My dad worked at Scammells in the 60s as a fitter welder and in the days when British Industry had regular open days, i was lucky enough to look round Scammells before the
factory closed in the 80s, they were building a lot of heavy duty military trucks then.
Other great open days in industry around the Watford area included Rolls Royce [Leavesden] and London Transport maintenence depot [Aldenham works].
I remember as a child seeing the big Scammells with swan neck trailers waiting in the layby at the Busy Bee cafe , A41 Watford bypass. Very nostalgic video.

I remember going to Carters Steam Fair in the early 80's, and spending more time looking at the tractors and showmens homes than at the attractions!

After my first driving job at Smithfield Meat Market driving Austin J2/4 vans, I got a job driving a tiny Scammel artic for a firm called C.F. Anderson, based at the Angel Islington., It was based on a 1 ton van chassis, a Triumph 2000 diesel engine with a Scammel coupling and a 16' trailer. It was a nightmare to reverse. 40' trailers were a doddle after that. My next vehicle for Andersons was a TK Bedford, and at 19, I felt King of the road. That was my first 'real' lorry.

Another top quality video thanks Christopher 🎥I love the Scammell trucks and used to see Pickfords bringing out Paper Machines out of Beloit Walmsley on Compton way in Bolton they also had a depot towards Swindon. With my dad working for BRS in Bolton the yard always had plenty of Crusader’s and they looked epic!. Something about Scammells that says Tough ,ready for anything, and British.

hi ,great video, pity Scammell started to use the leyland/motor panels cab in later years, should have stuck with the Michollti cheese grater cab,but i expect BL was leaning on them as they did to us at AEC ltd

Manbre & Garton tanker at 4:40, Winslow rd, Fulham. When i left school in 1969, my first job was a trailer boy at Manbre Sugars. The tanker would have come down from Liverpool.

1.14 NOT Scammells. Early WW2 Albion tank transporters that proved too light for the job.
