Beaching our Wharram Catamaran! [Go Sea Camping - Ep01]

  • Our Wharram Catamaran,Tiare, is beached for a few maintenance jobs that can only be done out of the water.
    I learn the meaning of patience and we also make her ready for a lunchtime cooking group.
    At the end of the week I start getting ready for putting out a "third leg" on our mooring.
    -----------------------------------
    Music by Sam Springett: - “Feel You Smile”
    -----------------------------------
    About Tiare.
    Tiare is not your usual production catamaran, she is a Wharram Islander 55 and has been our home for seven years. The last two years have seen us "settle" in the inland sea of Japan while our youngest son finishes high school.
    Being in one place has given us the opportunity to alter Tiare to fit in to what we would like in a world cruising sailboat. And to start creating a source of income that can travel with us.
    Wharram catamarans offer an affordable alternative for everyday people to cast off and cruise the worlds oceans.
    Where simplicity means the freedom to stay out for longer.
    We hope these videos will inspire others to look at what it means and takes to live aboard while sailing the world and that Japan must be one of the greatest cruising destinations on the planet.

    drop the anchor on the way in. Thats how it was done with LST's to pullthemselves off the beach after a landing

    enjoyed the episode; glad that it is not over produced and taking up a bunch of your time; also enjoyed the honest look at maintenance and upkeep... water always wins and salt water is king... as eight crows media states : " great video, keep them coming"

    Love your work, you are the " Wise man's haul out" indeed, as nowadays, costs of a cat. haul out is very high, of a half year's provisions costs on the sea is saved. As my V.L.E.S shirt says: " Do the best you can, with what you have"

    @Sea Japan >>> I was wondering if any Wharrams had the equivalent of _an engine in each hull._ Yours is the first I have seen that does...👍👍

    • @SeaJapan
      @SeaJapan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Majority of cats have engines inside each hull. Wharrams generally don’t. Instead they are mounted on, or in, the platform between the hulls. Pros and cons for each way.

    Your forming a seal with the bottle. This will take forever, can get messy also. You have the right idea with the small hose but its probably getting blocked. Try getting a larger diameter hose and put it into the engine through the bottle before you start putting in oil. Cutting that small line into 2 or 3 might work better. Putting which ever line first before oil will give you better chances at the line not getting blocked so air can escape through them.

      Elysium Tech Thanks for the advice. Will be overhauling the drives around Xmas and certainly looking at all options to speed up the process.

  • @stayfree6115
    @stayfree6115 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Heat the oil first. Also you can use the oil bottle and put a 1/4 inch hose onto a hole in the cap. Then just put it the fill hole and squeeze the container .
    Old trick

      Hi Dave, actually has been a while!
      Hope to have another video up in next ten days, second part of the rudder and woodworm repairs.
      Then a bit more regular after that.
      Last four weeks have been busy scraping antifoul and paint. And honestly couldn’t think of a morning boring series of videos than scraping paint. :)
      But all that nearly done.
      Thanks for the time to comment. Appreciated.

    Hello. Liked the video, love hands on real world people and boats :) Not to get a head of my self, but I am starting up building my own 42 foot catamaran after Christmas, hopefully if the plans go together.
    Anyways, this seems to be a home made catamaran? so maybe you will have some good advice on what to have and not to have on it. So I will be fallowing along and i might ask a few questions along the way, hope that is ok.
    Keep the good work up and keep them vids coming.

      Tiare was built professionally in Indonesia. Not sure about the Asian Lug Rig. Am a big fan of Wharram’s wing gaff rig. Being able to drop or put in a reef without heading up into the wind is s big deal.
      New videos starting soon. Thanks for watching.

    Are you using tubing to encourage the oil flow?? That way the air would transfer thru the tube like a straw and let the oil flow quicker. Just a thought. And can you turn up the volume mate, can hardly hear you. Great scenery and video...

    • @SeaJapan
      @SeaJapan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Shane thank for the comment. Part of the issue was the narrowness and the path of the filler tube. All sorted now as have increased the filler diameter and straightened out the oil filler tube. Sound hopefully my more recent videos are better, steep learning curve on sound and video editing.

    Nice video - I must say I expected another typical billionaire media mogul complaining about their situation whilst doing something stupid like beaching their multimillion dollar yacht. What I found was a very practical guy who is doing productive stuff to maintain his business and lifestyle - kudos. After reviewing, I am surprised that the backstop anchor was not dropped as you were heading to your beaching location. Other than that - good stuff.

    • @SeaJapan
      @SeaJapan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Frank, thanks for taking the time to comment. To be honest I think I would like to be a billionaire media mogul complaining about beaching my multimillion dollar yacht :)
      The first couple of times I beached there I did put out a stern anchor and ease in. But I know the beach and currents and it is easier to place the stern anchor exactly where I need it after I have beached.
      Certainly wouldn’t advise to do on unfamiliar beach.

    • @Frank-ue6eg
      @Frank-ue6eg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, and good point, I hadn't thought of that - you certainly know your stuff. I'd trust you to navigate/pilot/sail - your service appears to be really great and your clients/customers clearly enjoy themselves - its a great lifestyle to be able to live and work what you enjoy while providing a great service to people.
