4-Cylinder are mated to a 4-Speed Auto. Those are the ones to avoid.
Cheyne Miles they probably didn’t think about the Acura but the mirage isn’t that bad for the price that’s why it’s better then the Chevy Aveo and crap like that mainly bc of the price
@@ChickenC0re In US yeah, there's not many better choices at that price range. Europe however... Yeah, you don't exactly see many of those on the roads despite cheap superminis being the most popular cars around here.

I really like the Venza. It's more than enough car for most families. It can even tow a small camper or boat with the V6 (but the V6 gets lousy gas mileage).
The diesel smart cars made sense because they got incredible mileage. You have to remember that these guys are spoiled, driving all different cars not every car can be super powerful. Fuel mileage has to be taken in to consideration as well.
To anybody wondering, there is actually a better version of the smart car out there. That’s also because it isn’t a smart car. The Scion IQ or Toyota IQ because not made in the U.S. anymore had better interior, quality, and a Toyota CVT. There was also more cargo storage and I shit you not back seats! Obviously not Toyota’s best creation but it was the biggest flex to the Smart for-two!
No, Ive never owned one. I would be interested in buying one in certain circumstances. I was just saying I prefer manual windows. My current car and my last car had manual windows.
Correct. I'd prefer electric windows if they didn't go bad on almost every vehicle I've owned at some point in it's life. They WILL Fail if you live in areas that get below zero. The motors get weak to the point where it can stop working altogether. At that point you wish you had the option to manually open it. 🙄
If you look at the history of Fiat in the US from the sixties and seventies you’ll see that apparently Fiat (FCA) didn’t learn anything from that historical debacle. Undersized, underpowered and unreliable.

You dont need GT for a bmw(and driver) to be a genuine turd
I think you guys are missing the boat on the BMW 3 series GT. Because it's based on the long wheelbase version of the 3 series otherwise only available in China, it has a ton more rear legroom than a standard 3 sedan or wagon with barely less cargo capacity than the 3 wagon. Plus the long wheelbase gives it way better proportions than the 5 Series or 6 Series hatchbacks.

I will admit the styling is weird and when I first saw them I was turned off.

@@680ecks Nissan recommended 60k drain cycles on the cube CVT under "normal service." Time has proven the folly of that recommendation. I've considered going the extra mile and installing an auxiliary transmission cooler on our cubes just for added peace of mind.

I think the Venza’s main issue is that it went head to head with the Outback which is better for that kind of car. Otherwise tough list to argue.

I bought one as a throw-away car for $5k. I put 50k miles on it and sold it to a recent immigrant 4 years later for.... $5k.
I like the styling of the Venza for what it is, a tall wagon. Yes, I wonder constantly what designers were thinking.
I was interested in rhte Crosstour and the Venza was a really nice car for the Vietnamese community of the Midwest. I can't think of anyone else who bought them, but they were reasonably nice.
Pregnant ant, love it!!!!!
Thr best thing about all Kia Souls or Toyota Rukus is that if you are driving it you don't have to look at it.
At least the 500L was quirky, distinctive and interesting.
In America, that's practically a death sentence for a car. I like the 500L. I love my two Nissan cubes. Neither found a wide audience. But they both inspire loyalty and adoration from those who have owned them.

Cool video. I wish this was more related to reliability, quality, and ride. Ugliness I can deal with.
The worst thing about the Venza was the price.
Gas mileage is bad too.

The Patriot was styled close enough to an XJ that if Jeep called it the Cherokee instead and beefed up the engineering / reliability just a liiiiitle bit, it would've done a lot better.
Aveo was the last car sold in my country without abs. So when they changed the law and make it mandatory for new cars it was basically for aveo!:)
