    YES. Been following grease pencil's development for years to see this. I know this is niche stuff, but you're literally the first person I've seen talking about the issues & solutions involved in grease pencil ALL the way around a 3d mesh. Your work is inspiring, your message concise, and your delivery full of charm. THANK YOU! I am beyond excited to see more.

      @@SophieJantak Nothing is more natural than praising th deserving. Yes, I look forward to seeing what else you put out, and I'm sure detailed tutorials by you would be appreciated by both the Blender community and by a more general audience of artists who may not know Blender may be a great tool for them. I've seen some amazing conceptual artists who start off creating a scene and rendering in Blender and then moving on to Photoshop or Krita to create a more painterly look. Oh, and your 3D and line art creations are amazing. I've never seen anything like it. Well, that's enough from me. Carry on! :)

      @@kentjensen4504 Thank you! (sorry for the late reply, I've realized youtube doesn't notify me about comment replies!) I've definitely seen some people do amazing things mixing Blender with painting programs, which is awesome, but something that excites me about Blender is the idea of keeping the whole workflow within the program - that's just a different angle I'm trying to take, with my grease pencil brushes and so forth. I'm excited to make tutorials about getting beautiful painterly looks all within Blender :)

      @@SophieJantak Yes, I definetely see the appeal of keeping it all within Blender, to become one with the program, so to speak, making it your own amazing super brush. I'm currently working on a project with characters that have Grease Pencil stuff as part of their design along side the model and texture and all that.
    My solution for this issue was to just hit numpad 5 on the keyboard to switch the camera from perspective to orthographic. Now the distance from the surface of the model would stay the same no matter how much I'd zoom in or out.

    It's probably been said somewhere else in the comments but here's
    another possible solution: instead of a solidify you could use a
    displacement modifier with a negative value. It works exactly the
    opposite way (it pushes the faces inside along their normal) and of
    course you'd have it disabled during the drawing phase and enabled in
    rendering. The possible benefit (?) could be a slightly more responsive
    experience (not having to compute the modifier at draw time) and the
    ability to add the modifier a the end of the process to a bunch of
    meshes (in theory you could also achieve the same result entirely in the material without the modifier if you render in cycles)
    oh and just found this channel but I love the things I've seen so far

      @@SophieJantak Nice!

    • @Shining4Dawn
      @Shining4Dawn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      That would work, but it's a destructive method. If you wanted to go back and make changes to your Grease Pencil art after shrinking the model you'd either have to scale it back up to exactly the right size or you'd have to keep two copies of the mesh - one for GP work and one for display.
      The modifier stack, on the other hand, is non-destructive.

    • @allofronmastiga2025
      @allofronmastiga2025 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alternatively the "Displace" modifier without a texture does essentially the same as Alt + S but non-destructively, it uniformly displaces vertices based on their normal. Solidify is fine in many cases but it can often destroy uniformity and even glitch out if you overdo it, since your original geometry is essentially duplicated and merged with itself, sharp corners and creases can overlap and mess you up.

    This is really great content. You could do a whole series for traditional media artists and 2d digital artists about how Blender can open up a new world for them! A couple of decades ago I had a project taking the paintings by an artist friend and wrapping them around shapes to create painted environments (in quicktime VR) so you could go inside and travel through them. Sadly the tech was not up to the task, but we still talk about that project. Maybe it is time to try again...

    • @SophieJantak
      @SophieJantak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I guess I think that's what my channel is, because I can only approach Blender from the POV of a 2d digital/traditional artist, so what I'd really like is for my videos to feel like a way for others like me to jump into Blender. And hopefully the tutorial series I eventually do will also serve that purpose :) What you're describing sounds really cool, I'm not sure I fully understand (did you do this digitally or traditionally?) but if you have the time you should definitely try again with today's technology, I think that sounds awesome

    You don't need to add a holdout material. What you can do, is in the filter category for the outliner, where the "Restriction Toggles" are at, you'll see a white square with an empty circle inside of it.
    Turn that on, create a new collection, put the sphere inside of it alone, and then enable the Holdout Toggle so you don't need to add a material. This allows you to keep whatever material is on the sphere now.

    Hey Sophie! How do you set up your turntables? Do you turn the camera around the object ( in which case how do you handle the background image?) or do you rotate the object itself? I’m finding the mesh with the holdout material isn’t rotating with the GP object, so I’m seeing through both sides. Any thoughts?

    Woooww!! Very cool and helpful! Love it!❤. I really want to create a 2D cartoon look on a 3d character. How can I get smooth lines and lines that end thinner at the end of the stroke. Do you have tips?? Thanks for the video!❤

    If you disable the solidfy viewport toggle, does it still draw with proper offset? Lovely voice btw :)

    Your channel is fun to watch :) I'm trying to learn about Grease pencil for drawing comics, I have never been good with 2D art so that might make it possible for me. Lots to learn still.

    Great tutorial!!! By the way, I am good at 3d but really bad at animation part. I want create a block version of my object/human/etc and draw on them for the expression. Does this grease pencil stick to the mesh? or I need to do some funky parenting etc and does it work if I put a bone to it? and sorry for asking, if I want to animate the drawing (expression of a face from normal to smiling), how do I do that?

    At 01:39, I just want to say you're awesome. I was trying to learn grease pencil today, and I was getting really frustrated because I couldn't get the curves to lie against the surface I thought I was drawing on. I totally missed that little slider, and the tutorial I was following didn't mention it either. I looked everywhere in blender settings except the right spot. Thanks!

    idk if this is helpful or works on the version of blender used in the video but a short 1 minute video said that issue can be remedied by hitting 5 on the number pad.

    I'm towards the end of my current project
    Almost done with the modeling
    I did a very small silly project making peter griffin and that's when I found out that the offset was weird and I kinda started to panic because I want my big project to have lines with the grease pencil
    Thank you for making this video, I can stop panicking now lol
    A lot of good tips in the comments too

    An issue I’ve been having is when I try and fill the line art, if it’s still set to surface it will seemingly just fill it in a random place in space instead of in my lines. I’ve found a workaround for it but I’m not super happy with it and would rather my fills just work on surfaces. Does anyone have any idea why it’s doing this and a potential fix?
    I’ve tried making the offset a little higher as I was thinking maybe the fill was getting lost in the mesh, but nope, it’ll just appear super far off into the distance.

    I love grease Pencil but you can tell that its not exactly made by people who draw a lot. It just takes a little bit of getting used to and a few workarounds. I hope the tools become more intuitive in a few years!

    Ive been looking all over for a solution to looking at the strokes in the back with 3d grease pencil drawings. But i did everything she said, used the holdout material, kept the mesh, i can still see all the strokes in the back... has anything changed?

    I forget the name of this setting because I haven't used blender in a month, but in sculpting mode there is a setting you can disable that turns of the zoom brush stroke linking. I haven't used Grease pencil much, but I'm sure if there is a setting to turn that off in sculpting then there has to be one for Grease Pencil as well right?

    Nice workaround, tho I think this should be considered and reported as bug, there's no reason for the offset to change with the zoom of the 3d view

  • @icedriver2207

    Really like your tutorials. I'm curious do you create a blank start up file with a hold out material in it. If not you should do this and then add a fake user so it will be saved in the startup file even if it isn't attached to anything.
