    This video was presented very accurately and better than most, in my opinion. Also, it gives more of a practical understanding of what Crissy explained about the playlist, which I was so unmindful of. I miss taking the on-line courses with Berklee. I wish I had Crissy as my instructor. Great job on the vocals, Satarra!

    "This is the central scrutinizer"... I believe Zappa must have making deliberate use of the proximity effect for this specific character; I can't imagine a potential use of the P's in a musical setting but it's kinda fun to think about it.
    A great video - very clear and well paced. Think I learned as much about making a strong presentation as I did about recording vocals watching this.
    There's a lot of information yet it's paced in a way that its easy to digest. Also rather than static, it incites a strange sense of adventure inviting the viewer to explore and tinker without loosing its sense of direction. Finally despite the lack of humor, the combination of the songs character and presenters body language keeps the tone friendly and casual.
    Again, tons to learn here ...

  • @petermorley3910
    @petermorley3910 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great stuff here! You may be doing this with the vocalist (can't tell) but I find it's much easier to sing more in tune if I'm NOT hearing the original track I'm doubling in the headphones. I always mute the original track when doubling. The key is to rehearse every nuance of a part that is to be layered beforehand. Hearing myself on an earlier take tends to throw me off pitch a bit for the current take. OR you can take off the left or right side of the headphones so you can better hear current intonation as you match performance subtleties with the earlier take in the other ear. That's me anyway. Other (better) vocalists may not have this issue.

  • @ianmartin2924

    It's distorted because you didn't gain stage the closer mic position. The proximity effect is often desirable. Especially for a delicate or intimate performance.
    3 inches away isn't the "right "way. The right way is the method that sounds the best in the given context.

    Viewing this in April 2020! Covid-19, (the voice killer) days! Anyhow, I had just last week downloaded Pro Tools First, free software that came with a new Mackie ProFX6V3 mixer that I bought. I hated it. Went back to Audacity that I was using (mostly for fun karaoke recording). Then I discovered CAKEWALK BY BANDLAB, an awesome FREE DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) which I run on my Windows 10 laptop. Watched several YT videos, and then got going. Superb for home use, and could be used in a studio too! Am not going back to Audacity again!! I just use a Shure SM58 dynamic microphone with a foam cover which pretty much handles the pops well. For just this fun stuff I do not feel like spending $400 and up on a condenser mic; besides, I already have an AKG condenser mic which I bought 15 years ago for $150, an AKG C1000S; it now sells for $199 and is pretty good, really. But a noisy household is no place for a condenser mic! And oh, maybe a good mask will work as a pop filter? Likely not; just kidding! :)
