    30 years ago I built a tiki 31, unfortunately it turned out to be too expensive for the costs in the marina, (3* more expensive here in 🇭🇷) and a large area for removing grass and shells every two weeks... My colleague recommended to burn all the wooden parts with a torch before epoxy resin. They have never rotted and have had beautiful patterns for years, I let the boat to an acquaintance for $1, and today it sails without rotting with minimal maintenance. Your boat seems much more usable to me than the tiki 31 and I can still only dream of such a beautiful vessel.
    🙏👍🇭🇷

      Thanks for your comment! Tiki 38 is a good size! Very usable for sure, at least in warm climate! Burn the plywood first, never heard of it but must be a very good idea! For us, three years in the tropics with no maintenance was very bad for BareBare. Covid time harmed her a lot.

    Sad to hear about your 3 years away from your boat. We experienced the same thing. We bought a Kelly Peterson 46 in Fiji in 2019, sailed her to New Zealand in November 2019, and we never saw the boat again. We sold her 2.5 years after the beginning of COVID. How many plans it changed for all of us. Good luck selling your boat. Great video.

    I have heard of a cat, now forty years old, build of WBP softwood ply, still going strong.
    The most important thing is to make sure any timber is fully coated before even bring to the boat assembly. Ideally three coats of epoxy.
    In hot humid climates, once wood gets wet, marine grade or not, it will rot.
    And then the issue is drying it out, the coating seals in the moisture as much as keeps it out.
    The blessing is that repairs are not difficult.
    You do need a moisture meter to ensure any timber adjoining a repair is properly dry.
    Best of luck passing her on.

    • @barebaretoborabora
      @barebaretoborabora  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Mark and thank you for your comment! We used WBP, not the very best marine type, but either we did not cover well enough, or the sun started eating first the paint and then the epoxy... And during three years the sun we usually love... managed to do a lot of damage! We know the repairing is not difficult, but living in Norway it is not so easy to manage to get it done ! Moisture meter is a very good idea. And, again Thanks for your comment. Somehow glad to hear that even the very best plywood would rot, eventually!

The Portuguese government wanted to take people out. Hello Mark! I hope a Viking funeral is not the solution. Plywood and epoxy and time to do the work and she can be fixed!

    Why not take it back by container and work on it in Norway yourselves ?

      Hi Jimmy! That is a good idea and we might consider it, but somehow I feel like her home is in French Polynsia. But for sure, she can be taken apart and shipped anywhere in the world!
